What I did was I found a high quality 1/4 inch thick cutting board, cut that up how I needed and epoxied it down. So far it works great. When it wears down I will have to figure out a good way to remove the rest of the board to replace it, but for now no worries. I will probably just throw the things in a camp fire to melt the rest of the cutting board off and tap some screws in. The wood rack is actually super beast for the 150$ in materials. I have used stuff from titan and rep and the wood one I built is twice as stable as any of their more affordable racks, and it isn't even secured to the platform. I was doing 450lb rack pulls the other day and it barely had any movement where just racking my warm up weight (250) for squat on the rep fitness one my buddy has made the whole thing move a fair bit, especially laterally . If you need a rack and are somewhat handy DO NOT HESITATE to build one as I was sceptical of it's capabilities at first, but it ended up working really well. The best design I have seen is off the "Buff Dudes" page and is what I took inspiration from. Just be careful and go slow when drilling the holes. The one problem with mine is some of the holes are slanted so I had to file/shim them to make the cups completely level with each other.
You already know this, but pose the question in the video of "Why do companies continue to make j-hooks with exposed metal like this?" For those that don't know, it's because it's the cheapest/easiest to produce that way and also gives incentive to upgrade to the higher-end and more expensive sandwich j-cup style.
Coop, send me the measurements where the holes are on the jcup. I can alter the 3-D file. Also, parts can be printed In nylons, nylon alloys, polycarbonate (bullet proof glass). I have printed very strong and durable parts with these filaments.
I guess I am the exception to the norm...I typically push against the rack to set the bar into my back for squat. I haven’t had too much metal to metal contact with standard J cups, but good idea for those that are.
Great video. There are a couple of companies that make stock j-cups right. Gary Jones and the Troops designed j-cups for Hammer Strength racks with hdlp inserts on all surfaces. They weigh 20 lb each. I brought a Hammer Strength used from Concordia U. It's crazy but I made the purchase based on how great doing pull-ups felt, absolutely no wiggle in the rack and fantastic knurling on all three pull-up positions.
Great Idea, I'll be making these tonight. I have a couple different plastic types I'll experiment with for durability. I'm thinking PETG will work better than standard PLA used in printing. Nylon would also be a great option, far tougher just more of a pain to print.
I feel that PETG or even ABS would be better than PLA. I figure that the PLA is more likely to crack if you are aggressive with racking the bar. Nylon might be better but I have seen the nylon on my roller cups wear down pretty fast using a bar with a very moderate knurling.
I'd like to go back in time and show this video to Arnold or Bill Kazmiaer in their prime. I could only imagine the look on their face when I told them there were guys who laid awake at night worried about metal to metal contact in the gym. Bro, muh nurl!
I have the same thought sometimes watching these videos. My home gym is pretty vast, and mostly old school racks. My dad decided to buy some of the UH plastic and glued it onto every important surface.
The 3-D printed plastic cover looks great but I ran into the same thing and cut out a 1"x3" section of adhesive felt furniture pad and put that in place and so far so good. About the only "worry" is stripping off the paint on the J cup if I ever have to remove/replace the pad but the paint was already getting stripped off by my knurling so that wouldn't be any worse. FWIW, the pad I used is called X-PROTECTOR.
Reps PR 5000 standard J-Cups don’t even have UHMW where the bar sits. They use some cheaper rubber that is held by a single screw in the center causing them to spin in the J-Cup. These are the details that Rouge doesn’t overlook or value-engineer.
Was just trying to find a good j cup to protect my mammoth bar. Good job in getting companies to man up. Good 2x 3 sandwich cups are hard to get. And rep fitness, who I like, are back ordered till end of February. Bad business preparation. Cups are as important to the bar as it is to a catcher in baseball.
I've had a squat rack with plastic on the 'tab' of the j-cups. The biggest thing I've noticed, and this is why I actually TOOK THE PLASTIC OFF, is that most J-cups with that plastic lip make the cup too 'flat' for safety purposes. When I've had lighter (60 kg or less) loads on the bar, I've nearly rolled the bar right out of the cup (reaction time, baby!). Thank god it was for doing bench presses and my hands were already mostly locked on the bar, and it was light weight. Taking that tab off the front of the J-cup and leaving just the metal increased my lip enough that when I rolled it back for heavy squats, etc, it felt STABLE. So for a 3 way coated J-cup, the biggest adaptation would have to be increasing the actual size of the lip itself, and giving it a more vertical end to work with. Basically, it would take a redesigned J-cup to do so.
