I needed to make some sort of sheath/mask for a hatchet. This was exactly what I needed to walk me through the process! I didn't have any PVC pipe but I found some scrap vinyl siding and it worked well enough. Thank you!
Thank you Mark for a very well done tutorial. I liked it so much I made one for my camp hatchet. but I used a chunk of plastic down spout material, It worked like a charm ! Thanks again.
Amazing! I come from a family of plumbers with PVC everywhere around the house? I never knew you could do that with PVC! My mind is tickin’ on PVC related projects now! Great idea! Heat gun ... on the list! Check! Thanks for sharing your ideas!
PVC is soo versatile, lawn furniture frames, military surplus alice pack frames, knife/axes/hatchet sheaths, recurve bows, really online limited to our imagination, pvc is TRULY AMAZING AND AWESOME!!
You know I love these projects. Great demo. I need to find a bench vice like that. I have always wanted one and they are the extra hand I need in the shop.
Thanks Jeep. Hard to hit the balance between too much content and not enough. The vice is just an old Mastercraft from Canadian Tire...not the best but it works for me. Thanks for commenting
I've yet to see anyone making a pvc mask for an axe/hatchet that placed a small oblong piece of wood atop one face/side of the axe, allowing for an indentation that could accommodate the riveting of a belt loop attachment. I've employed silicone to mould masks in the past with limited success, but intend trying the pvc idea, incorporating my own idea for the belt loop. Thanks for uploading! I know it's been three years, since you posted this vid, but TH-cam has only put it into my recommendations under half an hour ago.
Thankyou Mark. I have an axe that needs a mask, but it has a very difficult head design to work around. Your template design and tutorial have provided the solution that I needed.
Old video, but glad I found it. This may well prove to be the solution for my tomahawk. I want to make a belt/molle sheath for my hawk that will holster with/without the handle. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed the video. I do have some of the washers and have used them on projects where there is a risk of the rivet being pulled out. I have thought of doing something similar on my kayak. Thanks for commenting
I have a couple of hatchets and tomahawks that need a blade cover. This is a great design. I’m thinking maybe I can play around with the ‘ears’ and get it to snap on and off. 🤔 Thanks for this video 😎
very impressive result. i use pvc for all sorts of things, you can easily form it. i did a axe sheath simply by molding it over the sharp edge and used a strand and molded it over the back to form a simple clip. you can use alcohol in a spraycan and a lighter to heat the pvc, so you can also achieve big projects.
Thanks and I'll be waiting on the sheath project. I happen to have several sheets of plastic signs from work of various thicknesses that I make various size cutting boards out of. You just added more projects to the list. :-)
Hi Mark, sure appreciated this video, I have 2 Fiskars hatchets like yours, I'm going to make me a couple of those masks. Thanks so much! I've looked many times for a mask for them, and been unsuccessful.
I am glad you found the video helpful. The Fiskars is the very reason I made the PVC masks. So hard to find anything else to fit them and an custom leather one would cost more than the axe. Thanks for commenting
Real nice mask quite simple and easy. So inexpensive that If you lost it you won't cry 😉 I have am axe and a hatchet that need one, now I know how I am going to do, Thanks so much for the idea 👍
@@MarkYoungBushcraft ended up using a granfors axe mask i had given to me without a strap. then punched two holes on either side and ran a piece of paracord through the holes like the hullefors axe mask and then uses a barrel lock to hold the two ends tight. works for now. i did find a granfors leather axe mask that fits my x -11 at canadian outdoor equipment.
Great informative video! I'm going to try one with gallon milk jug plastic and one from qiart oil container plastic, same concept. Cheers from New Orleans
Glad you enjoyed the video. I can certainly do a complete cook set video. Probably a short series. I have been a bit of a pack rat and have a collection of cookware and stoves, etc that I could show options with. Thanks for commenting
Thank you for sharing this, great project as on my last camp I lost my little rubber strip on the edge of my axe an it then put a hole in my £150 rucksack 👍⛰
Very nice, Mark. Sometimes I think you're reading my mind. A PVC neck knife sheath has been on my to-do list for a few months, and now you've provided the guidance I need (especially the type of PVC). I've already purchased the hot air gun and pop rivet tool. I'll let you know how it turns out (keeping in mind that v1.0 is hardly ever the final version). P.S. I located a chap just up the street who will sell me "green" coffee beans, so home roasted coffee is also in my near future.
I have not tried stain but it is an interesting idea. There are some good spray paints intended for PVC that work well but do eventually scratch off. Easy enough to touch up though. Thanks for commenting
I've never thought about using PVC to make a sheath. What a great ideal. I was wondering if you tried adding an additional chin between where you add the pop rivets, similar to what you would see on some leather sheaths.
PVC is easy to work with and very inexpensive. The nice thing about designing sheaths with PVC is that if it doesn't work out, you haven't wasted a lot of money. Your idea of an extra chin may be worth trying. Thanks for commenting
Some of us are not that talented I guess😉. Actually, I agree...I need to start working in leather. Much more functional and ascetic in a traditional way

Excellent tutorial. I'm looking to do the exact same thing for some 50+ year old forged hatchets.

Thank you! I really like that model of an axe mask! I'll ask my son to make one in leather! He loves lil projects like this!!
Leather would be great. It really is a simple and effective mask design. Thanks for commenting
Mark that was a very great way of making a sheif
Thank you James
Nice work Mark. You can also get small aluminum backing washers for your pop rivets. I used them while installing accessories onto my kayak.
Glad you enjoyed the video. I do have some of the washers and have used them on projects where there is a risk of the rivet being pulled out. I have thought of doing something similar on my kayak. Thanks for commenting
Mark Young I believe you also have a Tandy leather store in Halifax. We have one in Redmonton.
yes we do...on my list of places to go to..thanks

Interesting way of heating the PVC up. Thanks for commenting
I have the same axe brother! Cheap but gets the job done. Thanks for the knowledge.
Right on. They don't get the respect they deserve. Thanks for commenting
Great idea and nicely done Mark!

Looks like a great project to do, Mark.. Thank you for showing it to us.
Glad you enjoyed. Actually quite easy to do. Even if is for a temporary sheath. Thanks for commenting

Excellent! Going to make these for my aces and hatchets. Like yourself, I don’t have leather tools to make them out of leather 😊
Right on. They work great. The only issue is having to touch up the paint every so often. Thanks for commenting
Excellent mask, and probably safer really than the soft leather ones, great vid Mark
I think less likely for the axe to cut through and if it breaks...easy and cheap to make a new one. Thanks for commenting Randal
Great job, nice rivet hack

Can you do a complete cook set vid.

I agree Terry. I think it matches the concept of the Fiskars axes as well. Thanks for commenting
well done
Thank you
Very cool Mark! I’d been wondering how pvc sheaths were made! 😃👍
Glad you enjoyed. This is only one design possible with PVC. Thanks for commenting
Thanks
Most welcome
Very well made video but that material can't be bought anywhere near me. Home Depot says they can't even get it.
Glad you liked the video. Unfortunate Home Depot does not have it available. Thanks for commenting
pretty cool alternative to kydex, but come on mark, leather!! ;)

Great video Mark - I had no idea PVC was so malleable when heated. Do you notice any fumes?
Thanks Paul. Very little fumes as long as the material is not overheated. Still best to work with it in a ventilated area and wear a respirator.
You know it would of been easier
To put it in the vice and press it together
that is one of doing it for sure
Ecscuse me Norlund
Norlund is a nice axe
