They are quite interesting and reflections of one another, The Living Daylights is strongest at the beginning and Licence to Kill is strongest at the ending. Also Licence to Kill has some amazing action scenes
Though I've been a long time Bond fan and Moonraker was the first Bond movie I ever saw in the cinema or movie theater, I did see "Sir" Timothy Dalton in person! In 1994-95 I used to work at Hollywood Center Studios and while walking the lot one late am I saw three people huddled outside of one of the soundstages: two women and one man. As I was passing them, I did a double-take and saw Timothy Dalton facing me and he noticed that I recognized him. He was smoking those long dark wrapped cigarettes, and he graciously acknowledged me with a gentlemen nod of the head. I was immediately star-struck, my one and only time that I ever came in contact with a real-life Bond actor celebrity!!
More interested in being an artist than a celebrity, Dalton has to be one of the best, yet underrated actors of our time. Still my favorite 007... Hope you also might have an interview with him for Licence To Kill as well. Thanks for sharing your amazing lifetime of work!
Always so genuine, interesting, articulate in an interview. Handles the American too direct/uncomfortable questions well. An entire life being drop dead gorgeous, causing lady-quakes wherever he goes, and responding in that ultra dreamy voice with level-headed matter of fact conversation. Just wow.

@@animfan98I think his stage career may have been more important to him. His best film performances (the great ones) are those that allow some more stagey acting, in my opinion. My favorites are Hawks & The King's Whore, but he was terrific in many films, especially costume dramas. He always seems completely natural in period costume. Great physical actor, too, believable every time. I meant to add, I don't agree that he's underrated or overlooked. I just don't think he ever set his sights on being a movie star. He's done some wonderful, odd work -- thinking of The Rocketeer, Brenda Starr, Flash Gordon -- he engages those cartoonish roles with seriousness and a sense of fun. I can think of no other actor of his calibre who could have done that.
@@DameAlysthat seems to be the problem that people have with him (that he ACTS it rather than enjoy it) but that was never a problem to me. Because I know that he was doing it more like an ACTOR and less like a STAR. I personally prefer that over what the franchise done.

Sadly, I stopped watching Bond after Licence To Kill - they went downhill FAST. The producers were twats anyway! Dalton was a classically-trained actor and was perfect in the role. Their loss. I no longer watch these films as they are total dross.

Having binge watched all the Bond films on my week off work recently, I still believe that Dalton was criminally underrated as Bond. Though he only did Living Daylights and Licence to Kill, both were ten times better than any of Roger Moore’s last 4 geriatric parodies. It’s such a shame he never did at least two more.
What's wrong with Roger Moore's Bond films. I recently watched A View To a Kill and thought it was really good. I even gave Moonraker a 10/10 which a lot of fans seem to hate. I didn't really see any issue with it. Maybe taking Bond into space was a little too much but it was handled brilliantly.
J.J. Moonraker was a cynical attempt at jumping on the Star Wars bandwagon. The novelised version where Bond tries to prevent a nuclear missile from being fired on London (not from space) would of suited Connery or Dalton, but Moore? No chance. And AVTAK was just the pinnacle of how long in the tooth Moore had become.
@@Fireglo I actually quite liked moonraker and for a period of time was one of my favourite bond movies. A view to a kill is not too bad , but average movie at best. Octupussy and fyeo are a lot better tho

