I honestly thought this show was much better than I expected based on the trailers. I feel like it accurately reflected a lot of my experiences growing up and living in the Salt Lake area. I am a similar age to the older women in the group (early 30's) but my parents left the church before I was born. I still have a lot of family that are active members. My parents raised me with very similar standards to the church but maybe like one step less restrictive (example: we don't want you to drink but if you are going to please do it here where we know you will be safe). So, I have always been too "Mormon" and goody good for non-mormons but since I was not a member I definitely experienced a lot of judgement from members. Which meant I didn't date much in high school and there were people who stopped talking to me when they found out I wasn't a member. It was always frustrating because there were plenty of members like these girls who were definitely more wild and living much further out of the standards than I did that were way more accepted than I was just because of the labels we had. Or the members who would still be my friends would try to convert me since I "acted like one anyway".

What an interesting perspective on life in Utah. I understand that you don't want to be a member since the doctrine is not true. Yet you relate to a lot of the values and lifestyle. Totally relate. Mormonism is so contradictory. Founded by a con man on a lie, but still contains great people with great intentions, trying to follow God.

I love catching up on all my fav ex-mo channels thoughts on the show. As someone who grew up never mormon just in Mesa Arizona so around the culture, and always interested in the history after so many friends growing up had tried to covert me, totally respect and understand your feelings and think they’re completely valid coming from someone who was taught to be the best Mormon you can be- I’ve always thought of it from the Lindsey Hansen Park direction where if you grew up with the doctrine, no matter where you land active/non-active/fundamental, you fall under the Mormon tree so the name didn’t even phase me but it’s nice to understand why it evoked so many feelings and I can only assume that the women of the show also feel that way or understand the feeling from many perspectives as well.

Just started the vid. I have to say a huge thank you to you both. I love your channel firstly. Secondly I’ve been so cringe about this new show I haven’t watched it, so happy you’ve reviewed it so I don’t have too. Currently I’m learning about the LDS church from missionary’s who have been visiting me for almost 5mths now. I live in Australia, and I’ve been on a journey for years now learning all I can about the Christian Faith and judaism. It’s been a wonderful experience to learn from missionaries, also this channel has been an excellent learning opportunity too. I still don’t know if I will be joining any church at this point, I’m just enjoying my learning. Again thank you for making this channel, you have no idea how much this person across the world has learned from you both.

It was fascinating! I'm so glad you guys are reacting. I've been following exmo world for years now (personally never-mo) and this was just wild. It sounds like many of these women had situations that resulted in them not being the most molly mormon followers during their young adulthood. Many were pregnant before marriage or have had affairs. It doesn't seem like they're the ones going to the bishop to confess everything. I mean, how is Conner being invited to the baby blessing as such an upstanding member compared to others in the group when he also cheated being on tinder? (Also, having followed these things, it's so interesting to see how Conner quickly talks about his "addiction" and you know that is how it immediately gets labeled when in reality it's a series of choices he made).
It just makes all the rules feel really arbitrary in a way that is impossible not to notice from the outside.
More than anything, the way many of them cling to the idea of the faith while skirting every possible rule is really fascinating to watch. Doing ketamine and laughing gas while saying WoW doesn't allow coffee is just a trip. I want to know desperately what their thoughts are on all the things nuanced or progmos take a different attitude about. What do they think about real and/or celestial polygamy? What do they think about women in the priesthood? What do they think about the different ways the WoW has been interpreted over time? What do they think about having to be called through the veil?

Sorry follow up question... If Taylor were to get excommunicated, that would cancel her sealing with her ex-husband, right? So then if she got back in and got married again, would she be able to get temple married without having to get a special permission to break the other sealing?

I don't know much about this topic but you might have heard of the practice of baptizing people after death in the LDS church, sometimes even people who had nothing to do with the LDS in life. The LDS have in the past (I don't know if they do this currently) given honorary baptism to famous Jewish figures, like Anne Franke. I am not sure if this is an attempt to appropriate her image or gain popularity by being associated with someone who is a significant figure historically. I am not sure but it could even be an attempt to attract Jewish people to the LDS. Some Jewish groups have said to the church, "Please stop."

