@@jog8483 It's a rehearsal/soundcheck, not the aired live show, and it's exactly the right time to point out mistakes to ensure they don't happen when they're actually live. These are professional singers, it's not a kids talent show :)

@@pietro.novak_ You can say you think she's the best. Honestly, she's great. But that's a subjective opinion. They all do different things so people are going to think one of them is better than the other. I'm not a big fan of her tone personally but I know she's a phenomenal vocalist and has her own niche of fans like many artists do. Music is art. If you want to discuss vocals, that's up to the fans and how each artist makes them feel. If you want to speak on musical skills outside of singing, that's a whole different spectrum of who's better, because you can look up who put in more work in creating the songs. Even then, you might not care for it and that's okay too. Like who you like. It's futile to argue over who's the best since it's all subjective.
Vocals can be judged by technique. Technically speaking, Celine is better than even Whitney. Regarding Mariah, she has always been making some small mistakes the other two were not seen doing.

The lambs (Mariah fans) hold this dear to their hearts especially since this was just the beginning of her humongous career and success.
Fun fact: Mariah was a background singer before she got her record deal with demo tape that had 3 of the 4 Number ones on her debut album.
She's been around around the business and musicians since she was 12 with her mom being an opera singer.
This is why she is so musical and has written and produced almost all of her discography. Which is a feat in itself and is why she should be respected more than she is by the current generation of singers, musicians and listeners
She was recently inducted in the Songwriters Hall of Fame for writing 18 of her 19#s in addition to every other song she's done.

@@HegeOfficial There hasn't been a proper documentary on Mariah yet (tragic), but she just released her memoir in 2020 "The Meaning to Mariah Carey" and she narrates the audio book and it's an EXPERIENCE with her lyrics and singing intervoven through the chapters. She is in the works of producing a series adaptation of the memoir. And this year she had a Masterclass on Songwriting and Production releasing in the spring.
As well as an upcoming series on a streaming service (not revealed yet) that shows her songwriting and production process of her new album/project.
Her performance of this song at MSG in 93 is superior, look it up . That chest-whistle transition is something alien that will never be replicated but the rest of the performance was better at MSG.

If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have noticed her backup singers. Dude was probably whispering to his buddy that he would have to start looking for a new job. Seriously, how on earth do you track with her? I had no idea, whatsoever, what was going to come out of her mouth. I was aware of them until near the end until she went full Mariah. Not only did they fade out, so did the screen. I am so glad you dug this gem out of the box. It only increased my admiration of her, as I am sure it did yours..

This performance is so loved by the lambs (Mariah's fans).
Fun fact: that final whistle wasn't on the album version and she only did it twice: in this rehearsal and the actual SNL performance. Unfortunally the actual performance wasn't great... maybe she was insecure (she had stage fright in the beggining of her career).
If you'd like to hear this song live for real I'd recommend it live in New York at the Music Box Tour, 1993.
It leaked last year, it was recorded by a fan but the footage is really good for a 28 year old media.
Your facts are right; the album version doesn’t have that final whistle note and she only did it for SNL (rehearsal and live performances). And indeed she had stage fright at the beginning of her career… BUT (lol) I would disagree about the SNL live performance not being great. Yes, the rehearsal was much better (Mariah’s vocals anyway), but the live was also a remarkable live vocals. I bet nerves did affect her, but she still slayed. Finally, thanks for the tip; I’ll check out that 1993 live version 👍🏽

Mariah's powerful last notes literally rendered the camera man unconscious and he fell on the floor and taken to the hospital from 30 Rockefeller where SNL is taped. That is why the camera went to dark. He was in the hospital for over a week in a semi coma. But, he did regain consciousness and regained most of his mental faculty functions. That is how powerful and skilled Mariah's voice is that could not only break glass with her high notes, but also knockout brain function.
Your reactions are as fabulous as the performance! I love it. Your interpretation and explanation has enlightened my appreciation for the difficulty and skill necessary to perform at the level.
This is probably the best live performance ever along with the Star-Spangled Banner by Whitney Houston.

One little fact about the back up singers after watching this performance way too many times 😂:
I think the guy who was singing a little off key was the one in the left, because if you watch closely, at the beginning of the video there’s only two guys (Patrick and Trey, Mariah’s base backup singers, along with Billy who was playing the piano), then the camera zooms on Mariah as she starts singing and you can see a fast moving shadow on the back and when it zooms out there’s the other guy who also doesn’t have a mic, I guess they needed a 3rd backup singer since Billy was at the piano.
Also there are some of the harmonies you can tell he doesn’t know and doesn’t even sing or starts a bit late 😅
I think that’s why Patrick moves his hands and then whispers something to Trey lol like “this dude” hahaha jk, maybe trying to help him or something…
But props to him for filling in and helping a little with the rehearsal! 👏🏻

@@HegeOfficial As a lamb myself, I can admit that unfortunately, there's no live performance of this song (there are but it's lipped). It's because it's a vocal suicide song, I don't think anyone can ever perform it live lol. There's insane key changes, high belts even reaching A5, ridiculously fast melisma and transitions, etc. But please do react to its studio version at least 🙏 Thank you.

Whats interesting about this rehearsal is that the short guy their is a stand in because her piano player didnt make rehearsals so her 3rd back up vocalist is actually playing the piano. Probably why the other 2 were alittle off vocally 😂

It’s been said that Mariah Carey has perfect pitch, which could explain how she could easily tell when someone was off.
I know perfect pitch can diminish with age but it’s easy to believe she definitely had it when she was in her prime- never sang an off note

Sorry, but it's EXTREMELY unkind of her to call someone out so publicly during the song. She never hits a bad note?? Get outta here. She's not a nice person. Most of us wouldn't have caught that split second note failure. She spotlighted it.
She has had a couple of embarrassingly bad performances in past years (a Christmas special and a New Years Eve performance in Time Square). And then she went and pointed fingers. Apparently, SHE doesn't like to be called out publicly!!!
It's not unkind, it's professional. This is a rehearsal/soundcheck, and not the aired show, and it's exactly the right time to point out mistakes to ensure they don't happen when they're actually live. These are professional singers, it's not a kids talent show :) I highly doubt the backing vocalist gave it more than a second's thought, same with Mariah. We correct it and we move on sounding better.
This was a rehearsal so they are perfecting every note. Nothing personal and Mariah appreciates and loves all her backing vocalists bc she was once a background vocalist for Brenda K star
