Yes, an aircraft in the air is relatively safe from a lightning strike. The energy will travel through the aluminium skin and leave it on its way to ground. But, if the stroke has enough energy, it can penetrate the aircraft's insulation and possibly fry electronics, initiate internal fires, or even ignite fuel vapours in the tanks. If it fries flight-critical electronics, such as engine control units, the plane's in trouble.

Actually they are designed for lightning strikes. Conductive elements typically on the trailing edge of surfaces or within the paint itself allow a better electrical path rather than through the on board electronic devices. There is always the risk of a potential difference before the dissimilar parts reach equipotential. Lighting is like static in some ways, so you'll also notice bonding straps on control surfaces and panels. I saw this first hand working on F18 Hornets.

    This is how lightning happens:
Charges from the clouds emit towards the ground and the first charge to make contact forms that iconic lightning hit. Once that occurs, electricity from the cloud is transferred to the ground in a series of pulses.
By this definition, if the lightning would've hit the plane then the lightning would not have gone "through it". This means that the lightning strike occurred behind the plane. Otherwise the lightning strike would have stopped at the plane.
This is also why things at a higher altitude are more likely to be hit, because there's a greater chance that one of the charges will make contact first before the other charges emitted.
Just a coincidence that makes it appear as if the plane was hit.
But planes usually have some way of defending against lightning strikes.

It's dramatic to see in video, but as some here have pointed out, it's not unusual for aircraft to be struck by lightning while in flight and they're designed to deal with it. In fact, an aircraft passing through the air generates its own static charge which the aircraft is designed to dissipate back into the atmosphere without disruption or damage. During my years in the air force, the only damage I saw to aircraft that had been struck by lightning was if there were skin panels that had undetected delamination in them (delamination is an separation or air bubble that has developed between the outer layers of the panel). A lightning strike could suddenly superheat and expand the air bubble in the delaminated panel(s) and blow the outer layer of the panel(s) off, which sometimes the air crew didn't even realize had happened until they landed and it was discovered on post flight inspection. I also once saw a broken nose radome from an in flight lightning strike, the damage was again suspected to have been aggravated by undetected prior delamination. That time the crew was very aware of when it happened, but the aircraft continued on and landed safely. In more extreme examples, there may be a hole found in an outer skin panel where the lightning entered. Sometimes the air crew was aware of being struck by lightning or suspected it, and although they detected no damage, they would simply note their suspicion in the maintenance forms to make the ground crew aware of the need to check for possible lightning-related damage. It was typically pretty routine.

But, since it is full metal coated, the lightnings goes all the way through the plane's body 'til it dissipates, finding a way out. Agh, the stupid drives me crazy. Alright, folks, for the record, there is a very long list of federal airworthiness standards regarding the certification of transport category aircraft which must be demonstrated to the Administrator's satisfaction before the plane is allowed to enter service. Here are a few relevant excerpts:
    FAR Part 25, section 581:
"(a) The airplane must be protected against catastrophic effects from lightning.
    (b) For metallic components, compliance with paragraph (a) of this section may be shown by-
    (1) Bonding the components properly to the airframe; or
    (2) Designing the components so that a strike will not endanger the airplane.
    (c) For nonmetallic components, compliance with paragraph (a) of this section may be shown by-
    (1) Designing the components to minimize the effect of a strike; or
    (2) Incorporating acceptable means of diverting the resulting electrical current so as not to endanger the airplane."
    Section 954:
"The fuel system must be designed and arranged to prevent the ignition of fuel vapor within the system by-
    (a) Direct lightning strikes to areas having a high probability of stroke attachment;
    (b) Swept lightning strokes to areas where swept strokes are highly probable; and
    (c) Corona and streamering at fuel vent outlets."
    Section 1316:
"(a) Each electrical and electronic system that performs a function, for which failure would prevent the continued safe flight and landing of the airplane, must be designed and installed so that-
    (1) The function is not adversely affected during and after the time the airplane is exposed to lightning; and
    (2) The system automatically recovers normal operation of that function in a timely manner after the airplane is exposed to lightning.
    (b) Each electrical and electronic system that performs a function, for which failure would reduce the capability of the airplane or the ability of the flightcrew to respond to an adverse operating condition, must be designed and installed so that the function recovers normal operation in a timely manner after the airplane is exposed to lightning."

