  • Russian America (Russian: Русская Америка, Russkaya Amerika) was the name of the Russian colonial possessions in North America from 1733 to 1867. Its capital was Novo-Archangelsk (New Archangel), which is now Sitka, Alaska, USA. Settlements spanned parts of what are now the U.S. states of California, Alaska and two ports in Hawaii. Formal incorporation of the possessions by Russia did not take place until the Ukase of 1799 which established a monopoly for the Russian-American Company and also granted the Russian Orthodox Church certain rights in the new possessions. Many of its possessions were abandoned in the 19th century. In 1867, Russia sold its last remaining possessions to the United States of America for $7.2 million ($126 million in today's terms).

    The Cold War could have been a lot more interesting if the Soviets had still owned Alaska! Hawaii was an independent kingdom nation as i'm sure you're all aware, until ruthlessly colonised and then annexed by the US, (its people threatened, its sovereignty literally taken when the US abolished the Hawaiian monarchy). But anyway, Боже Царя храни

    • @morsecode980
      @morsecode980 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Russia also tried to colonize Hawaii, though it’s probable that under Russia, Hawaii would’ve retained its monarchy and just become a Grand Duchy within Russia similarly to Poland or Finland
      As for Alaska itself, if Russia kept it, they probably would’ve lost it during the Civil War

    • @01782644468
      @01782644468 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@morsecode980 I didn't know that Russia had ever tried colonising Hawaii, so you really do learn something new every day, thanks! A good point about the Civil War too, I wonder who would have tried to grab Alaska first, Britain/Canada or the US?

    • @morsecode980
      @morsecode980 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ben309 Yeah, Russia got around. In the America’s they went as far south as Northern California, built forts in the western islands of Hawaii, and tried to establish an African colony in modern-Djibouti.
      Alaska’s fate would depend on how many Russians settle it in a no-sale timeline. The discovery of gold and oil could drive Russia to try to integrate Alaska into the rest of the country, though it’d be difficult given its physical separation.
      If there still weren’t very many Russians in Alaska by 1917, then when the Allied Invasion of Siberia would begin the following year, Alaska would probably be jointly occupied by both the USA and Canada until an agreement would be reached wherein it’d be handed over to one of them.
      However, if gold, oil, and perhaps wanting to get away from the autocratic and oppressive Russian government prompted lots of citizens to move there to the point of Alaska truly being a Russian-dominated region, Alaska may very well separate from the mainland and have its independence guaranteed by the Allies so the Soviets wouldn’t invade. But that’s all speculation on my part.

    • @01782644468
      @01782644468 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@morsecode980 Now your last paragraph excites me, the hypothesis of there being "two Russias" ! A very China/Taiwan situation. And then would come the inevitable scramble over who is the legitimate government...I can picture native Russian-Alaskans being challenged by the remnants of the Kerensky/February 1917 provisional government, and even by the Romanovs...(possibly, it took the family a while to regroup around Grand Duke Kirill)

    • @morsecode980
      @morsecode980 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Ben309 There’s some alternate history forums online that speculate Alaska’s fate. I’ll summarize various timelines presented in order of likeliness, first being most likely, bottom being least likely in my opinion.
      1. Independent Pro-West Alaskan Republic
      Similarly to how the Russian Civil War consisted of various armies influenced by varying beliefs - the Whites being a mix of Republicans, Monarchists, and such; Reds being Communists and Socialists; Green’s being rural farms, etc - I could see a couple new army colors being formed in Alaska, the first of which would be the “Blue Army,” made up mostly of European-descended Alaskans as well as immigrants from America and Canada. This Blue Army would be made up almost entirely of Republicans and Democratic Socialists, highly influenced by American and Western ideals thanks to their proximity to the USA. They’d fight to establish an Alaska friendly to the west without any oppressive monarchies or Communism. They’d be supported by the Allies no-doubt.
      2. Tsardom of Alaska
      You may be aware that during the Russian Civil War, once the Red Army started winning in European Russia, what became known as a massive wave of immigration of pro-White Army people called “White Emigréis” retreated through Siberia to Russia’s Pacific coast. Some stayed and fought there while others fled across the globe. In a scenario with an independent Alaska, the Whites would probably mostly all flee there. If their leader, Alexander Kolchak, and the Royal Family agreed to go there as well, they’d have a lot more support. This massive arrival of pro-Tsar whites into Alaska would piss off the aforementioned pro-democracy Blue Army and the Native Americans for sure, but like I said, if they had leadership, it’d be enough of a morale boost to give them a fighting chance. This would result in the fictional “Alaskan Front” of the Civil War, with Blues and Whites pounding each other while Natives were caught up in the middle. If the Whites ended up being able to establish a government, a “Tsardom of Alaska” meant to succeed the Russian Empire would be founded. However, the government would most likely be highly unstable and prone to collapse unless the Tsar would be willing to give up most of their power to a parliament. Even then, lots of Alaskans may flee to the USA and Canada along with Natives.
      3. Alaska Becomes a U.S. or Canadian Territory
      During the Allied Invasion of Siberia, as mentioned, the USA and Canada would be key in determining Alaska’s future. Even in a reality with Alaska being highly populated by Russians, America could still try enforcing the Monroe Doctrine to force Russia out and do one last massive expansion of its borders after having not done so since the war with Mexico. I think this would be most likely in this scenario, as Canada was still highly influenced by Britain.
      4. Communist Alaska or Alaskan SSR
      After the Soviets would finished conquering Russia (perhaps a bit earlier in this timeline given the much smaller Russian White Army) they may feel brave enough to cross the Bering Strait into Alaska to retain access to its oil and gold reserves, and to also serve as an excellent metaphorical vantage point against America in future years.
      However, whether Alaska would be a Soviet Socialist Republic within the Union or a full-fledged Communist nation idk. But either way, the Allies would not stand for this, and probably join the Blues and Whites against them to ensure this didn’t happen.
      5. Native American Alaskan Republic
      Another army that could arise in the region during the Civil War would be an army made of the native Tlingit tribe of Native Americans. Though their numbers would be few, and highly outclassed by their Russian rulers, they’d probably be sick and tired of both being disrespected and oppressed by Europeans and also the war. If they somehow beat back the Blue’s, Whites, etc, they could establish the world’s first proper Native American-ruled country in the America’s, which would be historic.

      It would’ve been tough for Russia to keep hold of Alaska if they didn’t sell it. When gold would be discovered there, they’d try to take advantage of it, but neighboring British Canada would likely want to as well. If the Brits decided they wanted Alaska, they likely could’ve easily taken it from the Russians.
      The only way it’d stay Russian is if the British/Canadians for some reason decided to let Russia have their moment. Even then, Alaska would likely be lost during the Revolution and Civil War
