He doesn't want to be like Bruce is with his family and friends, he doesn't want all the darkness and anger. Which is why in the comics when Batman disappears it's usually Dick that dons the Bat Suit while the Bat Family (Barbara Gordon, Damien Wayne, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Batwoman, Azrael, etc.) steps up their crime-fighting around Gotham to compensate for Bruce not being there. Dick is the hero that's needed, not the one that's wanted.