Actually, airplanes could get affected by lightning strikes. The power surge from the discharge could get into the plane's electronics and/or create sparks that might get in the fuel system causing explosion. Of course, these are extremely rare occurrences but it does happen from time to time. The airliners are very much aware of these risks and have addressed most of the issues concerning an event of lightning striking a plane, emphasis on the word "most".

    To answer all your questions:
The exterior of the aeroplane experiences great pressure variations due to the displacement of air from high velocity objects. This variation in pressure diffracts electromagnetic waves such as visible light causing the horizontal flashes you noticed as the lightning passes behind the aeroplane. Also for those curious as the the properties of electricity, it does have mass and charge and effectively travels at the speed of light (despite the electrons themselves travelling only at limited velocity).
If you freeze the frame of the greatest intensity you can still see the centre of the fuselage, suggesting that electricity was not passing on both sides of the plane and most probably only behind it.

The whole "tire" explanation is dead wrong. Why? After traveling that far through the air, (which is an insulator just like rubber is) do you really think lightning would have any trouble going a few extra feet around the tire? Hell no.

Just thought I'd add my part. Lightning does occasionly strike aircrafts, with this in mind, engineers specifically design components within the aluminium skin to prevent big disasters. The lightning passes through the outside of the plane and then down to Earth, with only minor disturbance to the intruments in the cockpit.

Electricity needs a conductor to pass through and depending on the capacity of the conductor, the damage can be expected. Electricity always passes though shortest path and in this case there is no path as such. A lot of static current will be accumulated by the external body of the plane and subsequently the plane is designed with materials that will not conduct the same to internal body or parts. It is possible that during touch down the plane may have smoked substantial.

Wrong I'm afraid, the lightning did hit the plane and it survived due to the fact that like cars, planes also form a Faraday cage, it may not be a design feature but by chance objects formed by a complete mesh protects what is held within...the lightning's current flows around it and carries on down to its ground point.

While I believe the lightning struck behind the plane in the footage, I know that even if it did indeed strike the plane, the argument that the plane would stop or even crash is invalid. Planes no a days are made from composite materials that don't conduct electricity, which would cause them to heat up and burn (explode). But to prevent this manufacturers use metal (usually aluminum) mesh about 1/1000th of an inch thick to direct electricity away from from the body of the plane and safely to the nearest point of least resistance. If a plane now a days was struck by lightning, nothing more than a few ruptured ear drums would occur.

  • @bradrhoades9816

    • @WhereAllTheRumGone

Planes have a certain material that have good electrical conductivity on their exterior, such as aluminium, which is designed to allow a safe way for the lightning to pass through the material and keep travelling in it's original direction towards the earth. Nice try trying to be a smart-ass.

    • @WhereAllTheRumGone
      @WhereAllTheRumGone 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

***** Ummm so you agreed with me then??... cause what you just described was a Faraday Cage...and that's my point, that's what protects the plane. it properly wasn't designed to be Lightning proof, more as a side benefit.

It all depends, if it hits on a fastener head it's easy, but if it hits the skin it requires cutting the damage area and installation of a filler and doubler with two rows of new fasteners added around the cut out. The repair could take anywhere from 8 to 35 hrs depending on the type of repair that calls out on the structural repair manual (SRM) of every aircraft

  • @BallisticAero

Well timed, but actually the strike happened behind the plane and the bulge of light seen is merely just the light refraction from the shape of the plane being cylindrical. A different effect would have been seen had the lightning actually hit the plane, not to mention 2 things: the positive charges coming from the plane that high up most likely wouldn't have been enough to attract the negative charges of the cumulonimbus in such a large strike, and secondly the plane would've experienced an EMP effect as the positive and negative charges would have jumbled the planes electronic instruments most likely causing a short in electrical power.
