    #11 Knowledge & Skills; eventually everyone preps will run out. What will you do then? Skills such as hunting, trapping, fishing, first aid, combat/tactical training, can be just as valuable as tangible long term storage items. Thank you for the advice on wool blankets. I'll definitely look to stock up on some.

    A few things I would add to the food list (which I would call a grocery list because everything here is not exactly food). First, especially if you have kids,
    a bag of hard candies (like the spearmint rounds), also the smarties last like 2 years. Just check the dates. You need something to help kids remember they are kids. 4 toothbrushes per person (1 year rotation), two tubes of toothpaste per person (approx. 1 year), bar soaps and shampoo (don't waste money or space on conditioner), fuel lantern (use your outdated olive oil as a fuel source). Condiments (I always grab a few extra salts/peppers/crushed peppers from McDonald's/Burger King/Taco Bell/Pizza Hut). But in addition, buy your favorite hot sauce, makes a world of difference when you are eating rice every meal. Finally, if you have kids, have at least 3 preferably 5+ board games for them. Nothing worse than a bored kid wondering off into a danger area.
    Remember, SHTF doesn't have to equal economic or governmental collapse, it could be a blizzard that isolated you for a month or longer, or you are a lone older person and your one vehicle dies and nobody checks on you for a few months. Would be nice not to run out of light (fuel lantern) or toothpaste. =)
    Our list is pretty extensive in our house (have a year supply of TP for one). But it is an ongoing mission. Not something to buy in one payday.
    Good luck, and stay ready!

    Disposable batteries are a finite resource. Rechargeable batteries and two or three solar chargers will keep you going for a long time. They do eventually wear out, so stockpile a few extra batteries (not many, but at least some). Get familiar with all your preps now (try them, use them). If you start using rechargeable batteries now, what you save during the next few months (over disposable batteries) will quickly cover the small extra initial cost. By the way, peanut butter is also great for baiting animal traps (food).

    Skip the boat load of batteries and go rechargeable with a small solar charger. Also, consider a handheld GPS receiver. In most grid down situations GPS will still work... and remember batteries for the GPSr.

    • @cathyrunnels1964
      @cathyrunnels1964 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ? Just starting out. Do you think the GPS on our cell phones will still work?

    • @jakemcmillian
      @jakemcmillian 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As you may know, GPS works by receiving the time of day from at least 3 sattelites. Your device uses the delay between these times to calculate your position. In a grid down situation without power or cell service these satellites will still transmit. In a massive solar event or CME, some of these satellites may be destroyed, but some will survive providing spotty or low resolution location. A handheld GPS can store a large amount of street data and topography maps. The problem with using a cell phone GPS is the map data is not usually stored on your phone. You can still get your coordinates, which can be useful if transmitting your location on UHF/VHF radio, or if you have a paper map with coordinates, but it not as useful as if you also have a soft map with topography data, river locations, etc. A handheld GPS can also calculate routing directions without any cell service. Some GPS apps allow you to download some maps locally to your phone, but routing directions and maps outside your download area will not be available - and on the Google maps app your downloaded maps expire after some period of time. Try turning on airplane mode on your phone and see what you get. Some phones disable GPS in airplane mode, so you may need to disable WIFI, data, and cell service instead of disabling all at once with airplane mode. In my experience, Android maps tend to work in airplane mode, but not iPhone. In any case, you will just get a blue dot in a field of grey if you don't have the map downloaded for each zoom level. With the right app, you can get latitude and longitude from that blue dot.

I have five kids and if we go off the grid for more than a month I dont think we'd make it. Suggestion, and only a suggestion, don't buy the largest container of peanut butter. It is better to buy small containers, because if SHTF and you do not have refrigeration, once that peanut butter is opened you are playing a time battle against bacteria. So small container. Also makes it much easier to throw one small container in your ruck if you are in a GET THE HELL OUT OF THE BURNING HOUSE scenario...

    The number one food to have if you could only have one......and you missed it. Raw, Unpasteurized, unfiltered HONEY.

    • @Docprepper
      @Docprepper 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      y? Its just sugar? There is no nutritional value in honey. It stays forever and never rots, that is a given, but why keep it if it has no nutritional value?