I feel like there is a lot more moral judgement in LDS Utah, than in other states. Due to the fact that there are so many members of the church, it is a lot easier to make comparisons on how people are living the church standards. And I think that competition creates some backlash. Because of this, there are Utah LDS members that want to "act out", as an emotional defense mechanism to this critical judgement from others. Outside of Utah, I haven't seen this (although it might happen, it's not prominent). My experience outside of Utah, is that LDS members who go to church will try to keep the church standards. I haven't seen purposeful "rebellion."

When he talks about not understanding how someone can have a belief but not follow it the way at it’s taught, that is very much a point of view from someone who was indoctrinated. Millions and millions of people all over the world of many different religions believe in a base religion, but don’t follow every rule. And I think it’s a difference of believe in god and the basic ideas of a Christian based faith but not agreeing with the role that churches play in that culture. I think a lot of these people hold onto the church because they are scared of not being affiliated with the church. But in their heart and mind they believe their personal relationship with god is more important than the rules, I think probably at the end of the day they believe they can repent and ask god for forgiveness and that it is between them and god and not really think the church should have a say in that, but they also don’t want to lose their connection with the church for many reasons. Just my point of view as someone who’s non religious

Loved your analysis. I think one of the key things that separates the Mormon church from many Christian denominations and makes it a high-demand religion is the fact that “church is for sinners” really isn’t a common attitude within the LDS church. I’ve listened to probably a hundred Mormon Stories episodes, and I’m hard-pressed to think of any where members of the church broke the rules and were met with a “live and let live” attitude. Usually it’s “you’re not worthy”, lots of guilt and shame.

While I wasn’t raised Mormon, I was raised Roman Catholic, I can kind of see why people take a “one foot out one foot in” approach, I think there can be a distance people think of between the doctrine and the formal rules that comes with the process of leaving- like not admitting that they’re doing wrong because it might be an admission that they disagree with the doctrine

When I was a member of the mainstream Mormon church I used to think the FLDS members I’d see at Costco were so weird! But the longer I watch your channel the more I respect the FLDS for at least being honest about their doctrine, more so than the mainstream church. This stands out when it comes to women’s status. FLDS women know the belong to men( the Priesthood )although how many really like that is unclear. But wow mainstream Mormon women are so gaslighted about it! They are stuck on these weird pedestal where their second class status is justified by their being “ too spiritual “ for the world. Earlier this year one of the women in the general Relief Society presidency said that no other religion granted such broad power to women!!! Yes she said that with a straight face. The pushback from that was so bad they had to disable the comments from the post until they were called out for it.
Then the Relief Society President was found out to have gone to law school at a time when the church president at the time specifically told women not to work. There were so many women angered because they gave up their dreams to follow the prophet and here this woman that disobeyed has now been promoted to the highest calling a woman can have in the Mormon church. So a lot of hypocrisy and mixed messages there.

I think one of the reasons people sometimes see LDS as a cult is a lot of the stuff you discuss - shouldn’t confessing sins be about forgiveness and being supported through your repentance and not fear of excommunication? Shouldn’t loving God and having good morals be more important than how you dress or what you do on a Sunday? I think it’s interesting to see the cognitive dissonance people feel about their religion come out in their actions

I binged the show in 1 days. I enjoyed it lol. I have also watched multiple podcast with different women from the show & they stated that Hulu came up with the title, that they didn’t know that Mormon was going to be in the title. They also said that some are active, some have left, and some are not Mormon but they were raised in the community. Jessi said she had 1 Mormon parent & 1 wasn’t so she is/was never a Mormon. Mykala said her mom was a church leader in the CA Mormon branch & they aren’t as strict. She said she grew up getting cursed out by her mom. Lol. So those 2 are the 1s who don’t identify as Mormon. They also said that weren’t trying to represent Mormonism but more just showing their daily lives & they just happen to be /raised in the Mormon community. The show is mostly about momtok than religion.

