Both "Bean" and "Mr. Bean's Holiday" were great movies. You can watch them a million times and still laugh at the same jokes, even if you know what's coming. That's something powerfull.
"Bean" got fairly poor reviews. "Mr. Bean's Holiday" got 2 of 5 stars from several reviewers on both sides of the Atlantic. I liked them, but hardly powerful.
Not a whole lot of people left in the comedy biz today who are both rich AND deserving of their success. Long before Bean came along, he was a comedic genius. No cheating or overnight success with him. Atkinson’s every inch a comedian, and god grant him even more. Success, Fame, AND Cars.
THE ultimate toilet joke! My boss is British, highly intelligent man and he tells us joke in exactly the same way as Rowan Atkinson said this one and staying SO serious whilst telling a joke is for me incredibly funny!
He was born in Durham in the North East of England, but has a standard RP accent, which he speaks naturally in all the time. Using RP suits some people, he must have lost any trace of a North East English accent by his 20s.

@@keithcroissant5640 yes because they will do it with self-deprecating charm and reserve themselves with unnecessary bad language which makes it funnier IMO

+Whiskey River (Doc) It's odd looking back and seeing Patrick Truman from Eastenders in both Mr Bean and Thin Blue Line, I guess they must know each other, or possibly utter coincidence.

He's so polite lol , I would've just said "he sat down and did a massive poo!" Lol. Rowan is always so polite and never really makes rude jokes other than in his t.v shows. It must just be the way he was bought up lol.
always painful , very nearly impossible to watch an educated englishman suffering through mind numbing questions from a late night american host with a questionable education
Rowan Atkinson isn't a naturally funny man. But he is a comic actor and would rightfully be expected to at least make an effort to amuse. Atkinson is too uncomfortable to even bother. Being educated doesn't mean you get a 'pass' to be dull. And most English people are thick. I'm English and I've observed that your average Yank is more intelligent than your average Brit. On 'TH-cam' they tend to have a better grasp of punctuation, for one thing. Their tabloids tend not to be mind numblingly crass, or stupid, unlike ours. Atkinson represents the tiny percentage whose parents could afford an expensive private school. So what? Doesn't make him entertaining. He's not.
aerialkate i dont think british people are thick! definitely. I prefer british movies, comedies, comedians, dramas.. they are more intelligent. one has to listen carefully to enjoy. American movies and music these days are trashy and junk..
jessie james Don't you remember the paedophile (English spelling, after the Greek) business a few years ago. A group of vigilantes were ready to tar and feather a woman whose address they'd found in the Yellow Pages: She was a paediatrician! You're right, a lot of American films are trash, but a lot of them are brilliant and innovative. British films always push that stiff upper lip stereotype. As though every Brit lives in a stately home and has impeccable manners. In my experience (as a working class Brit) the opposite is true. Except for me, of-course...

An interesting segment. Bubbling just below the surface is this sense that they both have a job to do, but they'd give anything just to talk cars all night.
+daveshen0880 the first series, as you have mentioned here, is just really dire. As an Englishman and massive fan of Rowan in most of his works, I implore anyone here who is directed to "check out" Blackadder - to fully skip the first series because it's wholly unfunny and downright weird and go straight to season 2, 3 and then 4 because they are the masterpieces.
+tinpot1978 I'm glad u & said this, I must have caught a few scenes of the 1st season b/c I thought it was really horrible, will have to check seasons 2 on, Rowan Atkinson is really quite a phenomenon, when I first saw Bean, I didn't quite appreciate it, as I grew older & went through diff things, I came to like it, now I'm absolutely love it, Rowan is very talented in his performances, partic of the Bean character & in his comedic stage performances. As a previous commentator said, he's already given us a substantial body of hilarious, very gifted work.
You're quite welcome and thank you for the reply. Watching season one is, naturally, the correct order to watch programmes normally so I only commented to help people avoid this trap. I really do wonder just how many people have been recommended to watch Blackadder and have been put off watching, what I can only describe as, "oddness" that is season one. Poor saps.
+tinpot1978 There are some masterpieces in the first series ! The Spanish interpreter with Jim Broadbent and Miriam Margoyles (many will know her as Prof Sprout in Harry Potter) as the Infanta is fantastic. Rowans character significantly changed for S2-4 and the writing changed due to Ben Elton coming on board and co-writing most of the subsequent episodes. Additionally the later series benefitted enormously from having the complete cast bending and shaping the dialogue at Rehearsal. There is a very good book by John Lloyd , the Producer that documents and explains quite a bit of background. Don't dismiss the first series out of hand. It has some good work and performances that need to be viewed again and again to start to understand some of the humour involved. The pageboy springs to mind . Additional episodes beyond the Four Series also exist. Things for Comic Relief and the like which also add to the genius work that is "Blackadder". Best Sitcom ever, anywhere.