    • @joellyos
      @joellyos 10 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      I hope you are kidding. It has so many nutritional benefits. It is antibacterial, you can turn it into hydrogen peroxide, you can use it as a food preserver (soak a steak in honey, put it on the counter, and the meat will keep 10x longer than putting it in the fridge). It has GOOD sugar, tons of nutrients. You can use it as a flavouring. It never goes bad. You can use it medicinally , make soap from it, food/energy. Now the honey you buy in the store will do none of what I listed above, unless it is unfiltered and unpasteurized. It is a miracle food.

    • @joellyos

    The number one thing to prep for is unemployment. Always have a few updated resumes on hand, a nice outfit for interviews, at least three months of money to pay the bills, and a strong social network when you need assistance such as a family, and friends. That is the NUMBER ONE thing people should prep for first before getting into the for fun stuff.

    2 minute noodles (ramen) can be crushed up and put into a seperate bag so you can store LOTS of it and it doesnt take much space. Also HONEY does not go off. Just a few suggestions. Ramen noodles have literally 0 nutritional value. It's just starch covered in wax, then...sodium(salt) flavoring...never include garbage like that in your preps... it's enough to keep you feeling not hungry. but NOT enough to keep you nourished. It's useless weight

  • @douglasmcintyre3297

    I think responsible people should prep for both urban and wilderness survival.
    A key idea is the survival triangle. You need knowledge, ample survival resources and the ability to protect your body's core temperature. Without any one of those three it is very hard to survive that first night in the woods. Another key idea is the four W's: Water-close to you camp site; Wood-enough dry wood for fire and green wood for shelter construction; Wind-never have the mouth of your tarp or lean to facing the wind, always at 90 degrees to it to keep smoke out of your shelter and reduce heat loss from convection; and Widow makers-don't camp near leaning trees or branches above yo can can come down during a wind storm.
    My opinion of your video is:
    1) Choose a LED headlamp with flash mode instead of a hand held torch, which allows you to work or even walk in the dark if necessary while keeping your hands free. Plus one or two spare sets of batteries and a couple of beeswax candles
    2) No disagreement about carrying the FAK. It doesn't have to be too elaborate, just enough to address the sort of things that might occur in the outdoors: cotton bandanas to make a sling for someone with a broken arm, disinfectant, a couple pairs of rubber hospital gloves, a splint or two, insect repellant, burn ointment, a few bandages, sun block, pain medicine, maybe a couple of epi pens or other type of antihistamine if a family member has severe allergies, scissors, safety pins, gauze pads, tape etc
    3) Water storage is fine, but it's just as important to fill all your sinks, big soup pots and bathtubs within a few hours of the anticipated time of the emergency if it is known, to give you about 100 gallons of potable water. Chlorine bleach or 2% tincture of iodine (from the first-aid kit) make good disinfectants for water (4 drops per quart or litre) or cuts and scrapes. A few zip-locs make good improvise gloves to handle something infectious like a dead body. Knowing the five ways to obtain potable water is terrific information. There are also pricy gadgets that desalinate sea water, pretty pricy but a lifesaver if you're near the ocean that can desalinate about a quart of drinkable water per hour, a godsend if the municipal water supply becomes contaminated
    4) I believe in carrying at least three ways to create ignition: BIC lighter(s), a high-quality ferrocerium rod and a 5-10 power magnifying glass for creating ignition (never wears out or gets used up), plus a supply of dry tinder. In a pinch, a 20 minute road flare or two and some signalling flares may be what you need to make fire in difficult, damp conditions. I think those long barbecue lighters are superfluous, but better than no lighter at all.
    5) I like your food mix a lot, pretty easy to remember. Maybe add 20 cellophane packets of dried meats or jerky as well.
    6) Cellphones are good, but a personal locator beacon will immediately alert search and rescue that you need help, and give them your position as well