With regard to Sam's musing about how to claim a faith and not live it to the letter, it is because certain religions encompasses more than faith. It is about identity and culture as well. I grew up attending RC church regularly and it is such a big part of who I am, how I was raised, how my values were formed, etc., that when I realized I had issues with aspects of the church and started to pull back, I found it was still a core part of my being. I identified with other Catholics because of so many shared experiences. I understood life from that lens so I felt socially and culturally Catholic, although I was struggling with certain beliefs. Unlike many Christian religions, there is no exploring different denominations, with Catholicism. At least when I was growing up, if you were born Catholic, you would die Catholic....lapsed or not. Only 20 years later have I gradually started thinking of myself as someone "raised Catholic" rather than a non-practicing or "not currently practicing" Catholic.

This sort of thing makes me wonder if, eventually, being "Mormon" might start to be similar to the way a lot of folks say they are Catholic. They might not have set foot in a Catholic church since grade school, but they still identify as Catholic. If you were your Seminary president and graduated from BYU, you might think of yourself as pretty danged Mormon, even if you have had your name removed or been excommunicated. Are we approaching that context as "TBM's" are increasingly less conspicuous by their dress, language, WOW choices, etc? By that standard, the wildest of the "Secret Lives" girls is just as Mormon as the Prophet.

But as the show went on, we found that a lot of the women connected so much of their lives to being raised in the church. In some ways, it seems, because they were raised in the church, they have gone extreme to prove a point against church policies.

Even though you are not currently LDS, there is nothing wrong with living by the good standards of the church. Some denominations evolve slower than others. I'm a 4th generation member of a Wesleyan Holiness denomination. I remember as a little kid, when the women of my grandparents' generation never wore makeup, never cut, colored or permed their hair, never wore jewelry or pants. Men wore only navy blue, black, grey, or tan suits, men were to wear white or pastel colored long sleeve shirts. Then comes my mother 😂. Though she believed in the same doctrine, she cut, colored and permed her hair and wore jewelry. On the 50th birthday, she got her ears pierced and bought her first pair of jeans. 😅 I am the 4th generation of the same denomination, and I'm grateful for the ones like Mom, who stopped believing in all of the legalism and taught me and my siblings it all about your personal relationship with Christ.

The Church is not becoming more progressive.
This is the crutches actual stance on piercings and tattoos.
"The First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve have declared that we discourage tattoos and also 'the piercing of the body for other than medical purposes. ' We do not, however, take any position 'on the minimal piercing of the ears by women for one pair of earrings'” (Ensign, Nov. 2000, 52)."

I’ve also seen some say that plastic surgery is typically done to replicate the appearance one had when younger (firmer skin, no wrinkles) and “healthier” (lower body fat, bigger boobs meaning pregnancy/breastfeeding and therefore in a fertile state) so plastic surgery is just maintaining and caring for your body because it is a temple. The mental gymnastics needed to justify those things are wild as an outsider looking in, but it also doesn’t surprise me that people will find a way to justify anything they want to do.

As I’ve said in other channels like this one as an ex-Catholic I’ve found the most similarities with ex-Mormons for some reason and the argument of who gets to be a Mormon reminded me of similar fights that happen in other denominations including the Catholic Church, at least until recently most American and European Catholics were known to just mostly ignoring what their own church said about things like birth control so the devout ones like I was really look down on them as “lukewarm” or “cafeteria” believers basically.
I’ve found that as an apostate I’ve had an advantage other groups like ex-Jehovah’s Witnesses may not have and that is I can just pretend to be a “lapsed” or cultural Catholic to most people including my own family mostly because I still heavily depend on my own parents for many reasons and I don’t want to rock the boat too much (although I’ve never feared being disowned as that never happened to my sister who did come out as an atheist years before I left). I’ve also heard in podcasts like Mormon Stories about “Mormon culture” and what exactly it is and since Catholicism really is a global religion there’s not one single Catholic culture but many instead, another reason why I may consider myself a cultural Catholic to some extend is that through Spanish colonialism Catholicism really is embedded in my Mexican cultural background and when I tried to eradicate all aspects of the religion in my life I realized I wouldn’t have much left and would have to give up beloved traditions like the posadas that happen near Christmas (and I’ve come to like that holiday more now than I ever did as a Christian) and this all despite that I now consider myself a somewhat anti-clerical atheist and want nothing to do with the church as an institution.
Since Mormonism a much younger faith in comparison my impression of a that “Mormon culture” is mostly embedded in Utah and a couple of other places and I wonder how a member in a place like Mexico or Peru sees the church or his Mormon identity compared to someone living in Ogden for example.

