When I was a child Christmas in Scotland was a normal working day, it wasn't until we started to get televisions in the late 1960s / early 70s that we got Christmas, but it was the American and not European styled. However Hogmanay was a huge celebration, we used to celebrate it for the whole of January

That's really interesting! I like the idea of having something to celebrate throughout the whole of January - it's such a miserable part of year when there's nothing to look forward to!

I had a lovely time during my visit this Christmas 🌹 We were staying at a little inn 45 min outside of Edinburgh, and it was such a cosy Christmas vibe ❤️

Hogmanay is an officially recognised holiday in Scotland, so I'm very much looking forward to sleeping in while my colleagues start their work day :)

Wow, taking a dip this time of year? Illegal Christmas in the past? Hogmanay traditions…this was great and informative 😮

Glad you enjoyed it! Honestly, people going for a wild swim when it's almost freezing outside is something that I see more and more during our travels - apparently became extremely popular during lockdowns!

I'd love to visit Edinburgh during Hoghmanay but I have been told that it might be a bit challenging to find an affordable place to stay so I think it might be a good oppurtunity to explore the rest of the beautiful country of Scotland!

Santa Claus would always appear on New Years Day for my mother in the 1950's in rural Aberdeenshire.

There is a Loony Dook at Portobello on New Year's Day. We usually go along to watch but not mad/brave enough to take part 😄

Interesting! I never knew that about Christmas being outlawed. Be honest, it sounds like the plot of a bad children's movie

starting when i was about 5or 6 i went outside with the men to wait until 12:00.factory whistles would sound around niagara falls along with people banging on pots and pans.
when we went back in it was lots of hugging and crying.as a adult i took this as a return of the men from far away.i have never been inside at midnight! even i the army i first footed my barracks in Korea.i have a lump of coal from my grandmothers home that i still use, i,m 77 now and go out with the bread, candy, pennys and such.
