- On the 23rd of July, 1945, in a clandestine maneuver unbeknownst to many, the USS Barb, a U.S. submarine, stealthily surfaced near Sakhalin Island's coast. Emerging from its depths were eight men, swiftly boarding two inflatable boats to navigate to the shoreline.
Upon arrival, they commenced their covert operation. What was their objective? Their mission entailed affixing a 55-pound explosive device onto the railway tracks utilized by Japanese trains for the transportation of troops and military provisions. While three men stood guard over the boats, three others meticulously arranged the device.
Their task was fraught with challenges. At one juncture, they were compelled to seek shelter as a train passed by. Nonetheless, they persevered, successfully installing the mechanism designed to detonate upon the pressure exerted by a passing train, causing a swift and decisive disruption.
During their retreat to the submarine, the sound of an approaching train reached their ears. As they ascended the vessel, a colossal explosion seized their attention. Though the detonation was orchestrated by the submarine's crew, the USS Barb was credited with executing one of the most pivotal missions in submarine history-a mission that resulted in the sinking of a train, earning them widespread acclaim and recognition.
