    In the 4th and final episode of my northern snakehead miniseries, I'm back on the Potomac River with Haleigh Kilby and Jonathan Leavitt in search of a MONSTER snakehead. After fishing for them a week prior, cooking them up with Jon and then going on a research trip with a biologist for the state, we're working to put everything we've learned together to catch more of these fish. We'll also give our thoughts on the great snakehead debate and whether or not we believe these invasive predators are as detrimental to the waterway as people think.

    I’m 64 years old.
    When I was 20 years old I worked in a pet store, we sold snakeheads. No one ever thought this would happen.
    Catch them, kill them, cook them.
    The site “ catfish and carp” has a great recipe for them.
    I’ve always been an avid angler.
    You need to get some real fish Billy’s to put them down.

    Carry a small spray bottle of rubbing alcohol and spray it on the gills. They will die in a matter of seconds. It sends the alcohol straight to the heart. I learned this on a sailing trip in the Caribbean, when we caught a huge Wahoo trolling. The captain grabbed a bottle of vodka and poured it on the gills, worked like a charm. I now do this all the time on fish I don't release. Nice video!

    Great video as always bro. Greetings from Malaysia. We started to have Peacock Bass in Malaysia which they say is an invasive species and needs to be killed, which in my point of view is not true. They are great and fun to catch. Same goes to Northern Snakehead in your case. You inspired me in a lot of ways. Respect

    After watching your four show series I am less convinced that the Snakehead is a threat. Thank you very much for this. I will never be where I can fish them, but I love fish, seeing them, eating them, keeping them.
    Years ago when I lived in Northeast British Columbia, the folks there felt Northern Pike were a threat in one particular lake. I would find them thrown up in the bush or left to die in the sun. Myself and several others took it upon ourselves to change that thought in others.
    We fly fished them and changed to floating plastics and I wrote about it in the local paper. Over time it changed how people thought about Pike. Not my favorite eating fish but it was a great surface attack fish.
    So I hope with more education the Snakehead will become more appreciated.

    Never caught these, but some fish and crustaceans go into thermal shock and shut down immediately if put in an ice slurry. Ice slurry in a cooler bag in a hatch, dump them straight in from the net, and you're sorted.
    Worth a shot because these things look downright dangerous to handle with hooks and teeth going everywhere.

    When you club them in your net you stand a good chance of damaging your net. Buy a 90,000 volt stun gun (for about 20 bucks) and shock them in the net. Pull them out and finish the job with your club.

I hooked one and it jump immediately and spit the hook. I'm glad I got it on video. You should come to Maryland and fish for them. Someone just broke the record with a huge one at 19.9lbs. Just curious, what particular reason(s) makes you choose one or the other Kayaks in the situations you've been in recently? In the Pecos River episodes it was obviously due to shallow and rough waters so no pedal drive systems, but with the 2 different pedal drive systems what makes you use one over the other, since both can also be paddled?

    The snakehead (Channa or Parachanna sp.) is a non-native, air-breathing freshwater fish that is regarded by U.S. fisheries scientists as an invasive species, due to the fact that it can potentially threaten native species and native ecosystems, much the way non-native carp have disrupted native populations

    Awesome vids bud, I'm up in ontario and apparently we've got these in a few waterways up there and I'm really hoping to catch some and cook em up now.
    A general question about putting fish out of their misery: is it better to club em or stab em just behind the brain? Just picked up fishing again after fifteen years and I'm getting back into the swing of things.

    • @YakFishField
      @YakFishField  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s definitely better to insert a knife behind the brain. I was worried about these slippery buggers escaping my grasp and the knife finding my hand instead.

    Well these are in certain NA waters because of the aquarium hobby. Back before they were made illegal a lot of people got them because they are so angry and predatory that they can be fun to keep, but people got tired of them or couldn't house them properly so let them go.
    PLOT TWIST: Now that they are illegal they have a very high demand in small niche groups and therefore would fetch a very high price.

    • @YakFishField
      @YakFishField  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The VDGIF keeps one in a tank for research purposes. I bet they’re fun to observe. Steep penalties for being caught with one alive.

