Ah, winter! For those who live in northern climates, winter means snow, cold, ice, wind, short days and long nights.
While some of us may prefer to stay inside - maybe by a fireplace - others hit the ski slopes, zip across the ice or rev up the snowmobile.
If you’re a fan of cold weather, hopefully your dog is too. Which got us wondering: What are some of the best cold-weather dog breeds ?

There are dogs that are “ tolerant “ of cold harsh winters ,and then there are dogs who thrive in it. Siberian husky, Malamute, Canadian Inuit or Eskimo dog..interestingly the Siberian Husky is the only dog that can change their chemical metabolism, enabling them to run for hours on end, while still conserving their fat storage, avoiding fatigue. They truly thrive in the far northern regions that bore them.
Surprised the Norwegian Elkhound made the list. They often get left out, but are great winter companions.

ViralBe used to have a Tibetan terrier, she was a wonderful dog. How was the Labrador retriever not on the list? Had one as a kid and he would get overheated playing in the snow and then break the ice in our little stream and lay down

I like a illyrian shepherd i have one he is gentel with kids but a little agressive with strangers i never trained him but he is a insane protection dog.Btw he is tolerant to strangers when he is with me.I never have that breed of dog but he is the best one for me he fucking love snow and can be in a cold weather for days.
We live in Canada and we get as low -35 celsius in the winter. My neighbor (Karen) proudly owner of a cute Chiwawa. Called the police on us because my 135 Pounds Great Pyrenees mix Newfoundland stays all year around outside. Fortunately one of the officers understood and knew about dogs. So all good now.

Same thing happened with me and my Tibetan Mastiff!! I live in the coldest areas on the big island of Hawai’i and it drops down to 30-40 at night less if we have snow on Mauna Loa and it’s always chilly at this high altitude and when our new neighbor moved in down the street they were concerned about my 5 Tibetan Mastiffs!! They are my protection against thieves and are guarding my home on my acre of land. She’s called the cops so many times and animal control! They just shake their heads and tell her that this breed was MADE for colder climates and to do her research. I’m so happy people are sticking up for us and these breeds! Not everyone gets it with these beautiful cold climate lovers 😂❤🐕🐶
I had an Alaskan Malamute couch potato for 17 years. What an amazing dog, though not for everyone.

Turkish Kangal got really good tolerate against freezing weather too
not as well as these dogs, for example caucasian shepherd and tibetan mastiff and others
The dogs in this vid can take Arctic type cold.
Tho I do think the Kangal would develop a thicker coat if it was in real cold.
@@gumboot65 you re right but the temperature in the towns where kangals live can decrease like -30 °C and i think thats pretty enough to say kangal dog breeds have good tolerate against freezing weather of course not like Alaskan malamute.
Agreed, And obviously they can be outdoors with their flocks and herds. For most people the Kangal would be plenty cold weather proof.
Maybe for Mediterranean winter but not for Russian, Mongolian, Kazakh or Canadian winters.
Corgies live in snow,mine was litterly hopping around like a bunny in it and running a marathon.
You have forgotten the Greenland Dog. Roald Amundsen used them to reach the south pole.

I don’t think this list is necessarily saying they can’t handle cold, just that there are at least ten other breeds that can handle it better. That being said I too was disappointed they didn’t make it on here

I can’t decide between the Great Pyrenees, St. Bernard or Newfoundland. I love them all but have, and love, a Great Pyrenees mix. I also love the Bernese Mountain dog, which you missed.

What about the east Siberian laika, American Akita, Pyrenean mastiff, Bernese mountain dog, Canadian Eskimo and the greenland mountain dog and the infamous wolf hybrid dog breeds
