      My axi's gills tend to shrink from time to time, and they've never developed like the axolotls I see online (with long, feathery gills). I was wondering if there's a way to fix that? He's a little less than 5 inches long at the moment, he eats well, and his tank is always clean. I don't know what's wrong...

      @@GirlTalksFish hey, my axi is getting white fluff on his finger tips, and a buddy told me to tub him for a couple days with some methylene blue (changing his water every day of course). I've been doing this for 3 days now but nothing... the white stiff is still there. It's not a lot (it's not like on his body, just the tip of his legs) but I dont qant him to die. I'm desperate for him to get better bc i think my other axi died of this stuff a long while back. Btw he eats just fine.

    I’m an experienced Axolotl owner but I still like to watch these videos! This was one of the only videos I could find who actually gives pretty much all of the information you will need to own one! Very good job! :) Well I tried to keep a guppy colony with my axolotls, I have 4 in a 90 gallon tank, all 4 adults, I added 150 guppies which I bought from a friend in the tank, my plan was to keep the guppies there for the axolotls to take AND keep the colony going but to my surprise I woke up the very next day and only 9 guppies were left! 😂 These monsters never stop eating haha, anyway, loved your video! axolotls are awesome! Greetings from Belgium! :)

    When I was 14 I got my first Axolotl, and he was, I would guess given his size at the time, around 3 years old. He died just this year, I am 28 now, so that was 14 years ago. That would have made him 17 years old. He grew quite emaciated and frail, and at the end would no longer take any food. But I have kept many many axolotls and have never seen one get as old as he did, he was quite ancient. My other axolotl lived to be 12, and I currently have one that is 5, and he is quite young looking. I think they can get to be pretty old if kept right and fed properly.

    I'm still watching, but I'm an *experienced* axolotl owner. This is one of the only videos that mentioned how messy it is when they poop. I have my baby (not really a baby anymore) in a 10 gal cause he got stressed in a 20 gal. IF YOU SEE POOP CLEAN IT lol. poop that's flung is not fun the clean up. Also fun to note, sometimes barebottom can stress them out:). My axolotl went from eating bloodwork. Then he started refusing when I offered up size. He prefers pellets and still eats 2 times a day haha. I'm glad you said there could be no fish because I've seen a lot of guppies and tanks together. Also, Idk if I missed it..., but did you mention water testing?

      Another experienced axolotl owner here! 20 gallons is the accepted minimum for any adult axolotl and then ten more for each additional axolotl. It's possible yours was stressed not because of the additional space but maybe lack of cover? If they don't have hides or plants that can stress them pretty badly. Bare bottom should also not stress them but fine sand isn't much more difficult to clean and it looks beautiful.

    Here in Mexico there is a ton of information regarding care and husbandry, last week there was a freshwater fish event in Queretaro with ton of legal specimens selling for dirt cheap, got out of there with a couple of golden Ambystoma mexicanum and an Ambystoma dumerilii (the patzcuaro axolotl).

    Great video! I am thinking about getting one and was looking for info about how to care for them. Btw Axolotl is a Nahuatl word and it's phonetic pronunciation to English would be more like Asholotl - X is a very soft should like "sh", both "o"s are pronounced like in the word Ocean, the "TL" ending is a fast sound generated at the back of your mouth by keeping the tip of your tongue behind your incisors meanwhile moving the back of your tongue rapidly downwards to produce the sound "L". Thanks again for the video I hope your axolotls are doing great! ;)

    I use quatz sand, and never had any problems with it, they can eat it, and It just comes out the other end. Fine sand can get stuck in the stomach. Axolotls do like to have grip on there soft feet. DO NOT bring them out of the water or they will die. If you're Axolotl goes straight then they are stressed, put a lot of hiding holes, turn light of and put something over the tank, helps them when they are stressed. Put a book right near the tank and they will read it.
    Check out what I said and then make your own decisions. And remember each to there own.

      Joohoneypoo For 80-90 liters, I'd personally just stick with one axolotl. However, two male axolotls should be fine together. Very occasionally, you'll get an axolotl who just doesn't play well with others, but that can happen with either gender. Good luck!

    Hi, sorry I know this video is long time ago, (and sorry if I have any spelling or grammar mistake) but I search about axolotl in both English and Chinese. In China they saying axolotl don't like swim around, and a healthy axolotl will stay at the bottom and doesn't move. But in video I saw axolotls swim around and looks very well and healthy. So I want to know which imformation is true?

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! Both are true. Juvenile axolotls tend to swim around more, and adult axolotls tend to be pretty sedentary and will stay still at the bottom of the tank. Also, axolotls do have different personalities, and some axolotls like to be more active than others. Hope that helps!

    Can you add any bottom feeders to eat the poop up? Or a bottom filtration?

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Good question. There aren't really any aquarium animals that eat poop directly (besides unsightly detritus worms), and if there were, the axolotl would probably try to eat it. 😅 There are undergravel filters that filter from the bottom, but I think they require the use of gravel (not sand) as the substrate, which the axolotl may accidentally consume and have problems passing. Good brainstorming though!

      Corydoras, even fancy goldfish life ranchu or ryukin may be suitable, but other varieties like pompom or bubble eyes may not for obvious reasons, the axolotl could try to suck their protuberances and damage the fish. Though adult axolotls may only live with common and wakin tipe of goldfish.

    • @TheGrmany69

      Loaches and pimelodus may be suitable as well, Raphael catfish too. There are some catfish in the SA andes known as "babositos" in Venezuela that are loach look-alike plecos, they may be de most suitable peer for axolotls because they live in mountain and feed on garbage and decaying matter.