    7) As cover elements go, 90% pure wool blankets are almost as good and cost a fraction of the 100% blankets but the 100% blankets are the best. Sleeping bags or survival bivys also work well, if they have rainproof covers. Even large 3 mil polyethylene drum liners, the big 50" by 36" ones, made lightweight and effective emergency shelters that in a pinch will shed rain and help you retain your body's core temperature and survive the first night. If they're orange the make a good, bright signalling device as well. I also recommend each person have a 5' x 7' survival tarp/poncho that can be worn or quickly set up into some kind of tarp shelter, better than one big tarp that will fit the whole family
    8) I agree with the vitamins, to avoid developing chemical deficiencies. Also carry all needed medications
    9) 250 rounds of ammo? Really? Are you expecting the cavalry to try to take you out of your house someday? A good breechloading 12 gauge or combination gun plus 50 rounds is all you'll probably ever need in a survival situation, except during actual armageddon, which isn't likely to happen anytime soon. Except in the minds of a small, warped, hyper-dedicated number of NRA-propagandized minds.
    Something I didn't hear you mention was a way to cook food after the power goes out. Dig up a four' diameter chunk of sod, add a dozen six inch flat stones or cinder bricks and you've got a fire pit in the back yard. In a pinch you could actually cook in a big soup pot, fire and all. Also have a few other pans and pots and a few key spices: salt, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, garlic powder and some dried herbs to make the food less bland.
    For emergency kits in the car and office, I recommend Dave Canterbury's Ten C's of Survivability and Redundant Cs. The are:
    1) Cutting tool-a full-tang stainless or high carbon steel belt knife with a 5" blade and a sharp 90 degree spine to create a shower of hot sparks off the ferro rod to create ignition
    2) Combustion device(s)-lighter, ferro rod, magnifying glass plus a waterproof tinder pouch and a good beeswax candle
    3) Container-made of metal with a lid for boiling water, cooking food etc
    4) Cover, which includes everything from wearing appropriate clothing/headgear, gloves and footwear for the time and season to a small tent or survival tarp/poncho, sleeping bag/wool blanket/emergency bivy, or 3 mil plastic drum liners
    5) Cordage-a one pound roll of # 36 tatted bankline or 100 feet of 510 parachute cord
    6) Compass, with rotating bezel ring and signalling mirror
    7) Cotton bandanas, 3 x 3 feet square or the same sized pieces of old bed sheets, multiple uses for first aid, cleaning, as a container or even to make charred cloth that will take a spark readily to use as tinder, as a signalling device for rescue if its orange, as a scarf or kerchief, etc
    8) Candling device-a head lamp is best, with several modes including flash mode for signalling for rescue
    9) Canvas sail needle-for repairing clothing or tarps, as an improvised tweezers, can even be magnetized ahead of time to make an improvised compass to define a north-south line to aid in orienteering and navigation
    10) Cargo tape-a full 2" roll of Duct or Gorilla tape, a thousand uses like bandaging material, repairing shelter, taps or cloths, as fire tinder (the glue burns well), etc
    Plus some redundant items:
    1) Cutting tool-second belt knife or other cutting tool: axe, folding or bow-type saw or a good multi-tool
    2) Second metal container-like a mess kit or other camp cook set
    3) 2% tincture of iodine, as a general disinfectant for water or wounds
    4) A diamond sharpening rod to keep your tools sharp. Sharpening stones are great for most edges, but they're useless for sharpening a saw blade
    5) Wrist Rocket slingshot with heavy duty slingshot bands-these things can be used for a fairly accurate short range weapon to help get food out in the wild, to drinking water out of a crevasse, as trap engines, tourniquets, etc
    6) Frog gig-a multi-pronged metal stabbing weapon to pin down or catch small game or catch frogs and fish effectively in the dark, with a little help from the headlamp mentioned above
    7) Personal locator beacon and spare batteries-very important, to speed up rescue and give search and rescue your exact location
    Keep all these items in one or two large rubber dry bags (SEALINE is a good brand) with two position air valves, to keep all your critical items dry and provide a couple improvised flotation devices in a emergency.

    Being from Australia people don't need ammo. They can go get a big stick lol. I do however own firearms but even in a SHTF scenario it is illegal to fire them at people and every firearm sold in Aus is pre fired and kept on record for a ballistic match just incase. I also own several compound bows which are legal without a licence and even 6 yr olds can own 1 yet slingshots are 100% completely illegal and aren't even allowed to be made by young boys with elastic bands which boggles my mind.

