  • Hi everyone! This song was suggested by Felipe Nogueira!
Dave confuses the name of the album with the name of the song, but these things happen.
Smooth pop funk! Dave says he digs it!
Thank you for the suggestion Felipe!

Tatsuro Yamashita is a treasure. A household name in Japan. Has a really popular Xmas song, super humble guy and very private.
Tatsuro Yamashita has been in music since 1972. somehow, his voice remains crystal clear at the age of 68 today.
He really is an inspiration to me. Especially the unsung heroes in the band such as Koki Ito on Bass and Jun Aoyama (RIP)on Drums.
Owning the Vinyl for Ride on time is the best thing I have ever done. The man is a beast and concerts from him sometimes go over 3 hours in length

Japanese 70's to 80's City pop genre. Tatsuro Yamashit and R.I.P. Eiichi Ohtaki was the most popular two singers.

Tatsuro Yamashita is one of the best singer-songwriters in the world. Especially the guitar is wonderful. Once you hear it, you will be captivated.

That man is a "Sound Craftsman ha! " a "Symbol of Japanese Outdoor Music" I guess that is their equivalent of the phrase, "Yacht rock," but itsounds less derogatory. Great funk pop. Nice groove. Very radio friendly. I dug it. Here's another 80s sounding metal tune for Dave to check with a real powerhouse vocalist. This would def get radio play if was back then. Its One Desire, "Hurt" One Desire - "Hurt" (Official Music Video) - TH-cam

One of the fun(yet quite sad in the listeners perspective in terms of gathering a mass audience) facts about Tatsuro Yamashita is that he continues to only sell his music on either vinyl, cassettes and DVD's because he believes that having music on digital platforms ruins the way you listen to it and the overall experience to what music in a listener's perspective should be. This is why sadly it is hard to come by Tatsuro outside of public services where users can upload recorded files without too much issue in terms of copyright and other complications like. That is why Tatsuro is usually only found on platforms like TH-cam, Soundcloud, etc. Anyways, I'm glad Dave was able to enjoy this song and Tatsuro as a whole, because I sure do love him. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and reactions to truly a one of a kind individual. I hope to see more of this in the channel(if it helps I suggest you listen to 'Kiss the Sun' by Tatsuro, one of my favorites).

Japanese were ahead of their time in the 70s 80s.... the talent and art being produced in their time compared to the last 20 years of garbage being pumped out everywhere.... RIP

Always good to see someone else enjoy the King of City Pop's music. I've been listening to Japanese musicians for years, even before I started learning the language itself. You're right when you say not understanding the language really does help you see the vocals as another instrument. Helps to appreciate the melody for what it is.
Jazz never really lost as much popularity in Japan as compared to the US, and now many of their pop songs use all sorts of chord extensions and jazz-like progressions.
I don't want to spoil the mystery of the whole song with detailed translations, but I will say the general theme of the song is nostalgic longing for a summer love gone by. And I certainly think the composition achieves that feeling even without the lyrics aiding that understanding
Edit: also I just noticed you uploaded this on my birthday last year and I wish I'd have seen it then haha

Now this is much better! 340 'like's and 24 comments. Finally, we've got some sort of audience for smoothness. Well, it's J-Pop but I'm not complaining. There are some extremely talented musicians from Japan. The first band I think of is Hiroshima. Then there's Jeff Kashiwa; who's from Louisville, KY, but you can tell his parents are Japanese. Akiko Yano is worth mentioning, because she's VERY talented. And I highly recommend the After 5 Clash album by Toshiki Kadomatsu.
