I just started hunting mid December of last year so I had never got to experience the rut. I was eager to get in the woods this season and started hunting October 1st opening day here in Indiana. Didn’t see much for 4 weeks. Then the day before yesterday I was watching this video and decided to go out there yesterday morning to do an all day sit. I just made it to my tree stand and tied my bow to the string. And the 2 big bucks I was after came charging in over a hill chasing a new buck I’ve never seen right to me. I was in shock cause they were 50 yards from me closing in fast. Blowing, snort weezing, grunting, and everything! They chased a good solid 4 year old 8 pointer to me and he stopped 10 yards right in front of me broadside to catch his breath and with my bow still on the string I sent one in his heart, and he dropped 40 yards away. What an experience!
That's awesome! Welcome to the rut! I had a similar experience last year watching an old mountain buck chase down a smaller 2 year old until it just laid down on its side in submission as the old buck roared and tore up some saplings. I ended up killing a different buck about 20 minutes after that. This is the best few weeks of the year! Congratulations!
Reaching out from NB, Canada, this is my 2nd season of deer hunting & I’ve absolutely fallen in love with this sport. I’m eager to learn as much as I can & these tips are phenomenal information for a newbie like me. I wish I opened this video 3 weeks ago at the start but I’m going into my last week of deer season here in New Brunswick with so much more knowledge from you guys. Thank you!
Great stuff for us Michigan hunters. Thx! I agree completely with your grunt comments. Also I agree with your stand strategies as well. This week is my favorite. We call it "magic week" as the bucks start cruising heavily this week. Chances are best when they are seeking early estrous does. Glad I found your post. Hunt safe and hard!
Great video! There is nothing better than putting hours in the woods! There is something magical about the rut. I have never amshot any monsters but respectable deer! Patience is key, and yes less is more! Keep up the good work and good luck this year!
I'm in Iowa and just relocated ladder stand today to a funnel along a creek and corn field. Im nervous about the late season move but I've been watching deer use it from the distance.
Very good video brother! Commonsense advice from a veteran hunter. I learned a couple of things. Location: Upstate South Carolina on the edge of the Blue Ridge mountains. Yes, we do get big bucks in S.C., lol. Not the mid-West size, but big. Halloween hunt, here I come!
I find it so difficult to do an all day sit as I’m such an active person but I’m going to give it a shot this Friday after the cold front. Thanks for great content & good luck 🍀🦌
Can help on a scrapes but sometimes I feel they do more harm then help . I notice does tend to be very sensitive to them and when a bucks chasing a doe and she hits a scent of some sort it could deter her and there goes ur buck also
I listen to audiobooks or podcasts so my mind is active and I can sit still without that need to move around. Also, a ground blind might help you out a lot, or climb higher
@@kimberlylevin2191 im central Indiana so our hunting prob isn't much different. I normally don't start doing mid day sits until nov 8th or so until around thanksgiving
Halloween week is the time here in the Catskills. It is always the same time of year as the local wildlife biologist said. This is why opening day rifle season is always set the week of Thanksgiving so the Bucks have bred the doe.
I am S. New Jersey and I am off of work from Nov 1st to the 6th. I just started seeing daylight pics of small bucks last couple days and I hope in the time I am off the big boys will come through. I have a nice 8pt with a messed up rack with character and I am looking for him. He has been regular every few days. Had other nice bucks earlier in season but haven't seen them on camera in a few weeks but that can change.
Central/eastern VA, bucks chasing early this year. I wish they would wait for my vacation time next week! Agree with all of your advice. I like to use soft grunts while walking to and from my stand. I have killed bucks following me out.
My experience is 13:31 calling does get the attention of aggressive young deer. As I am righting you confirmed the same. I did kill a 2.5 too 3 year old buck a couple of years ago that was broken off and he had a small drop tine. He was not the mature deer that I wanted but the way he came running in and that little drop tine was irresistible. Well that and it was the last day of the season.
From what I can see on my cameras the bucks are all moving late evening(past shooting light) and very very early morning(1-2am) each picture I seem like there is a doe with em but never in same frame always a few mins ahead of my bucks. Whats your suggestion. I have 2 stands and a blind up right now blind is looking right into their bedding between bedding and food source(cut corn field) 1 stand is looking down a slight ridge into a known bedding area and other stand is facing a v in the trail next to a hay field(getting a lot of pictures outta this stand but also have a urine dripper VERY close to this stand but not right on me maybe 60 yards away.