      Tim Lipinski If we voted 'them' out the whole country would be empty. We don't want or need guns and we have a crime rate that is pretty much under control for most of us. Can't honestly say that about the US. It is interesting to see where the US stands against the developed world regarding violent crime. People on here from the US have stated that the country has had things too good for too long, and consequently has become complacent about being ready for disasters. Same applies to a long history of loose firearms policy. It has become a way of life. Guns don't enter my mind as I walk down the street with my bag of golf clubs! Please don't think that we are up nights worrying about not having guns to "protect" us, just because for the US it would be like having your nuts removed.

      +Winston Churchill No there wouldn't. Believe me, getting illegal guns here is ridiculously easy. I know 2 people who own them, one does it for self defense and the other because he likes guns. Both of those plan on living with the risk of getting caught, but someone who wants to commit murder suicide doesn't have to worry about getting caught since he'll be dead soon. In the end, legalizing or banning guns doesn't affect crime.

    Being prepared is a must. I've lived through a power out that lasted a week, all food went bad. My folks talked about he gas shortage in the 70's, natural disasters leave people without power food security. Anyone who questions prepping is in Lala land, or hasn't lived through the above stated unfortold occurrences. Now if you feel that you have to get 20 years of food ammo etc, don't feel overwhelmed, that is overkill in my opinion, or if you can and want to do that, more power to ya. Get your self some food some water a few flashlights a couple good knives, and a few guns with some ammo. Marketing ploy? Tell that to someone who lived in a neighborhood where Hurricane Katrina hit. I am not going to be hungry thirsty or robbed. Neither should anyone else, who takes the little time and effort to make sure that doesn't happen to their family.

      He talked about stuff to go buy. Everyone already has knives. That's the same reason he for example didn't talk about buying a gun. He only talked about having enough ammunition (even though I have no idea why 250 rounds are necessary). He didn't talk about getting firewood either. Because you can get it when you need to. He didn't talk about buying a can opener either. Because everyone either already has one or has a swiss army knife with a can opener. People currently manage to open cans just fine, just like people are currently managing cutting stuff just fine.

    robust walking boots, raincoat, hat, dry packed towel and a isomat.
    It is bad enough when on a nice warm day a sudden storm comes with heavy rain and and cold wind and all you got are slip-ons and a t-shirt (or your buisness outfit). It doesnt take much to loose such shoes in mud. Some people have boots and raincoat all the time in their car.

    First I assume you are prepping to survive, right? Flashlight and batteries, really? I started survival training when I was 8 years old (about 50 years ago). In those 50 years I have never carried a flashlight in a survival situation as it was one of the first things I was taught not to do. If you want to make yourself an easy target just turn on a flashlight! I have been in real life survival situations several times in my short life; field combat, covert operations and urban warfare. Know your territory (be it your own home or on the move cross country) and use that knowledge to your advantage. Home intruders are at a distinct disadvantage in the dark as you know the "territory" and they do not. Train your eyes to "see in the dark", it is much easier than you might suppose. Make darkness your friend.

    Why does every prepper advocate buying rice?... but not wheat? I'd say wheat is the better of the two.

    • @eNosArmory
      @eNosArmory  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Joe Stubbernubbensteingenson I have never in my life ever heard a pepper advocate not buying wheat. Now I know preppers that don't eat wheat, and therefore don't store much or any... but never stand up a poo poo wheat. Now for a basic start-up list that you can run out today and put together... we usually start with rice because its cheap, easy to buy, stores beautifully and doesn't require further processing, where as most people store wheat for later processing into flour. Furthermore there is a lower learning curve (most people know what to do with rice) than wheat berries and thus again is a good place for the beginner to start. Absolutely go out and buy or grow as much wheat as you little heart desires.... but for most people wheat storage is a next step once your basic emergency 30 day food supply is in. I have always viewed wheat as a tier 2 expansion.

    • @RollerPigg
      @RollerPigg 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not saying anyone advocates "not buying wheat" - It's just usually never mentioned. Wheat, along with a lot of other grains store well, are widely available (thanks to sites like www.bulkfoods.com), and can be replanted. I'm not sure if you can plant brown rice.

