    Very clear and informative video about DSD! Much better than what most explanations try to achieve.

    Great that clears up a lot of the waffle I hear on other channels, Most explanations are lacking because they skim on the details in order to be more comprehensible, I think particularly the mixing and processing aspects are skimmed by DSD evangelists and are more confusing for it. Of course the "DXD" PCM production interprocess has to be mentioned. but is de-emphasized because it clashes with the narrative that DSD is better than PCM when it is in fact dependent on it, just not the common formats.

    If I buy a SACD recording with the "DSD" printed on the label ... can I play it as a DSD recording into my DAC via a coax cable? or will it treat it as an SACD and now allow it due to the Sony copyright issues?

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All SACD's use DSD coding and these can't be played back other than in SACD players.

    • @Sams911

      @@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel but are all DSD codings SACD? Meaning if I download a DSD from a online site, can I play that back thru my DAC?

    How can the volume be delivered via 2 discreet signal levels? 10dB is, I'm told, a perceived doubling of volume. How can two signals 6dB apart achieve this? Is the illusion of volume achieved by varying the number of high and low signals to create infinite perceived volume levels? How do we generate signals from whisper right through to concert levels with a 6dB range in one file? Thanks.

      As explained in this video. It's a bit like with the old scales where you put in weights. You could use a 1 kilo weight or 100 weights of 10 grams. That is a lot of work and thus has to be done faster.

    Hi Hanz. I was hoping you could elaborate further for me as to why you say the Blu-Ray audio mediums hold 'lesser quality' factors than standard CDs. I find that the Pure Audio discs have no negative audio artifacts and that they are exponentially better and far more resolving than CDs. The Pure Audio discs aren't inferior to DSD or DXD files in my findings either. I recently bought Alan Parsons 'Tales of mystery and imagination' on Pure Audio at 24bit/96khz and it sounds far better than my cd copies. The resolution is insanely good. Anyway, I sure would appreciate your opinion. Thank you! :)

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I say that they hold lesser quality, theoretically at lest. As I said in the video is according the theory the resolution of DSD64 equal to 384/24 PCM. Thus is, theoretically at least 24 bit 192 a lower resolution.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Listening is an art;-) I said that DSD64 is //often regarded equal// to 24/384. I also indeed stated clearly that DSD64 can achieve a dynamic range equal to 20 bit PCM. So what's your problem? For the rest I simply disagree with you.

    What is the cheapest way to get native DSD playback? I have an Sony Xperia that plays DSD but it is converted to Hi Res PCM on the fly.

    • @glumfish6862
      @glumfish6862 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      satellite964 You have to get a DAC which uses DSD natively. I think the Pro Ject ones do (check out the Pro Ject Pre Box S2)

    Hi Hans, what about the Sonoma workstation. I understand it keeps the audio at DSD sample rate all the time during (postproduction) editing.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can do very basic editing. I understand it is not much more than editing tracks together.

    In this video you talk like SACD are a thing of the past but that's not true, there are a lot of SACD made, mostly by small labels in the Classical field and some labels use them a lot like the Swedish label BIS which has released almost exclusively SACD for quite a few years now.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know SACD's are still made, not only by BIS but also by Channel Classics in my country and BlueCoast in the US. But sales are so low that you won't find it on any statistics.

    • @ornleifs
      @ornleifs 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Could it be that they don't show up in statistics because most of them are hybrid discs and therefore are counted as CD's.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know of labels that say they still produce SACD's but that would love to sell the total inventory SACD's since only DSD is downloaded. In contrast to cd's - which I still buy and rip and keep the cd as back-up - SACD's aren't easily ripped.

      I was one of the very first people to hear SACD at sony labs in New Jersey at 11 at night well before it's release. I was unimpressed despite 4 nelson Pass class A monoblocks and $25,000 sony speakers. In people's homes the same thing. We started calling it SAD CD. I have a few discs on both formats to compare and I don't think different is necessarily better.

    Awesome explanations!! I trust my Ears and my observations are AAC/MP3 -> FLAC /WAV(16bit) -> FLAC /WAV(24bit) -> DSD. I found DSD to be more clear and spacious sound and much more improved in compare with mp3. However, I also feel that DSD does not have a punchy and tight base like mp3 have. I have compared the same albums using original CDs and DSD from HiRes online paid store. I prefer mp3 over AAC. I could not find any differences between DSD64, DSD128 and DSD256. I have TOPPING D30 and Cambridge Audio Dac Magic, and I like DacMagic than Topping. I am also planning to buy Chord Mojo.
    I enjoy music in Sansa ClipZip(with Rockbox) , Fiio X3 (2nd Gen) and Sony NZ hi res player beside computer audio. .

      @@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Why? 🙂Well it sounded better than CD or Dolby Digital to my ears, it played on most/all DVD players ($ to $$$) and came on readily available disc media. I'm not sure of the licensing costs etc but it seemed like a great successor to CD quality music to me. (P.S. Love your work Hans!🤗)

    Is than DSD similar/same method that a digital amplifiers uses?
    (just to imagine it...so if you would "feed" those ones and zeroes that DSD consists of directly to a gate of mosfet power transistor, and then aply some lowpass filtering on output, would you get "understandable" soundwave out?)

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on what you consider digital amps. There is a very little number of true digital amps and Class D amps seldom are digital. But roughly - very roughly - you could say that.

  • @BatEatsMoth

    In practical terms, is this better than 24 bit/192 kHz recording?

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That largely depends on the recording and player used. But I enjoy DSD very much.