That’s not ok. Contact surface on Rogue J-cups are actually inclined towards the rack, so barbell tends to roll to the safest position. Other companies might have done this wrong
I put old wrist wraps on the pins so the knurling of the bar doesn't wear out. It's not ideal but for my garage gym it's enough. Also, i have a powerlifting bar which doesn't have knurling at the end, so its perfect for home use. Not everybody needs to grip the bar extra wide.
buy longer screws and put the uhmw plate back on top of the 3d print. then you will protect the 3d print. Also you could modify the 3d print to make the flat part skinner where the uhmw goes. Or just buy a sheet of uhmw and cut a piece the full length of the j cup. if you heat the uhmw you should be able to bend it to the j cup lip profile. heat it and clamp it to the J cup then cool it in water while clamped. may have to put the umhw in an oven for a bit to get it soft. just drill some holes and attach like the original.
Most of them are great, but the roller universals don't have anything to prevent metal to metal contact at the lip of the roller jcups, but I'm sure they will work on this for future revisions.
Just realized my ethos power rack 1.0 has plastic on the back, bottom and on the hook. I got this rack about 2 months ago so. About to order another set I found on amazon, different brand but they fit 3x3 post and have the same design. Very expensive however(100$) but it's the only set like them.
I used gaffers tape followed by gorilla tape to wrap my J cups. It should last at least a year or two. When the tapes gets too knarley, it’s easy enough rip off and to replace

You can get that printed out of Nylon or Nylon-X, which is a carbon fiber filled Nylon...that should be a lot tougher and last a lot longer...more expensive though. The other issue, if the part is not printed solid, with any sort of percent infill less than 100%, the force of the weight acting on the pact could split the layers.
@@seanpuffer8436 Sure, depending on how you orient the layers relative to the force, the layer height, your top/bottom/perimeter layers...but the bar is applying a point load (round load element onto a flat surface), and when you re-rack the bar, you also apply an impact force, which could shatter the plastic. UHMW is a type of Polyethylene, that's rather tough and also soft enough to take impacts. 3D printer parts also become brittle over time depending on conditions of use....all things to be considered 🤓
It’s amazing how clean that worn down part is . I’m thinking it would take a long time for steel to ware down like that so I would imagine it would be dirty and have a bit of rust on it , yet it looked fresh like you had just done with a grinder or sumet.
How did you contact thingiverse.com? I've searched to find a way to contact and have struck out, tried to register and couldn't get the verification email to come through, would love to try these but can't figure out how to do so
I just don't have this problem. The only time I roll the bar forward is for bench and OHP, but I don't grind it into the j-cup. Seems like a bad habit to me that is unnecessary. I push the bar into the back of the j-cup for squats so I can pin it to my back. Nice idea, but I wouldn't pay money for it.
When squatting, i don't think this product would make a difference for me. I push the bar against the rack. However for bench they would need to put a groove by the lip so the bar could settle in. Imagine if you took away the groove normally created by the end of the standard plastic and the metal lip, without that your bar keeps rolling back and forth and isn't locked in. Yes, you could just spin the bar a few times against the new plastic but i see this as a potential failure in design.
Lol kinda clickbaity, or maybe just wishful thinking on my part. I was hoping the WHOLE j-hook was made out of plastic and you were going to test the strength of it by adding weight to it till it breaks LOL
Wonder how much will it cost. Cause $125 dollars sandwich j-cups eliminate this issue, and it's only $45 above the cost of standard J-cups. I don't think these plastic cups would cost less than $45 if made by rogue.
This makes me feel like I'm not using my 3d printer (which is actually in my basement gym) to its full potential ha. Which its current use is collecting dust. Luckily my J hook has UHMW on the hook.
