I would say Messi never needed his pace to be effective. Messi way of dribbling, which is different than any other player I've seen, relies on his ability to react to body movements. He never needed pace or even space to be effective. He creates them by 2-3 touches which fools the defender while he cuts in the other direction. This skill comes down to 2 things, great intelligence/awareness + superb low body strength. His intelligence will always be there, but the low body strength is diminishing. Prime Messi dont need that extra space to beat Gvardiol, his thigh muscles are stronger than almost any player, and when he turns, it is physically impossible for the defender to follow because of his low center of gravity ie Boateng in 2015. Its crazy to have thought even with his age, he could still produce these type of moments to remind us how special he is.

If there was ever a debate (which there wasn't) Messi just put he nail in the cotffin with this World Cup performance. Messi is the playmaker, the dribbler, the pointman, facilitator, gives genius assists, breaks lines, and on top of everything is a goal scorer. He has been 90% of the attack and I'm glad he is doing it in the biggest stage in the planet for the entire world to see, even at 35.

That's exactly the point, people are just waiting for something like that and then take it as an argument that Messi is now better than Ronaldo. People need to switch off their black and white thinking and understand that there are people with different opinions and views. And we don't even need to go into much detail and say "but messi that and ronaldo that but messi won that and ronaldo won that" just shut up, they both have such different playing styles, different physiques, different attitudes in the game, different careers from the beginning to the end , different clubs , different images in the media from the arrogant Ronaldo to the shy, quiet Messi. So you can never compare them 1:1 but what you can say is that they both have dominated the game in their own way for the last 15-20 years. Some people seem like they are on a math test and have now figured out the perfect formula what the best result is (the best player) and now that Ronaldo has been eliminated from the World Cup and Messi is in the final they now think they have the perfect result as if that would have been the only point who is now the best footballer.

I hate the "proverbial rainy night in stoke" argument because it completely favors one type of player. To be fair, I think logically you would have to choose Ronaldo in that situation for his physical stature and ability to score goals in the air, etc. If you think about what attributes of player are negated by conditions, it would be touch, finesse, and precision with the football. If you were to rephrase that and ask "two perfect pitches, bring a player on to win you the game" it would clearly be Messi because what he can do with the football (assist and score) is unbelievable. Absolutely one of a kind. And I think ultimately that is a damning factor for this argument, you have to use conditions to give Ronaldo the advantage.

Most of the time he’s on the ball, he low key does some amazing things with the ball that we’re either used to because it’s Messi or just don’t notice if not watching closely.

However, if there is a TIE then the number of successful assists are also seen, in which case Messi has 3 assists with 5 goals and Mbappe has 2 assists with 5 goals .
If that too ties, then 3 additional parameters are used - "number of minutes played", "quality of goals" and "degree of difficulty " are looked at while scoring the goals as well as the "impact it had for the team".
If there is a TIE between for example Messi & Mbappe' Golden Boot should go to Mbappe' simply bcoz Mbappe played less minutes than Messi (Mbappe came as substitute for 1 match much later).

If you analyze the goals carefully, Mbappe's (5) and Alvarez's (4) goals were of highest quality, followed by Giroud and then Messi.

If Messi scores more than the other 3, he will win although 3 of his 5 goals have come from penalty kicks, but in case of TIE based on goals & assists, I think it would be unfair to give Messi Golden Boot in my opinion.

At some point, one was better than the other over last 15 years. Overall though, beyond just stats, I see it like this. CR7 is an elite goalscorer, has been very clutch over his career, and to me is the better goalscorer than Messi (proved it across multiple leagues). However, Messi is an elite goalscorer AND elite playmaker/chance creator. CR7 is nowhere near Messi in the playmaking/chance creation aspect of the game. Messi is the bow and arrow, CR7 is the arrow. That's how I see their careers, and it's why I rate Messi ahead of CR7

@@georgemcdougall7260 You have to contextualize statistics though, can't just read them off. CR7 has been an elite goalscorer in La Liga, EPL, Seria A, UCL, and for Portugal. Messi has been an elite goalscorer in La Liga, UCL, Argentina, and looking like Ligue 1 too this season. Arguably you can add world cup scoring for Messi too, which swings things somewhat, but I still rate CR7 slightly ahead in goalscoring because of UCL knockouts and the number of leagues.
