  • I decided to make a part 2, due to the popularity of these hardwood cuttings of the green giant arborvitae. We'll talk about how I deal with them after they've rooted and when I pot them up. Rooting these cuttings is so easy and they provide a very dense privacy hedge for your landscape.

Yeah, and such big root balls. I put them in pots, and by the time I was done I think I had 10 potted up. They are soooo beautiful. And it's all because of you 😁😁😀😊😊🤣🙃🤗🤗

What kind of soil should we use for potted Japanese maple, we live in a place that is zone 5. I usually take the cuttings in mid to late April, before the new growth starts. Leave them in the propagation frame for a whole year as they root and pot up the following spring. Then 1 more year in the pots, and then plant in the landscape.

    I read a nursery book that recommends mixing the granular slow release fertilizer in to the potting mix, but it looks like you have excellent results without even needing to do that. Have you ever tried and found that its just not worth the extra time?
    I have 8month old northern pine bark breaking down, im trying it as a potting medium. Despite better drainage it has not out performed soil yet, i'm still struggling to get easy performant all purpose potting medium, but my fertilizer program was poor, changing that now. I have to assume thats my missing part.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The granular slow release fertilizer is meant to be placed on top of the soil. For me, it would be a waste of time to mix it in and I'd gain nothing.

    Hi there Mike.
    Great videos thanks for all your helpful tips.
    I want to take some cuttings from my backyard privacy hedge and grow some more cedars to extend my hedge in a few locations.
    I was wondering a few things and would really appreciate your input.
    How large of a cutting can I take?
    I have multiple branches close to 2ft long that I can cut from my hedge without an issue.
    Can I root cuttings this large?
    Can I plant them directly into the location I want them if I use some sand or fine chip mulch in the hole to help root the cuttings?
    Have you ever done it this way with success?
    I'm trying to get a jump start in size if I can by rooting larger cuttings. Wondering if this could work. If so my hedges would already be 2ft-3ft depending on the cuttings I take.
    And my last question is when would be the ideal time to do this. Spring, Summer or Fall?
    I live in Ontario, Canada, zone 5.
    Any advice and tips would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks MIke for all your videos and info.
    Happy Gardening.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Larger diameter cuttings will root but I'd cut down their height so the new roots don't struggle to support a huge plant in the beginning. You'll have a better outcome in the long run this way. I've never tried this with cedars but, yes, this works with many plants.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Different plants root better with different techniques. Generally, these type of plants root better as hardwood cuttings during the dormant season. They root more slowly and so you don't want to create a humid environment with warmth around the tops or they can mold and rot. You also don't want them breaking dormancy in a warm house before they've rooted. That's why I root these outdoors on bottom heat. Some plants will root very well during the growing season inside your home.

    Would this work on birch trees? About this time a month ago I took a birch tree cutting from a birch in my yard. I think it’s a river birch and the cutting was a hardwood cutting about 12 inches ling about the thickness of a pencil. Well I have it in a red solo cup with a plastic bag over it. It has a leaf on it with a couple more coming out but it doesn't have any roots yet. How long does it take for hardwood cuttings to start to form roots? Will this birch eventually grow roots or is it just living off the moisture in the bag? I have a plastic ziploc back on it to hold in moisture. Thanks.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hardwood cuttings don't require humidity and it can be detrimental to them. I don't cover mine with anything and just let them leaf out naturally after they root and as the warm weather wakes them up. keeping hardwood cuttings humid promotes fungal growth and eventually rot.

      Mike Dan, I bought one in 2018 after watching one of Mike's propagation videos. He mentioned that it was heavy duty and wasn't specifically for plants. He also said it gets warmer than the ones typically sold for seed starting, that's why he sets his cutting tubs up on wood strips (so they don't overheat). Here's a link to the one I bought (on Amazon), I believe it's called a foot-warming pad. I hope this helps.

      They growing fast but not fast enough, lol. I'd like them 30 foot high by now. They're actually growing pretty quick considering I purchased them 4 years ago when they were 6 inches tall each and planted them 3 years ago. They are now between 5 and 7 feet tall! They seem to be growing quicker each year so I think in another 3 years they'll be up over 10 to 12 feet tall.

    can I do the propagation in the winter?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. I prefer the spring so that by the time they start rooting the weather is warming and they can just start putting on growth for the growing season.

    I failed my rododendron cuttings :( They were lush and green for 2 months and then they started to die. I used root it gel and normal plant soil. Maybe thats what i did wrong and watering too?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regular soil is too compact and wet, plus it is full of fungi and bacteria. You want to root in something that drains well but holds some moisture and is inert.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but that would take a lot of miracle grow to keep them fertilized all summer long. I highly recommend a slow release fertilizer that's formulated for landscape plants.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The label will say if it's registered or copyrighted/patented. If it doesn't say, you can look it up online. I don't like to mess around with copyrighted plants because you can't sell them without permission and usually a royalty to the owner. There are so many beautiful plants out there that aren't copyrighted.

    This plant is a money maker, I don't get much money per plant but I can sell thousands in one transaction and its not exactly hard work to mass produce them.
