As a black greek, and former step-team member I have to say these girls brought it, plain and simple. They were the best team out there and they deserved the win. My brothers and sisters, this sense of entitlement in some of our people is tired and old. We will die out if we continue to rest on what we "deserve". We can and must compete in life based on our skill and intelligence.
This is one of the MOST awesome performances I've ever seen & possibly the best step show I've witnessed in my life. Of course, I'm from the North & I know what we have up here doesn't compare to the South when it comes to step shows.....but, these girls went HARD!!!!!!! I can't speak for the other performances at that show, as I haven't seen any of them, but these ladies were INCREDIBLE! Stepping is VERY hard, especially as a group. These girls are great dancers also! My point is, I think they would've won, even if they weren't White, but the fact they WERE makes it that much more exciting...YES...a TOTAL wow factor!!!!!!! I don't know if the comments below about them being involved with other African American steppers is true, but if so, then they do most likely have an understanding & respect for what stepping is all about. From the way they pulled this off, isn't that OBVIOUS??! Someone else below also commented & said that the choreographer was Black. That would explain quite a bit. In fact, if that's true, than those stating that this sorority "stole" from our culture have no basis for their argument. And the same would also go for those who complained about them not fully understanding the value, importance & cultural relevance to stepping. The bottom line is, these ladies did an excellent job. They nailed it! I'm proud of them. I give them mad props for having the dedication, motivation & COURAGE to cross culture lines & break stereotypes. I also give kudos to the choreographer, whoever he or she was. Not only did they do a PHENOMENAL job choreographing this, but to believe in these girls, give them a chance & to also have the courage to do all I just mentioned above. I just love it!!!! I think it's great. I'll admit, it has expanded my own personal perception, that's for sure..... Way to go ladies (& choreographer)!!!!!!!! :-)
I read in a New York Times article that their sorority has been stepping for more that 16 years. At their university in Arizona (I think) they have a unity event with the Black sorority and fraternities where they learn about each others traditions and cultures. Their sorority learned step and adopted it and compete locally.
Dammmmn, must give you ladies props! I'm a black gal and it is about time my other sisters stepped up their game! You ladies were awesome! I am gettin an group of low income lil' sisters off the ground and Stepping will be the primary spotlight because it is something they can have for their own immediately, without funds. I have lil black girls, lil white girls, lil brown girls and lil yellow girls, you ladies have inspired. Thank you.
Former military drill team here. Graduate of the discipline academy in Charleston, SC known as The Citadel. This was unbelievable! Competition is about making us all better. Instead of complaining, do better next year. The challenge is on. Imagination has been called to task. This is what makes us winners. Zetas, you are the winners, you left no doubts. Do not let corporate Americas spinelessness take from you what you earned!
I still love seeing this. That was absolutely perfect. Zeta Tau Alpha burned the hell out of the rivalry and even now you can her the cries and whimpers. Many sororities still suffer the nightmares and psychological illness of this day. This step was edged in Greek history FOREVER!!!! ~compliments from your nasty neighborhood Que >;D
Soley based upon execution, style, creativity and timing...this gruop was far superior and it shows that they took their practice time serious...good job! They had nothing to lose and the brought it...hard!!!!
As a fraternity member and old stepper, all I want to say to those who don't like this group is STEP up your game because they were good. They were on beat, loud steppers and their theme was on point. You can tell they worked hard and that is what our nation needs to grasp. If you want revenge, go and win a gold medal in Snow Boarding or any one of what some call "Their" sports... Don't be what we've lived to hate for so many years. This is 2010. Good job ZTA!
Thanks to SPRITE for providing OVER 1.5 MILLION dollars to all the STUDENTS scholarship money for their educations as a parent of one of the steppers i am blessed by this gift and would like to remind all "THE POSTERS" that it was about these young adults that want a better life through education.(most all of steppers were all very nice to our girls only a very few were not AND OUR GIRLS HAD A REMARKABLE LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE they did not step to offend they step because of the lovefor it )
Give Props where props are do, I am from the old school, I got busy in the early 90's and my team got steps from what we saw and few things we made up. Its all about how well you perform when you do step. They stayed intense the entire show. They stepped, and represented the art of stepping well and I don't care where they learned it. Everything starts with us we just have to change the game if we want to win! step correct or lose with pride! Step Master 93!
You can't fake stepping. It's not like copying off of someone's notes during a test to get the same results of them. Either you can do it or you can't. Just because I'm black doesn't mean I have a rhythm muscle anymore than these ladies have a lack of one because they're white. Credit should always be given where it's due and these ladies did an awesome job.
Great job ladies! No excuses. This shows America is moving in the right direction when we forget about cultural differences and do our best at whatever we chose to do. Change We can Belive In!
They worked hard, coping, but it was missing something heartfelt and spirit filled. I usually get goose bumps when I watch a good step show. Landed Flat. But they did stump in unison.
In 1842, the American physician John Gorrie, designed and built an air-cooling apparatus, whose basic principle--that of compressing a gas, cooling it by sending it through radiating coils, and then expanding it to lower the temperature further, and was granted the first U.S. patent for mechanical refrigeration in 1851.
Man, I didn't even know ZTA of the U of A won this!(Considering I didn't attend my first year till Fall of 2010) Imma about to go congratulate every member I know!
AKA should be proud! They started teaching all of the other sororities how to step for their Unity Step Show over 10 years ago. They shared the history and importance of the tradition along with the steps, so don't hate if you weren't there. BTW, Zetas were invited to compete - they didn't show up begging. Everyone can use scholarship - hell, these girls ARE from Arkansas. If they deserved it, good for them.
Instead of hating on these girls for shining in the spotlight everyone else should step there game up. They were terrific I was at that step show rooting for the Kappas and truth be told they were the best. I'm sure they're going to be back next year so whats everyone going to do about. Sit and complain or get to Steppin.
These young Ladies should have keep their title . They are so good. I am a black woman and what happened to them shows that racism is still around stronger then ever. I think you guys are amazing don't give up come back next year and do it again..
wow congrats yall girls did good ,,, i dont care if your blue ,pink or purple yall deserve it ...& DONT WORRY ABOUT DEM HATERS LETTEM HATE ..GREAT JOB!!
The best part of this was these girls stepped, and didn't use music or new-age dance moves. They kept it pure like the original steppers are supposed to. They probably understand the Divine 9, more than the original 9 and that's why this wasn't even close. They STEPPED and left it all on the floor! Don't hate...just congratulate.
Just as tennis, golf, flying, scuba (which I enjoy) sky diving etc., is not dependent upon one's ethic background, neither is Stepping. These young ladies practiced a very intricate dance pattern and wowed the judges, more power to them. I am impressed. Lastly, regardless of how we became Americans, that is exactly what we are Americans and if we are to continue to live as free Americans, we'd better find a way to live together or we will go under ..(continued)
JP - Sprite wanted to get in good with black folks and wound up with egg on their face. These white girls deserve our respect because they STOMPED A HOLE IN THE FLOOR.
For my 2 cents. I attended a predominatly "white" college in South GA in the 70s and black fraternities had just made it to my campus. White frats and soros didn't really understand what stepping was all about and really had no desire to do it. ZTA and a white greek frats celebrated Old South Week with confederate uniforms and southern bell outfits to boot.. Now we are 30 plus years from that time and a chapter of ZTA wins a Step Off. Now that is progress - I'll continue..
It was a matter of time. Have you ever watched high school and college cheer leading competitions? I see stepping no different than that. In fact, it reminded more of those competitions especially the pyramid and the girl being spotted afterwards...
I'm nor white or black but can say this...If this step dance can so much affect other races to where they train to the degree of joining competitions then this only proves how this traditional dance can truly inspire. It's like someone embracing anothers legacy. Its a beautiful thing. I respect & understand the anger that came out of this from the blacks and personaly, although the white group did good I don't think they shoul've been 1st place, that's just my opinion, respectively speaking.
Update. I just seen then finally for MTV Sprite Step off. Come to find out that because of an error in judging the Zetas and the AKA's are co champions. Both got 100,000
Watched them all, ZTA clearly had the better routine. Everyone seemed like they were just screwing around. Even the audience knew they were better as apparent by their reactions.

