    Going through trade school I was taught that using photos in your art can be cheating in a way.
    After I graduated high school/trade school I went to college and got two bachelor degrees one in Game Art Design and the other degree in Graphic Design, want to know what they taught me, "Using photos isn't cheating, as long as you admit that you are using photos." I used to look at all this concept art and manga panels in amazement but I didn't realize they were completely utilizing not only their skills but also the program's skills to manipulate images to make it something completely different.
    For new artists I always tell them to learn the fundamentals and then start messing around with this and the results are **insane** if do you.

      haha YEAH!!! totally agree! When starting you need to DRAW a lot and everithing so when you start using phintures you know what to do with them to make them look like drawings. haha.

      And if you're really advanced you can make 3d models of the building or backup as a little mockup and sketch in the details
      I prefer this method because it's better for a building or environment you plan on drawing over and over again from different angles

    The only issue I have with this method (as you presented it) is that the style of the character doesn’t match the style of the environment, but all around, this is really cool!
    How I would go about it is by masking out the sky, then after lowering the opacity of the photo, I would begin to create line work over it on a new layer. This way, you can stylize the environment, sky and all, to your liking.
    If you wanna take it a step further, you can can kit bash, which is when you use multiple photos to add in bits and pieces (rubble, trees, people, animals, textures, etc…). It’ll totally bring life to your pieces

    Yo, ty for the insight :) I’ve been messing around with screen tone brushes but the one thing I can’t figure out is how to size the dots easily and correctly. Do you just have to change the resolution of the canvas? I don’t think I have the same brushes, but for the ones I’m using, resizing the brush doesn’t scale the size of the dots. it’s quite annoying to have to go change the brush settings to get the right scale every time so I’m wondering if there’s something I’m missing, or if I should look into finding better screen tone brushes. Thx :)

    • @johnkillink
      @johnkillink  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! I've been there. and yeah is boring to change pencil settings all the time. To avoid doing that, I paint a big section of the screentone I want to use on a separate layer, so then, I can pic the layer and shrink it to the dot size I want. Is like working with a real piece of screentone paper. Then I erase the places that should be white. I hope it makes sense. Also changing the dpi of the canvas might work. GOOD LUCK! and SORRY for the LATE reply!!