You really don't even need anything 3D printed for this. Find some UHMW plastic sheeting online and some glue that'll work between metal and plastic like loctite or whatever. The reason most companies aren't making these is they would want to bolt them to the j-hook and putting a bolt on the portion might compromise the strength of the j-hook. At home though, or in a gym? Yeah, just glue a piece of plastic on that bad boy. (Ultra super cheap and ghetto hack: Buy a roll of Dollar Tree medical tape and wrap the end of your hook. If it shreds too fast go buy another roll for one whole dollar.)
Why has this not been put onto the rogue store yet. This has annoyed me ever since I got my rack 6 years ago.. rogue fitness, stop fucking around and make this product happen
You seem like you have some sort of inside knowledge and a relationship with Rogue.... thought solely based on the fact that you've had a behind the scenes tour of their facility in the past. I was just on their website looking at some stuff and came across their "Rogue Shrimp Trawler" attachment.... pretty much an extension arm to attach to your rack uprights that expand the wingspan of the rack. It's sole purpose it to dangle rings from and do crossfit-y things. As you can tell from that description.... I'm not a crossfit kind of guy. I love and cherish my joints. Anyways, looking at that attachment and the description on their website where it says "extends the wingspan of your rack...." it got me thinking of the ForceUSA rack.... which has another, CRUCIAL attachment that also "extends the wingspan of their rack." That of course is the cable crossover/functional trainer tower attachments. I was wondering if you know or have heard about if Rogue ever plans on making such an attachment? ForceUSA as stated has said attachment.... pretty sure I've seen Valor Fitness having the same attachment as well. It's no secret Rogue is a copycat company and I am hoping they too plan on eventually coming out with their own. Not to poke fun at Rogue for not coming out with original stuff, the industry as a whole copies each other, I just like to keep Rogue and their fanboys in check..... I feel like a lot of them think that whenever Rogue comes out with something new it's "cutting edge" when in reality usually it's just their take on another company's equipment/attachment that has existed for a while already. When I bought my Rogue rack I was torn... TORN between the RML-490 and the ForceUSA MyRack..... which you can customize the fuck out of..... making the customization of Rogue look like child's play. ForceUSA just seems to have maybe not a wider selection of attachments for their racks.... but more useful..... and affordable attachments for their racks. I just went with Rogue because I'm a lowly human being who has "gone with the crowd" haha. That and I heard nothing but excellent things about their customer service, and in my dealings with them - their CS has lived up to the gushing compliments. That and the fact their shipping times are damn near identical to Amazon's for me, which is incredible for a fitness equipment company. If I order something on Monday it'll likely be at my house on Wednesday the same week..... like 2 days..... 3 days would be a "long time." I do live in central Illinois though, only about 6.5 hours away from their headquarters so that likely has something to do with it. But rambling cut short here. Have you heard anything about them developing or at least thinking about making cable crossover/functional trainer tower attachments for their racks? I'm currently looking at crossover/functional trainers to add to my garage. Between free weights and one of those my garage gym, IMO would be the most well rounded gym I've not only owned but probably ever been too. Even when I went to gyms WAAAAAAY back in the day I'd say about 80% of the equipment/machines there were useless to me so I've never used them. I've always been of the mindset all you need to have a great, all around workout is a rack, barbell, and some free weights. Dumbbells are a nice accessory to have to supplement that, and the only gym machine I've used and truly thought was a major asset was the cable crossover machine. If I could have one of those in my Garage...... I'll likely never leave my house again, haha. As for other crap I'm looking at is a GHD or Reverse hyper...... I've never used nor have I seen one in person. Back when I went to commercial gyms, over a decade ago, powerlifting and DEFINITELY crossfit were not nearly as popular as they are today. Seems like those two pieces of equipment have only become "standard" or at least highly desired pieces of equipment with the rise in popularity in both power lifting... and crossfit. I'm not going to think about purchasing one or the other until I actually find and go to a gym that has one and use it first. I can't help but look at them when I hawk Rogue's website though... which is frequently. Just looking at them though it looks to me like the GHD would be more versatile as the Reverse hyper is pretty much limited to being.... a reverse hyper. The GHD can not only accomplish GHRs but also flat hyperextensions..... which to me do the same thing as a reverse hyper... no? But also you can do situps on them as well.... even though I'm not much of a situp guy.... or pretty much any dedicated ab work guy. I'm of the class of people who believe ab development just comes with working out every other part of your body with free weights due to the amount of focused bracing you have to do with damn near every barbell lift. Meaning..... you engage your abs already on pretty much every exercise you do, so do you really need to do ab specific workouts..... like situps? IMO.... no.... you don't. BUT if I were to get a GHD it would be mainly for the hyperextensions and GHRs you can do on it. I MIGHT do situps on it once in a blue moon, but that's not really a selling point for me. Besides, there are COUNTLESS articles and videos out there that over the past 5 or so years that have come out poo pooing on situps in general.... in any form... on how they're shit for your back and tend to develop tight hip flexors more than they develop tight abs. So my natural turn off to the exercise has at least some sort of following behind it which just reenforces my disinterest in the exercise. I digress (and ramble like a motherfucker... god damn). But seriously..... cable crossover attachments for rogue racks.... do you know if they're planning something like that? I don't want to drop $1,500-2,000 for a dedicated functional trainer or cable crossover just to see Rogue in 1-3 years release an attachment that accomplishes the same thing.
