    Why not visit the shop while I do a repair on a tool slide for a Powermatic model 90 wood lathe. Long time viewers will remember a previous job I did on this same machine making a bushing to allow the owner to use tools with 1" shanks instead of the 1 1/8 shanks that came with the machine.

    Hey you did better than I could of.. I'm surprised you just made a whole new part out of some 4140 stock and thread the bolt, drill for the shaft, been done with it. You put more machining into the bushing.

    • @jtkilroy
      @jtkilroy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I had had any 4140 on hand I would have. All I have for similar material was either two small a diameter or flat stock.

    Great repair-refurbish job Jim. Don't sweat the TIG your do well. Remember TIG is such a high strength process..."a little dab will do ya" [Brylcreem welding lol!] My TIG set up has no control of amperage while welding, only on/off, but from experience I can preset the amperage for the job. You learn by doing and your doing well!

    Nice repair to the wood lathe "Banjo" for a older model Powermatic lathe. The older ones were painted green and the newer ones like I have are Powermatic Gold in color. I am a woodworker who has enjoyed your channel for years and liked meeting you at the Bar Z Bash this past summer and look forward to going this year despite that I have a bit further way to travel. As always love the content!

    Great Repair
    I definitely understand your tig welding frustrations. Concepts and principles check. Putting all together at one time not so much.
    And then you just have the days of when, The more I machine the better welder I become. But the more I weld the better at grinding I get. LOL
    Stay safe out there.
    Looking forward to the windy hill foundry video.

    Nice. Auto darkening weld hood needs to show up under the x-mas tree. Helps a lot. Might have actually been easier to gas weld if your TIG machine doesn't have a foot treadle. Had to do those repairs on my Powermatic 25.

    Just curious James, why not a light press for the new bushing, rest of the repair looked good.

    • @jtkilroy
      @jtkilroy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to be able to get this thing apart and there isn't any easy way to press it back out if you pressed it in. I am afraid that would have resulted in the use of things like vise grips and channel locks, screw drivers and pry bars.

    I am wondering why you didn’t just make a new one. It think it would have been less time consuming and a prettier result.

    • @jtkilroy
      @jtkilroy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was actually faster to repair as I didn't have any proper material on hand. I have lots of 12L14 of the correct size but I hardly consider that proper for this application.
