    I would say that u could compare how socially responsible Eric is with how socially responsible Mr Birling is. The quote " a man has to mind his own business and look after himself and his own" shows that he doesn't care for other people's problems and struggle's. He arrogantly acts like he is teaching Gerald and Eric when in reality he is just being a typical stubborn upper class member, who's brainwashing the younger generations so that they'll be more like him, which is selfish. On the other hand, Eric steals from his dad's buisness, which is bad. However in the quote "I insisted on giving her enough money to keep going" we learn that he stole from his rich father to provide for a mistreated, struggling and poor girl. I believe that Priestley portrays the situation this way, to indicate that Eric is, in a way, socially responsible and looks after the poor, unlike his father.

    • @DystopiaJunkie
      @DystopiaJunkie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      A nice comparison there, Jake! Isn't it interesting that Eric's most socially responsible moment is also the moment where he shows the least responsibility towards his family business? I wonder if Priestley is making some sort of comment there... 🤔

    • @_Anti_Communist_
      @_Anti_Communist_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Stealing is still no excuse, if Eric was poor he would be regarded as undeserving, even then it would be hard to accept the theft he committed, the fact he comes from an upper-middle class family means he has the money and stealing is therefore even more unacceptable. Eric is about 20 to 23 and is old enough to work so there is no excuse for him to take money from his father.

    • @daleeea
      @daleeea 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s also interesting how Eric also states that Mr Birling is not the type of father a chap can go to when he’s in trouble- showing that his fathers lack of presence has caused him to stray away from his fathers capitalist ideologies and seek something to rebel away from him. Possible resentment from childhood?

    I actually think the opposite about what you said about Gerald "insisting .. making" her accept his generosity. I think it's just him trying to cover up what he did as something acceptable- he is trying to seem responsible, but the reality is that he only used her for his own benefit and got rid of her once it was inconvenient for him (his friend returning form Canada+ taking back his rooms). The responsible thing to do would have been to find her a stable place to live and work, but he let her leave without much care instead. I think this shows how little Gerald cares about responsibility, representing how little capitalists care about it, and only want to seem generous while being entirely selfish to improve their reputation. Great video though, really informative and thought provoking! Thank a lot!

    • @DystopiaJunkie
      @DystopiaJunkie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah of course!
      - Passive role: almost in the role of an 'object'. Things are done to you, rather than you actively doing things.
      - to have agency is to have the ability to do things, especially ones that enact change.
      So basically, by forcing his social responsibility on Eva/Daisy, it's almost as if she's been turned into a powerless object. She has no say in what happens, because he is insistent on supporting her.
      How's that?

    tysm! are there any specific point about how responsibility is presented in act 3? also I'm doing an essay for how responsibility is presented, not specifically social responsibility. if I just talk about what you have included in this video, would that be ok?

    • @DystopiaJunkie
      @DystopiaJunkie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You're very welcome! Sorry for the delayed reply; I'd say that any quotation relating to social responsibility would be okay for an essay about responsibility, for sure. If you're thinking about the final part of the play, I'd consider looking at how the characters react to the Inspector being a 'fake' - Sheila and Eric still want to take on responsibility for their actions, even if it didn't lead to a young woman's death, whereas the rest of the characters are relieved that they won't face any consequences.

      Hmm... I'd say that might be a step too far. The working class were paid (albeit poorly!), were not owned by the middle and upper classes, and the term 'slave' obviously has those awful historical connotations (and so to use it in this context might detract from the awful experiences slaves went through, etc.). I would say that the working class were viewed as less worthy and expendable, and perhaps even sub-human. How does that sound to you?