After I've posted my long as comment/question not really related to the video.... I watched the video. Excellent video. Makes sense. That said, as an owner of both a pair of standard Rogue J-Cups and their Sandwich variety for a Monster Lite rack, I wouldn't even say the Sandwich variety is all that useful. Well, not useful if you also have safety straps. NOT because of lack of UHMW protection, but because of the shape of the Sandwich J-cup. I can only speak about Rogue and their sandwich cups because that's what I have, not sure if this is a universal issue across other companies like Sorinex, Legend, etc. I assume it would be an issue for Titan if they make Sandwich J Cups because, well...... Titan is a rip off brand of Rogue and their products are legitimate carbon knockoff copies of Rogue products. THE PROBLEM WITH ROGUE SANDWICH J-CUPS (I really got to stop rambling, haha) is the LENGTH of the J-cup, vertically, when mounted on the rack. Again, this is if you also have the safety straps. I ordered my Rogue collection of shit (I love it, just being flippant here) during their last Black Friday sale a few months ago. I asked them to swap out the standard safety pin and pipe with the straps, and the standard J-Cups with the Sandwich variety... for the reasons you state in this video. Upon completion of assembly when it arrived I immediately wanted to do some bench pressing.... because I'm a "bro" haha. So I set the J-cups where they need to be (chalk marked the holes for future reference) and then went to setup the safety straps to the required height. I couldn't. The sandwich J-cup extends so far down the upright you have to put the strap too low, because on the strap safeties, the metal on them extends UP the uprights. Meaning even if you get the J-cup and strap safety as close together as possible..... the strap will be too low. Maybe I just have a weird anatomy and have irregularly short arms (which I don't.... For my height I actually have long arms.... or maybe I just have short legs..... which I do.... I have a 6'4" wingspan but am only 5'10" tall on a good day, haha. I'm all upper body with squat legs. I can touch my toes sitting with my legs extended with my back perpendicular to the ground, yeah... ANYWAYS). So the problem with the Sandwich J-cups and Strap combo is.... you can't set the safeties up with those J-cups properly.... for bench. Natural reaction would be just to raise the other end higher.... well, think about it. You'd be creating a slope downward.... toward your head.... the exact wrong place you want your bar to slide down and crush you...... on your head... or throat. So I had to order a second pair of J-cups.... the standard ones, to use with my straps in order to do bench.... safely. Now if you have the pin-pipe safeties..... the Sandwich J-cups will be fine seeing as the real estate those take up on the uprights is literally just the hole you insert the pin through. So that's my LONG take on the Sandwich J-cups from Rogue paired with their Safety Straps. I really wanted to use the sandwich J-cups for bench press for the reasons stated in this video, but instead I have them mounted on the other side of the rack setup to use only for squats. An exercise that really doesn't require that level of UHMW protection because on squat you're just walking under the bar, setting it at the proper spot on your traps/upper back and lifting straight up and off the cups. No real spinning of the bar, or rolling the bar to the edge of the cups. Oh well. You live and learn. I just now have 4 J-cups meaning I never have to move them, seeing as the only exercises I do in the rack that require them are the bench press and squat. I'm sure that might change if I decide to do some other work in there, but I focus on powerlifting so I'll ALWAYS be doing flat bench press and squats in that rack. Whenever I do incline/decline presses it's usually with dumbbells and I do those outside the rack. If I wanted to do barbell shoulder presses I wouldn't have to change anything because I'd use the same J-cup positioning as I use for Squat...... so yeah. I have 4 J-cups for almost no reason as a result of this faux pas. I just never heard of people having this issue and I didn't look close enough to the construction of the straps and sandwich J-cups before buying. I mean who would've though of that issue? But if you look at the pics you can see what I mean. The straps have metal plates that extend UP the uprights when installed.... here's a pic of that www.roguefitness.