    • @eNosArmory
      @eNosArmory  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Joe Stubbernubbensteingenson yes.. it usually not mentioned because its not as easy to walk down to your local store and buy a 20lb bag for 8 bucks... most people have to order it and you have know what your ordering. Again... no one is saying its not a good idea... no one is saying it doesn't have many wonderful, bountiful and amazing benefits for a luscious existence. Almost every 30 day emergency food list has 2 things in common. 1. super convenient to get everything in 1 trip to your local store. 2. is based on the ready.gov emergency food recommendations. Secondly you are confusing a 30 day emergency food list with some sort of end scenario long term food storage and attainment plan. If you have a short-term food issue (say a localized weather event) where your 30 day store would come into play the average person is not going to start milling flour and planting wheat. They are just going to use the flour the already stored, which will keep for up to 2 years. Now if you looking at a second tier long term sustainment and attainment plan... then bulk storing wheat berries plays a more prominent role.

    A tip for anybody wondering: Which batteries should I buy first? AA or AAA?
    I say AAA, they're smaller, meaning if you had to, you could fit them into a AA slot and put some foil in the gap. I've never done that but I saw it somewhere.
    ALSO: (I do this many of times)
    If your batteries die premature, test each one (if you have multiple slots) out in different slots, using a small pen spring or foil to cover the gaps of the empty slots.
    ALTHOUGH using less batteries = less power, it's handy to follow the less is best rule when you are limited and know that they are hard to come by.
    I normally don't ask this but maybe give this a thumbs up for others!

    I completely agree when you refer to companies sell survival supplies, the problem I see with them is that if i situation arises where you need the supplies there is a high risk that there will not be a delivery service available (natural disaster) or the cost could become too high (economic disaster) in those cases it is more handy to know how to make the tools and consumables you will require, the best way I see to build these skills, is making your tools to begin with, this way you can reuse parts of these tools and also know how to make them from scratch.

    When I think of purposes for prepping, I try and steer clear from the more fantastical urban warfare stuff the American viewpoint seems to picture, and just go with 'big storm takes out the power for a week or so, and the shops can't restock', and plan for that. Happily enough, most of these listed things are adaptable to most situations. I would lose the guns and bullets and probably add basic tools and extra car fuel to the list of essentials. It really is stuff that every house should have. Great video, I enjoyed it.

    I'd also suggest foldable solar panel kits for recharging those batteries and devices, magnifying lenses, tarp, tent, clothes and blankets, needles and threads, ropes, salt and candies, machetes, basic mechanical and woodworking tool kit, seeds for growing food, hats, mosquito nets, nets and hooks for catching and trapping game, bags and bottles, books and pamphlets on how to survive in all types of environment ....... and friends and family to get your hopes way up and to help carry equipment and rations!

    One very important thing to add is first aid TRAINING. Having a first aid kit is 90% useless if you don't know how to use it. Also, it is critical to be able to improvise and perform first aid without having exactly what you need.

    Cyprus, Greece, Spain, Portugal ... when you see the situation in those countries, it's evident that prepping is necessary for any rational person. Anticipating is the best thing you can do to have a better life.

    Good topic, awesome presentation! On phones... If you have a land line coming into your house it can still be used to dial 911 even if there is not active service on the line.

    Good call on making your own first aid kit. I'm happy to see this getting more lip service in the last couple years. I've never found a FAK in a store that I didn't want to get rid of things from or add things to.

    Thank you so much, I am thirteen years old and I want to start prepping. I think the grocery list you brought up was great because everytime I go to the store I can just ask for a can or two of fruit or meat. I plan on watching more of your videos. Keep up the amazing work!

    often neglected is a flashdrive with your important papers and family photos. either carry in an anti-static bag or wrap in rubber and place in tiny metal tin. weighs nothing. might get one for everyone in your family.

    I can't stress enough how important it is to have a standard land line. A few years ago during a bad tornado season I lost power for over 4 weeks the phone still worked. As a side note even if you don't have service on the land line there is still power and with a little hacking there's enough power running through to power/charge USB devices. Unless you have a VOIP service that cuts that connection so that their service will work through the existing wall jacks.

    2-liter pop bottles are great for storing water; they don't degrade, they are easy to store and transport and are cheap.

    Great video, good common sense for preparing. I have a 300 watt inverter that hooks up to 12 volt car batteries, which one can use to plug in a rice cooker with. If they had a solar trickle charger to keep 3 deep cell 12 volt batteries charged up with, they would have a way to cook rice, beans, vegetables, soups, etc., and heat up water to boiling for safe use as well. Thanks for posting this video.