Im "BLACK" and Ive seen alot of stepshows Ive seen the steps B4....but the key is "PRECISION" they tore it 4rm da FLOOR UP....dammmm gotta watch it again!!!
At the end of the day, I don't have a problem with anyone truly embracing a culture. I, myself, have embraced the Latin-American culture, and have taken the time to learn more about the vast civilizations it makes up. And for it I have been embraced by them. @snupey1978 ABSOLUTELY!!! 100% CORRECT!!!! Competition is competition. The BEST performance won! Be ready for them next year ladies and gentlemen. Now you know what you're up against. STEP it up!
Good show. The only thing is they're not making the stepping noise with the actual hands and foot movements. It's pre -recorded. It's kind of like lip synching. They're doing to movement, but there not making the beat ! When you're a really good stepper and step as a team it's nice to hear all the sound and steps together. That's how you know your step team is hitting it!
Yes!!! gweddie767 they did rock I must say they did the dam thing. I am from a HBCU in JXN, MS and I have been to many step shows, and these ladies represented to the fullest!!! I heard the black sororities walked off haten!!!
Yall need to grow up. Hell I could make a step dance and not know what I'm doing but if it has a certain "move" its stealing? Yal little girls need to grow up. Good job girls
As African-Americans we should celebrate with, high honors, and deliberate purpose the guts and fortitude it takes to walk into a culturally unfamiliar territory and WIN! All I gotta say is DAMN!!!! They tore it up. I'm black & I've been to step shows but this was by far the BEST performance I've ever seen. Some blacks preach diversity & inclusion but want to segregate themselves. You can't have it both ways! I don't think they should share 1st prize with anybody. They won fair & square. Sounds more like appeasement & compromise to the old Black Guard to me. Whoever heard of two 1st place winners in a contest. Totally defeats the purpose of having a competition.
To those who don't think race had anything to do with this competition, let me give you a little history lesson...THIS AMERICA!!! It's a fix, just like everything else here, and if you don't believe it, just keep living. The crowd is excited because of the newness of seeing something different in these competitions...awed...don't get it twisted.