Would it be a case that the LDS think any publicity better than none? A lot of tgese Mormon Mom Vloggers seem to get away with shimmying by some of the rules? Is it the fact that they have lots of money? Seems a bit unfair that they get away with so much that so many were shamed for and felt so much guilt for in regular ordinary life. Looking at the Engish You Tuber and active LDS member Nemo the Norman he is currently facing excommunication for speaking truth and trying from within to make the church better. Seems like a lot of double standards everywhere. And where coffee is so sinful but opiate abuse isnt as bad? Oh dear! Thank ypu again for your lovely commentary as always fair and insightful. Non Mo. LDS church is NOT happy that this is out there. However, what can they do? These girls are definitely going to try and further their careers and seek fame. There is also a huge spectrum of what people do in their personal lives. My friend is married to a very notorious Mormon and the previous LDS prophet censured their activities, but it didn't deter their family from remaining fully active and Mormon, although being called out like that was shock. What Nemo is doing is VERY VERY different. It's going to be seen as leading people astray which is considered an excommunication worthy endeavor. -not too many people qualify to that standard! It's a hugely more intellectual serious business he is involved in.

From a never Mormon perspective, the glirls that are believing Mormons in this show seem superficial and remain part of the church for unexamined reasons. They most likely have never deeply studied the doctrine as Sam and Melissa have. It breaks my heart that the church brands people with the apostate label who are devoted church members just trying to better understand the doctrine. I think Sam and Melissa are awesome, and I do wish they and people like them could be celebrated by the church for their efforts and devotion!

I’ve always wondered this about all restoration denominations of Christianity, since it’s even in the New Testament that men and women should have their heads covered while in church. I'm Catholic but I refuse to follow or believe a few things and trust me, many Catholics do. Many of us are culturally living our religion but leaving out things we dont like. I am completely at peace with this. Completely. The church is run by men who dont even have families (at least in public 😅). I won't take absolutely everything men say, like that, seriously.

People have hormones. We are strictly taught to prepare for a temple marriage from a young age, but from 12+ it gets constant. (Temple marriage used to be quite a bit stricter too.) However, they have to grow the church within reality too. My cousin got pregnant at 15 and was "sealed" in the temple at a later date. I was a 24 year old virgin Mormon bride. Then 1st gen influencers who are about 35 and these who are a bit younger. We were counseled to share our faith online and that is why the huge success has been noted in the media by LDS. I get why it’s hard for you two to understand how someone can be a part of a religion and not be “all in,” but I think that’s actually how most people live, no matter the religion. They take and leave bits that don’t sit well with them, even if they hold on to the core beliefs. Many Catholics I know do not literally believe in transubstantiation, for example. I know Jews that don’t agree with circumcision, and Muslims that only follow dietary rules during religious holidays. Some will keep that secret, and others will rationalize bending/breaking rules however they see fit.
I personally don’t think it’s hypocritical when religions change over time. They wouldn’t exist without humans, and it’s simply a fact that human culture isn’t static. If they don’t adapt, they will either die out, or lead to extremist, insular sects.

I haven't watched this. I know some of what is expected as when I was in foster care as a kid one of the homes I was in was LDS. My granddaughters other set of grandparents are active members of the LDS Church and I stayed at their house for a month when our granddaughter was born. They would never cuss or dress inappropriately and they do wear their garments. They live the way I was taught when I was young and in the LDS foster home. But really gets mean is the people on TH-cam that says so much about being LDS and then their 8 and 9 year old girls have tons of makeup on they're wearing crop tops in short shorts and the father is supposed to be higher up in the church that he has to be there early. Just put a really bad light on the LDS Church I don't think that people should say that their LDS and this that and the other heavenly father and then they do all this stuff that is totally not in line with what the LDS teaches.