Timothy Dalton needed to portray James Bond for more than 2 films! Pierce Brosnan always tried too hard and always came up short. Goldeneye belonged to Timothy Dalton!!!
Absolutely. Brosnan tried too hard and kind of irritated me. Dalton stuck to Flemming's vision of Bond and played it very well. He was intelligent and intense. Would of loved him to star in those darker Bond movies like For Your Eyes Only
I love Goldeneye the way it is, but the scene on the beach with Natalya falls flat with Brosnan, as he doesn't seem introspective enough for his "It's what keeps me alive" remark ; Dalton really would have delivered that line! Also, 006's "I might as well ask you if all the Vodka Martinis ever silence the screams of all the men you've killed" doesn't work with Brosnan as I don't get a sense that he (at least at that point) was really bothered by anything.
What a delightful, intelligent, thoughtful, talented man Timothy Dalton is. He's so respectful of the franchise and the interviewer. He treated Ian Fleming's work almost as he would Shakespeare. As to him playing Bond as a romantic though, I would argue that Connery seldom played Bond with any romance. Yes, Lazenby was the first to be properly romantic and fall in love as Bond, but Roger Moore truly cemented Bond as a romantic, lightly in Live and Let Die, more so in The Spy Who Loved Me, as a caring team with Melina, diligent chaperone for Bibi and a mature lover with Lisl in For Your Eyes Only, but also truly mature and passionate with Maud Adams in Octopussy. Roger's Bond also gelled well with Dr Holly Goodhead in Moonraker. They truly felt like couple material. This is all reflected in the theme songs 1977-1983 inclusive. Roger Moore doesn't get enough credit for that. Giving Bond a heart wasn't necessarily a bad thing.
Dalton being robbed of Bond so soon in his tenure reminds me of Conan O'Brien being robbed of the Tonight Show, maybe I have those backwards. Either way, both were great incarnations that weren't given the time to find their audiences that their predecessors and successors were.
As a side note, does anyone here recommend Centennial? I looked up some screen shots the other day and Dalton clearly plays a much older person than he was at the time ; he was only about 32/33 when he filmed the series, but he looks made up to look like his character was well into his 50's or even 60's.
He should have taken over from Roger earlier, atleast by A view to a kill, roger was too old by then and it would have made the movie alot better, for your eyes only would be perfect for dalton too but i think octopussy suited Roger.
The only thing I can't picture with Dalton being in AVtaK is the "St. John Smythe" scenes at Chantilly. Those scenes are broadly played in a way that only Roger Moore could get away with.

Yes, he is the most romantic James Bond, even more significantly, he is the very best Mr Rochester in Jane Eyre 1983.
He was ruthless, not romantic. He was the closest to Fleming's version and Fleming's Bond certainly wasn't romantic.

As to him playing Bond as a romantic though, I would argue that Connery seldom played Bond with any romance. Yes, Lazenby was the first to be properly romantic and fall in love as Bond, but Roger Moore truly cemented Bond as a romantic, lightly in Live and Let Die, more so in The Spy Who Loved Me, as a caring team with Melina, diligent chaperone for Bibi and a mature lover with Lisl in For Your Eyes Only, but also truly mature and passionate with Maud Adams in Octopussy. Roger's Bond also gelled well with Dr Holly Goodhead in Moonraker. They truly felt like couple material. This is all reflected in the theme songs 1977-1983 inclusive. Roger Moore doesn't get enough credit for that. Giving Bond a heart wasn't necessarily a bad thing.
Bond had always been a tender and vulnerable romantic at heart (sure he’s a bit cold and harsh and flawed but he’s a good man)

Dalton being robbed of Bond so soon in his tenure reminds me of Conan O'Brien being robbed of the Tonight Show, maybe I have those backwards. Either way, both were great incarnations that weren't given the time to find their audiences that their predecessors and successors were.
I believe he did most of the he stunts like hanging on the top of a Landover in living daylights
As a side note, does anyone here recommend Centennial? I looked up some screen shots the other day and Dalton clearly plays a much older person than he was at the time ; he was only about 32/33 when he filmed the series, but he looks made up to look like his character was well into his 50's or even 60's.

He should have taken over from Roger earlier, atleast by A view to a kill, roger was too old by then and it would have made the movie alot better, for your eyes only would be perfect for dalton too but i think octopussy suited Roger.
The only thing I can't picture with Dalton being in AVtaK is the "St. John Smythe" scenes at Chantilly. Those scenes are broadly played in a way that only Roger Moore could get away with.

I’d argue that Dalton is more personable and charming than Brosnan. Brosnan looks super suave, but he’s so wooden without a script.
