MASTER OF WINE Tries WORST Wines from VIVINO Under $20

  • To get this out of the way - I am not being paid by Vivino for this Video and I have not used Vivino much in the past. It seems like many wine drinkers do use it today.
According to their website more than 52 million users and more than 74 million reviews, which is a lot. I realized that when I looked up the wines for this tasting
Vivino does not give you the option to sort by worst-rated wines and you do not have the option to search for wines rated 2 or 1 stars. As a matter of fact: I did not find any wines rated below 2 Stars and I did find very few wines rated under 3 Stars. I looked for wines that are widely available internationally so you should be able to get most of them in your market if you want to… I want to find out how useful these scores are and will rate the wines myself according to the 100 point scale. I am going to taste the wines the same way a Vivino user would taste them - not blind.

Just found this channel few days ago, and already addicted to it. As a hungarian phrase says "i drink all your words". As a hungarian i really wondery what is your opinion about hungarian wines. It should be a dream come true, if you taste some kind of wines from our famous regions like Tokaj, Villány, Eger or Badacsony and share your experiences with us. Keep this great way on!

Happy to come across your comment. Discovered the great wines of Hungary last year on holiday in Hungary. Started to wonder why we don't find it (or only 1-2 bottles) in stores here in the Netherlands. May really be worth letting Western Europe discover Hungarian wine. Plus, it seems Tokaj is on the way to restoring its former glory. Quite smart of the Rothschilds and the AXA insurance company, among others, heavily investing in Tokaj land and winemaking after the communist era (which drastically deteriorated wine quality), it seems like a foolproof investment.

I tasted a 3.3 star Nero d'Avola (Gaetano d'Aquino) and I was surprised by how good it was. I'm not sure if my palate isn't yet educated enough, but I actually found it very good. It tasted of plum, a bit of chocolate and a bit of rosemary.

Previously, I used Delectable to search for wine. My impression is that it was used by a more educated audience than Vivino. Especially in Russia, where at that time (about 8 years ago) people gave undeservedly good marks to bad wines in Vivino, which spoiled the experience. But now Delectable has turned into abandonware, and Vivino, on the contrary, has improved considerably. However, I still miss Delectable.

All kinds of sulphuric smells - burnt match, rubber, rotten egg, skunk (reduced rosé is vomit-inducing for me 🤮), etc. A bit of reduction on some whites can be nice, but anything that doesn’t go away after a couple of seconds is a flaw, in my book.

Only found this channel recently and absolutely love the content and down to earth nature.
I grew up in South Africa, then moved to Paris and now London. I worked in many restaurants in South Africa and I find it very disappointing to see so few of the great wines making their way into Europe. Many of the major producers are capable of running large scale export businesses and it saddens me to think that South Africa is so criminally underrated as a wine region within Europe.

You owe it to yourself to taste some port then! I also hadn’t tried many dessert wines before, and now I’m in love with them, especially port. A good sweet wine can be the dessert all by itself, or you can pair it with confectionery, cheeses or fruit. Ideally, the wine will be sweeter than the dish, although this isn’t always possible.

Land costs, growing the grapes, picking the grapes, pressing, fermenting, aging, bottling, costs of the bottle, cap, cardboard for the case, label, shipping across the ocean, distribution, stocking in the store...it boggles the mind.

The difference between white and red wine scores is interesting and it is completely in sync with my personal experience - whenever I visit a place where I suspect they serve bad wine, I always choose red wine because I find bad red wines more bearable than bad white wines. Is there any expert explanation of this phenomenon?

    • @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine
      @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

There are many explanations. Reds usually come last in a tasting or a menu and are therefore considered the highlight. They are often more expensive to make and in certain markets like China they are considered to be more valuable because of their colour. There was a time when white sweet wines were more expensive.

I might do a boxed wine tasting. On the swirling point - I do think that it is important to swirl sparkling wines in order to be able to smell them. The loss of CO2 is not a big issue when assessing the wine as you can determine the CO2 level with the first sip.

I'm not sure whether the scores you mentioned were the overall scores across all vintages, or score of the vintage that you're tasting (I would assume the former, because I don't think these wines have that many ratings for each vintage).
but I've seen in vivino that some wines have totally different score for different vintages, especially if the vintage was good or bad in the region.
with that said, I request a clip talking about your insights and opinions about vintages (how much it matters, and vintage scores from RP, WE, WS, etc.)

My problem with Vivino is the wide descriptions of wine. You can tell when a serious wine person gives a review, but often a review says “Too Sweet” while another says “Too Dry”🤔

It's pretty interesting how it's hard to find really low scores on Vivino. I think there's a lot of wines on there that have scores they don't deserve. You should review the Apothic Inferno... would love to hear what you think.

Plese try the Farnese Edizione Cinque Autoctoni. 4.3 rating, almost 60k ratings and not cheap at around 22€. Yet, i was so overwhelmed with the flavors and it tasted so manipulated and manually improved. Maybe i need new tastebuds and would love to hear your opinion. Thanks

Please try the Hans Greyl Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. It has a 4.2 rating (top 1% wines in the world) and is distributed by Vivino (and some supermarkets like Edeka) for 7€. I found it a bit bland and would really appreciate your opinion.

Wondering if you would ever review boxed wine? I know wine is surging in sales right now and I'll bet it's in large part to boxed wine. Are any reputable people doing it? Does the bag hurt flavor? Are there any worth it? Lots of boxed wine questions!

Can't say this was my favorite episode. I cringed as you had to taste those wines. I once sold the Caliterra wines. I believe It started out as a Mondavi-Chadwick project, then acquired by Jackson Family Estates perhaps for distribution in the US. It's Colchagua Valley and part of it is aged in 2nd and 3rd passage oak for 7-9 months. The Cenit and Tribute part of the line are much better. I had retsina once and that was once too many. I hear most of it is sold to the CIA for their black site interrogations...very effective! How about one on classic terroir reflective examples from the major French, Italian, Spanish etc top appellations. Good video but my condolences to your palate!

Vivino has California cabernet sauvignon wines rated 4.4 for under 30 dollars. So far I've agreed with the consensus of reviewers. By contrast in an email I got today from Vivino were well known Bordeaux that were lower rated and stupid expensive. I had all but two of these wines in my cellar from top rated years 89 and 90 I sold off through Sotheby’s. I much prefer California wines. Superb wines Vivino sells at killer prices and free shipping in the US for orders of 150 dollars or more. For 6 dollars a case they'll pack it with ice which is good in the summer. I'm a happy customer.
