Thank you for your time and effort to put this video together. I road up that holler with my father back in the early 1950s when I was a child with my father and sometimes the sister and mother. I was born in Elbert in the winter of 1948 at my grandparents house up on the hill above the railroad cut behind the Company Store. My father and mother and I lived almost across from the school house until my sister was born and grew up to around 3. Then, with mom expecting again, we moved to Wilco and lived there in a 2 bedroom duplex with a basement until we moved to Virginia in 1956. I miss those hollers. Mom’s folks lived up in Number 13 Holler which has been strip mined. There used to be a beautiful creek with rock walls and bridges to the neighbors house up where the houses and road ended and the forest remained. It was good hunting and a beautiful area. I have my uncles 10 point (very conservative) Buck that he tracked for two seasons. When he checked it at the Ranger’s station, they took something, maybe a tooth, and he got a certificate back saying that it was the oldest buck that they had ever seen at that time. Thank you for sharing, we own some family land in Cumberland Kentucky in Sawmill Holler, but our holler goes up really really steep to you get to our land Some of the road has fallen apart making it hard to drive up there it was hard driving before cause you could go over the mountain, you can only go one way but once you get up to our land we was lucky to have a little not much flat part then all the hills and mountains. It's been in our family since the late 1800's and every generation some family member live on it to survive, no ones on it now. I love seeing these videos.
I know you probably don't remember but right after you turn left past that first bridge, off of the main road, there use to be a long row of appartments across from that brick building that burned, that were a long the creek. I had family that lived in almost all of those apartments at one time. At the very far end, closest to the train trusel is where my grandma and grandpa lived. Instead of just driving over the tracks, the road used to run straight in front of the row of appartments. I still see the gravel road but guess you can't drive under the tracks No more. I appreciate you taking your time to make this. Even though it's all grown up, I can see in my mind what it used to look like. Spent a lot of time walking that holler. my grandmother lives there. she just had her knees amputated so her legs are stiff like pegs but she still walks that gravel road faster than what u drive it.

I've lived in McDowell County all my life up to this point but I've never been in Sawmill Holler! And I don't know why because I've been all over the county. I had no idea it was so nice and can tell like much of the county it's been much more populated and important to the coal industry!
My dad was born in panther I think he always wanted to take me down to McDowell to meet family before he passed unfortunately we never made it I wish I would I would love knowing my extended family ....I have an uncle thats buried down there he was killed in a hunting accident at a young age

Hello from Wisconsin. WV is absolutely beautiful. Plan on moving there next year after my daughter graduates. I want to start a little homestead and enjoy the peace and quiet. If any one has any pointers please let me know
West Virginia is a beautiful place but it can be very dangerous you have black bears and other dangerous animals but also there's a lot of mountains them to be dangerous and deadly by themselves just be careful it's beautiful but dangerous

I'm leaving ms. in about a week and all I want is a small place to put a tiny house grow a garden and raise me some chickens but I don't want to be near drunks are dope heads are loud people......is there any land for sale i have cash ...about a acre ....with shade a must ....?????

I lived in McDowell Co for 10 years, and with the exception of a severe drug problem it was beautiful.
I rent a small amount of land there if somebody just wanted to rent to me at first ..???????