Wins the crowd at 0.40! Nearly 10 years later and it’s still the best!
Nice job ladies, It takes alot of hard work and dedication to learn steps like that...Two thumbs up from an AKA
Netflix's "Step Sisters" brought me here.
srhje Me, too

Except THIS is so much better than that
Me too. Just saw it today.
Sameee
These girls kicked ass!!! Can't wait to see them next year.

JP - Sprite wanted to get in good with black folks and wound up with egg on their face. These white girls deserve our respect because they STOMPED A HOLE IN THE FLOOR.
@fobluv4lyfe That's a perfect summary of the issues here. Thanks.
amazing

Update. I just seen then finally for MTV Sprite Step off. Come to find out that because of an error in judging the Zetas and the AKA's are co champions. Both got 100,000
I don't care what color you are, those gals did the damn thing!!
Where did zta learn how to step like that? They did good
Watched them all, ZTA clearly had the better routine. Everyone seemed like they were just screwing around.
Even the audience knew they were better as apparent by their reactions.
love it.
@Trenz73 Actually, Trenz73, I have been out of college for quite a few years now. But thank you for your concern.
They were out for blood! LOVED IT!
WRONG! At the end of the day stepping is NOT stepping. This form of stepping has a heritage and history behind it so you can't just lump it in with another cultures form of stepping. I didn't say them being white is the reason they won but the novelty factor could have been. From what I did see they were average, compared to what I have seen in years previous this paled in comparison (no pun intended). Perhaps you are right though maybe the other schools just sucked this year.
I dont care what color they are.....they rocked it!
They Destroyed it! This SIgma gives'em two thumbs up!!
@nuced - Thank you...that was well said and it does cheapen the award.

Right on HermitRichard
Tiger took over golf..... we're taking Step Dance !!!!
That brought a tear to my eye. Well done.
Great job ladies. I saw the CNN report and though you did an awesome job and am happy to see this. Yo! Nupe from MO
Who cares, everyone has to "learn" steps...learning them doesn't mean that the performance will ROCK THE DAMN HOUSE...and that's what they did!!
Yes!!! gweddie767 they did rock I must say they did the dam thing. I am from a HBCU in JXN, MS and I have been to many step shows, and these ladies represented to the fullest!!! I heard the black sororities walked off haten!!!
That was clean as hell!
This is a ROO
@BySCD I could not have worded it better!
Yall need to grow up. Hell I could make a step dance and not know what I'm doing but if it has a certain "move" its stealing? Yal little girls need to grow up. Good job girls
pure souless!!!
i was wondering when they were going to do the matrix. that was one of the best steps performances ive seen.
As African-Americans we should celebrate with, high honors, and deliberate purpose the guts and fortitude it takes to walk into a culturally unfamiliar territory and WIN! Weve been doing it for 400 years. Sprite you are the weak ones here. You let us down. You let the cause down. There are no white and black winners. There are just WINNERS! THAT is what the struggle is all about.
We gave you people the presidency, can't we have stepping
All I gotta say is DAMN!!!! They tore it up. I'm black & I've been to step shows but this was by far the BEST performance I've ever seen. Some blacks preach diversity & inclusion but want to segregate themselves. You can't have it both ways! I don't think they should share 1st prize with anybody. They won fair & square. Sounds more like appeasement & compromise to the old Black Guard to me. Whoever heard of two 1st place winners in a contest. Totally defeats the purpose of having a competition.
I didn't think stuff like 'Bring it on' actually occurred in the real world...holy shit have I been sheltered.
To those who don't think race had anything to do with this competition, let me give you a little history lesson...THIS AMERICA!!! It's a fix, just like everything else here, and if you don't believe it, just keep living.
