Samuel Beckett - "Mute" Interview for Swedish Television - 1969

  • On October 23, 1969, Samuel Beckett's publisher, Jérôme Lindon, received a telegram from the Swedish Academy informing him that Beckett had been awarded the 1969 Nobel Prize in Literature. Lindon swiftly relayed the message to Beckett with a telegram of his own: "Dear Sam and Suzanne. In spite of everything, they have given you the Nobel Prize--I advise you to go into hiding."
According to Lindon, both Beckett and his wife were appalled and distressed by the announcement of the prize. Beckett anticipated the disruption of his reclusive lifestyle by way of this immediate spike in fame.
Beckett, then staying at the Hotel Riadh in Nabeul, Tunisia, nevertheless agrees to an interview with Swedish Television but on the condition that he is asked no questions.
    - paraphrased from "Damned to Fame" by James Knowlson

He was renowned for his dark sense of humour in life as well as in his plays, which a lot of people don't spot in his work. Once while watching the sunset with a friend, his friend is said to have remarked, "Ahh, it's great to be alive" to which Beckett replied, "I wouldn't go that far."

I think it was Pinter and Beckett watching cricket at Lord's, with someone scoring a hundred before lunch on a beautiful summer's day. Pinter: "It's the sort of day that makes you glad to be alive." SB: "I wouldn't go that far."

This one was shot in Tunisia. Beckett's silence has always been a substitute for language, but here in this video, there are some background voices of Tunisian people speaking to each other in Tunisian dialect, using all types of gross words that most Tunisians use in their daily conversations 😆! As a Beckettian scholar myself, I can recognize that as a tragicomic irony! Beckett wanted this interview to be silent, yet Tunisians filled in the gaps of his silence in their own way...However, because what they say is utterly meaningless, then it is for that reason as well that we can consider the whole thing as Beckettian 🙃!

The silent walks with his father were his utopia. The silence in "Unnamable" takes the form of the utopia of a world redeemed from unjust pain, a world that will not reproduce dark fine arts like Beckett's.
