Finally a true beginner's video. I saw so many people label their videos "beginner" and never showed what the person was doing underneath. If a person is totally new to the craft you've no idea what's going on underneath the cloth. Thank you for making this video everything is so clearly explained.
I am trying rug hooking for the first time. Your warm, enthusiastic, open and informative tone is exactly what I need to get me started - thank you. What a lovely video.
I have watched dozens and dozens of rug hooking and rug punching videos but this one..THIS ONE !! shows what your doing with the hand underneath the fabric....Thank you so much..I feel I can do that and can't wait to get started!
Hello. I do latch hook rugs and still I watch your videos because I love your personality and your teachings about fabrics and tools. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

Hi Deana, I really appreciate your teaching style (i.e., a little history of rug hooking, detailed information and instructions). A+ = Positive encouragement.😇
I’ve watched many ‘how to’ hook rugs and this one is the first I’ve totally understood. Thank you and your teaching tool. I’m waiting for my supplies to arrive and I can begin my adventure of rug hooking. Thank you, thank you…💕
Super! Sometimes someone says the right thing at the right time and it all clicks. You never know why this time and not last time, but when it clicks it's a GOOD feeling. Let me know it you need help with anything. I'm in our facebook group at Rug Hooking & Punch Needle Club all the time, and you can find me at ribboncandyhooking@gmail.com Everything's aggravating at the start but hang in and give a shout out if you feel stuck. Remember it's folk art and if it's perfect it's going to look like it came from Homegoods! xxxx
Deana you are the best for helping us beginners🥰 I so much appreciate you taking the time to do this for us. I look at my holder that I purchased from you a little while ago, and it keeps whispering to me....please just give it a try...... so now this video is really helping me understand what’s going on underneath the work station, and makes me understand it so much better, so thanks so much for your time and knowledge💖
Thanks for the information in how to start rug hooking I have been thinking about trying the craft its nice knowing that I can use cut strips or ball of yarn
Thank you so much for such a wonderful video! I was struggling with my first project and watching this really helped. My main issue was not holding my hook properly and trying to pull the wool strip straight up, and leaving just a nub on top instead of a nice wide loop. You really helped! Thank you!
I'm so glad! Those technical problems always happen to everyone. It's good to keep going and figure things out as you go - I'm glad if my videos are helping and be in touch anytime if you're struggling! xx
I just bought some used stockings today. I thought they were so cool looking. I'd never seen anything like it. I've been searching Google to see what it is. It's hand hooked! I never knew! I'm glad I ended up here. I kab l learned so much. Thank you
Yes it would. The frame used in the video is a metal mesh to show the loops and techniques. You would use this technique on a woven fabric like linen, monk's cloth or burlap. Sorry I don't speak Portugese so I use Google to translate the reply here: Sim, seria. A moldura utilizada no vídeo é uma malha metálica para mostrar os loops e técnicas. Você usaria essa técnica em um tecido como linho, pano de monge ou serapilheira. Desculpe, eu não falo português, então uso o Google para traduzir a resposta aqui:
Thank You for the informative videos,Deana, I enjoy them very much and are quite helpful. Would you tell me where I can buy the netting you are using and is it nylon, wire or some other type of netting? Thank you.
Have watched many of your videos, love the one on finishing. If actually using the piece as a rug do you do anything to stop slippage? Thanks for your good work.
HI Deanna, Love your video, very informative, I was searching for a Primitive Course Hook needle and the ones I found are about 40 dollars, can you tell me where you found yours ? Thank-you
Thanks! Yeah they can be crazy amounts. I sell an excellent Joan Moshimer hook you can use for anything for $12...www.ribboncandyhooking.com/products/primitive-rug-hook
Hi, I just want to know what do you do with the ends after keep them from coming out. I’m a crocheted but do a lot of different things in my time. I recently had surgery on my hand for carpal tunnel and can’t crochet. Was wanting to try this for a little while. Thanks for the showing us beginners. Vicki
Hi, that’s a good information about rug hooking but I’m still lost which needle type, size, which wool to start for a wool rug and also I would like to try T shirt rugs. Pls help me there
Hey love, thank you for so detailed information 🙂. I'm a crocheter and I feel your hooks are like crochet hooks. aren't they? Can I use them in these projects?
Hello. I'm enjoying your videos. About to try rug hooking and would like to know where I can purchase the rug hook that you are describing. As you said, they have all types of measurements and it's confusing to say the least. Where could I get the type you have?? Thanks.
Yes those were typically woven. I have lots of episodes on the many textile making techniques but we haven't gotten into tapestries and weaving yet. Soon!
Hello, I'm a beginner at rug hooking and I have a problem. Whenever I set a new loop, the previous loop becomes small again. Although I slightly pull the new loop in the direction of the existing loops. What am I doing wrong ? Greetings Susi from Germany
It seems like it would work but it doesn't work well. I rug hook has a sharper head to poke through and the crook is deeper to grab better. If you have someone in your life who could grind your hook a little (that didn't sound great did it) then you could adapt one. But typically they don't work well and it's frustrating
Try a crochet hook. Usually they don't work because the tip isn't sharp enough and the crook isn't deep enough - but once in a while a crochet WILL work - so try all the ones you have! I will cross my fingers! xx

Hi Deana! I love the round rug you hold up with the flower design (at 2:02). Is that a pattern available for purchase? I’m swooning over that rug! 🥰
That is an antique rug! I think it's an Heirloom design but I haven't found it yet any of the old catalogs!

Rugs were used in castles on the walls for warmth from middle ages. And also as bed coverings.
Yes those were typically woven. I have lots of episodes on the many textile making techniques but we haven't gotten into tapestries and weaving yet. Soon!

How do you make a turn
How does it not unravel since there's nothing to hold the thread?
Como se llama el gancho para ppoderlo pedir por aliesprex
How can I find the same rug hooks that you use?
That's a tough one. I often use a vintage hook that's flat and I don't even know who made it. If I find another I'll tell you!
Could I use crochet hooks for this? I have a ton of those.
It seems like it would work but it doesn't work well. I rug hook has a sharper head to poke through and the crook is deeper to grab better.