In NJ here, Just saw a gigantic buck in the daylight just standing there seemingly stunned and distracted. It made for a great conversation with my daughter on the way to school about the rut and how the boys are affected by the girls. Hold on boys for another week, we will have a sit down and have a one on one conversation in the woods
Every property sets up differently with how deer use it and how it relates to the neighborhood, but on a smaller property you really need to be careful with over pressuring. Find a solid travel route or two, develop 2-3 solid stand locations by enhancing those trails, adding mock scrapes, water holes then hang a camera. Wait until you either have a buck patterned or move in during late October. Again each one is different and the only way to know for sure would be to scout it.
love the content man my wife just shot her first deer sunday night a nice 10 point i was hoping she would get a 8 point ive been hunting for 2 years now hoping i can use some tips for this rut kicking off to get him
Never too many. I hunt 40 acres and have 6 tree stands and 4 box blinds. It's great for flexibility due to changing weather conditions. Valley stand when it's really windy, box blind if it's more than a light rain, etc. Also, it keeps you from over-hunting one particular stand.
Yes and No. You don't want a stand every 20 yards (ive seen that) but you do want enough to cover the 50 acres with different winds. You could have 15-20 stands on 50 acres of cover if you like a lot of stands. every property is different..
What if you only have a field to hunt and can’t get into woods? My stand is on the edge of a field with some thick woods at the back but I’m not aloud in them but there a lot of doe that come out into the field to eat the corn any tips?
Using a phone did cost me a nice deer the past season. It wasn’t totally my fault, as that’s the only mean of communication between me, and my hunting partner who was late to come in that day. So he said he would be there in about an hour. After 1,1/2 hour, I got a text from he that he arrived. It wasn’t necessary for him to send me that 2nd text as I knew he would be coming. Make it short, as I was answering his text, a nice sized deer was already in front of me guessing was pushed by him coming in. By the time I grabbed the gun, it busted me and took off. Although I didn’t have to answer him right away, but he’s an elderly friend with health issues. My phone is always on vibrate, except I did an emergency bypass for his number in case he needs me. I don’t regret answering him, but that’s what happens when I’m not paying attention to surrounding. --> on sitting all day, I have done it and you’re right on food and drinks. I double pack everything just in case. Good points made here in this video 👍
Love them. I've brought lots of bucks in with estrous. My last buck is killed came in and scent checked 4 does that were in front of me and walked over and put his nose on the scent I put on the ground. Freezer for him!
I use tinks doe n rut from the 16th to the 20th of November one yr I had 2 come into it on a string! One was 11/16 the other was 11/18 post rut they are searching for the last hot doe for the season!
I think scents work. I've had bucks come right into the scent in the past. Now in Michigan most of that is illegal so I dont use it anymore. But I do think it works.
Here in Ohio I saw one nice buck come by around 4:30 but that was a week ago, since then only a few does, tons of scrapes though hopefully this weekend we get some more action
@ absolutely. On my own property I blow the paths off with the leaf blower about once a week. We do this all year tho so the deer are accustomed to it. When I hunt the national forest I often slip on a pair of thick wool socks I smeared silicone on the bottoms to get around quietly. But I hunt from the ground primarily. I think one big thing to keep in mind is not being in a hurry. I used to always be in a rush to see what’s over the next hill. Finally realized the place I’m in now is usually just as good. I don’t take many deer from the ground with a long bow but when I do it sure is glorious. God bless. Enjoy the woods.
I have 1 day I can take off work. Trying to decide what day to take. What is your opinion on the best day to take off. I always have sat-mon off. I was thinking the 1st. The 5th. Or the 8th. Located southern/central Wi
I mean I get it, when hunting we can sit hours without seeing as much as a squirrel, the phone can be a nice distraction. But it can also be the reason we miss the big one! We need to try to limit our time on it for sure.
MI: Same for a lot of people. If your property is more of a travel route than a buck bedroom, this can be why. Plus the moon phase of course. This week should drastically change things. Finally got a nice one on cams at 10 a.m. two days ago. It's on!
Always! Can't hurt if they come downwind of where you put it and smell it . Don't put it downwind of your stand and I dont put it on my boots, I use raccoon piss for cover.
I've used estrous scents and I find it to be a deterrent to other does thus affecting the path the bucks take to search those does. Honestly, less is more and I've made my fair share of mistakes. Deer have advanced sensory in thier nose and smell and can tell when something is not quite right when using scents.

That's some good information on locations but as for calling I usually don't do it unless I got eyes on deer so I can see reaction.

I'm not genius but id hunt a spot like that only in the evening, and have a couple stand spots along the field edge so you can play the wind properly.
Fields are actually great for the rut. I have shot multiple bucks that chased doe into the field.
Evening hunts OR wait for the deer to clear the field in the morning then slip into your stand. Field edges are still good mid morning.