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/rogue_header_2015/472321edac810f9b2465a359d8cdc0b5/m/o/monster-lite-strap-safety-h_4.jpg. The Sandwich J-cups extend way lower DOWN the uprights than the standard ones. Here's a pic of that. www.roguefitness.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/1500x1500/472321edac810f9b2465a359d8cdc0b5/m/o/monster-lite-jcup-sandwich-comparison_1.jpg Combine those two issues and you can't set the safeties properly to safely do bench press because you have to set the straps so low to accommodate the extra metal on both products.
Can't wait to see Rogue come out with $50 J-cup caps!

Haha definitely would have trouble trusting that.
Wonder how much will it cost. Cause $125 dollars sandwich j-cups eliminate this issue, and it's only $45 above the cost of standard J-cups. I don't think these plastic cups would cost less than $45 if made by rogue.
Pavel Petukhov E these would be like under $5 to print with a decent plastic.
@@seanpuffer8436 that's how much it will cost to Rogue to do it. And they will sell it to people for at least $50
That I could see. Decent profit margin on their end
This makes me feel like I'm not using my 3d printer (which is actually in my basement gym) to its full potential ha. Which its current use is collecting dust.
Luckily my J hook has UHMW on the hook.
Todd Anderson same lol
Xmark j hooks have rubber an all parts of the hook
coop make some pairs so those of us without a 3d printer can get some, bro!?
We need more TSP videos :)
what terf is in your gym?
360p crew reporting in.
Such a great idea!!!
dude they just want you to buy the sandwich cups because they cost more
You really don't even need anything 3D printed for this.
Contact cement. It bonds UHMW to steel. That's what I did. It will probably stay on forever.
Why has this not been put onto the rogue store yet. This has annoyed me ever since I got my rack 6 years ago.. rogue fitness, stop fucking around and make this product happen
first time seeing you without a mustache.... F**king weird
Wouldn't it be easier to wrap the end of the j cup with electrical tape
Wouldn't last long and would get the bar sticky
4 years later and Rogue is still doing this. They can't sell sandwich jcups if they fix these! $$$
Simple. Don't buy them. Vote with your wallet.
Hey Coop I sent an email through your website and would really like some help making some equipment decisions. Great channel!
The guy should use Delrin
Why don’t you just wrap the lip with tape instead. Cheap/easy and repeat as needed
My gym, My rules. I mostly train alone and don't let that happen but wish Rogue wrapped the metal too, but I bet they would get their pound of flesh.
Duct tape for me. If I had 3D printer I'd give this a shot.
Are you the Fed retirement channel guy?
Notification squad!!!
Just dip your j-cup into liquid rubber.
Truck bed liner would probably be more durable.
Good idea!.............. Why didn't I think of that!
Gorilla tape?
Y’all got any diy ideas?
Here's a pic of that. www.roguefitness.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/1500x1500/472321edac810f9b2465a359d8cdc0b5/m/o/monster-lite-jcup-sandwich-comparison_1.jpg
Combine those two issues and you can't set the safeties properly to safely do bench press because you have to set the straps so low to accommodate the extra metal on both products.
I don't have a 3D printer though 😢
Sandwich J Cups
sup.
Suh dude
That’s why you buy Sandwich J cups from rogue. It’s not that much more for the upgrade.
As of yet they aren't making them for my Infinity 2x3 uprights. I'd by them in a heartbeat if they were available.
So... no mustache?