    • @kharnac3973
      @kharnac3973 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The first reported release of snakes heads was NOT from the aquarium hobby. It was from a food store selling live fish to eat. The customer couldn't bring himself to dispatch the snakeheads, so he released them. The aquarium hobby gets a bad rap all the time, but most of the biggest issues with invasive water species have been the result of aquaculture or DNR programs. Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS) is from the bait trade and possibly related to cargo ships dumping their ballast water into fresh waters. VHS is a big reason why you are not allowed to possess live fish from a body of water in many states. So, the point is please stop bashing the aquarium hobby, it is a minor player.

    • @kharnac3973
      @kharnac3973 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Liquid, either way my point is still valid. It wasn't the aquarium hobby.

    • @Saphire_Throated_Carpenter_Ant
      @Saphire_Throated_Carpenter_Ant 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure people eat these and maybe even use them medicinally like some rhino horn type of BS, but if you think that minority of instances accounts for the large numbers of the multiple species of channa in some of our waters then I don't know what to tell you other than that is a little bit far fetched, and you are going out of your way to stand up for a hobby at risk of making yourself appear gullible.
      People have been known to eat cats as well but the reason our nation's park system has a problem with feral cats is not because of some those were released into the wild, even though that likely has happened, it is from irresponsible owners. That is not me attacking cat owners in general any more than saying channa are in our waters from fish tanks is attacking the aquarium hobby in general, it is just stating facts...there are irresponsible people everywhere.
      And as far as attacking the aquarium hobby goes, I have been in the hobby for over 30 years. I have kept every single freshwater species of fish that Jeremy Wade has ever caught on River Monsters before River Monsters was even a thing. I was one of the founding members of Monsterfishkeepers.com and furthermore I owned a fish store for quite some time, Forever Wet Aquatic Pets. So if I have anything negative to say about the hobby, it is not from the outside looking in. I have about 2,000 of aquariums in my house right now, as a matter of fact.
      A major part of the reason I shut down the fish store was my disgust at the fact that for every responsible person in the hobby I ran into, there were 20 more behind them that had no business keeping anything living. People who know that "fish only get as big as the tank", an irresponsible practice called stunting. People who know that they cant properly house fish 'X' but hey "they will just get that 500 gallon tank somewhere down the road, for now a 10 gallon will do." People who know that fish 'X' will likely eat fish 'Y' but "hey if I keep them well fed it should be fine." People who's kids saw Finding Nemo but who did not have the funds, know how, or time to set up a salt water tank and so purchased clown fish to be put into salt water betta bowl setup. People who insist on keeping fish that are not being captive bred but they may or may not have even had the insight to check. Then it got to the point where I started refusing to sell to people who I knew were not capable of caring for the animal I was selling them, and that is a sticky road to travel that brings more drama than is worth putting up with. I still deal in fish and can to this day get anybody nearly anything in nearly any size, but only to responsible folk of my choosing, lest they end up in our water ways.
      Even some of the seemingly responsible folks in the hobby can't control their impulses to practice irresponsible fish keeping. Case in point: 'King of DIY' here on youtube has thousands and thousands of gallons of tanks, some between 1k and 2k gallons, but he still has no business buying a shark. much less several....yet he did. And he did so using another common line from the list used by the irresponsible hobbyist: "When they get too big I'm just going to donate it to a zoo." LIKE ALL ZOO'S ARE SOME SORT OF FISH RESCUE!? Wake up call to anybody in the hobby, zoos don't want your fish that may or may not even be able to ever reach maximum size and become an ideal adult specimen worth displaying depending on how it was raised. Very rarely is this an option....and by 'very rarely' I mean I have personally seen this one time in an instance where the person donating was related to an employee where the fish was being donated. For 99% of the other folks who find themselves in said position, their fish is going in a lake or river.

    Great series, exciting fish to find and catch. There are a lot of opinions out there on this species in NA, as a northern European I can see both sides of the argument but would need to see hard facts showing these fish are not affecting the natural species and environment before advocating. If studies show they are not a threat to native species, habitat, population numbers and environment, then why not let them be? Clearly they are contributing to the sport and by all accounts are good eating..I'm on the fence until they are proven to have no adverse impact.

    • @YakFishField
      @YakFishField  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, most people say Invasive = Catastrophic, but I don't think that's always the case. Most people don't realize that many game species we fish for are invasive, including largemouth bass (they've been stocked in countless bodies of water they don't belong in).
