We’ve been several times in November or December and trips were great except for one trip 2 yrs ago the first week of December. I was really surprised and disappointed with the crowds and traffic. Didn’t expect it then. Took us 3 hrs to drive through Cades Cove and did not stop at all because of the crowds. In 2007 we rented a beautiful cabin just outside gatlinburg December 15th through 23rd for our adult children and grandchildren and celebrated Christmas. It was a perfect trip….got there on Saturday and Sunday morning it was snowing, just enough to play but not shut in and of course being from south Louisiana, most grandchildren had never seen snow. Was so thankful for that trip and time together…..3-1/2 years later we lost our oldest son so we have wonderful memories of that trip to treasure.

But honestly, DO NOT go during car shows. The traffic is horrific and there's always lots of people at the attractions/restaurants or whatever. Trust me, my family's been going for over like 20 years (I think, maybe more) and you don't want to get stuck behind the car show line. (Going during at the end of months and when kids are in school is really better because there won't be so many people because when you go, it's mostly families.)

I would like to go when attractions are open but it’s not slammed full of people. I expect it to be a little busy, and just recently we did end up going during Rod week and wow.. just wow. It was painful trying to get down the strip. If you had to pick a week where the weather is comfortable and the people would maybe not be as heavy and everything was still open what week would it be? Trying to plan the next getaway and I figured if I started to talk to some people that are very familiar with the area then maybe I could have better odds getting my family there during a decent time.

A week that worked well for my family on our last trip was the week towards the end of October, but September could work too. Going during fall months and maybe even the first week of December really helps because most people go during the summer and/or spring, or that's at least when my family goes. We just make sure to pack and dress according to the weather, because it's a lot easier than having to into shops and buy a new coat every time. I hope that helps! :)

We love February in the Smokies. The average highs are in the 50s, it is like spring to us from Michigan. We visited Cades Cove in a middle February day 2023, blue skies and the temperature was in the low 70s. The daffodils were up and bright yellow. I told the wife, look behind us… not a single vehicle behind us or in front of us in early afternoon in the Cades Cove loop road lol. Believe me, February is THE BEST time to visit the GSMNP. So peaceful, warm for those coming down from the Midwest and most everything is open and more enjoyable.

I will never, ever come during Rod Run again. Two years ago during Fall Road Run, it took me 7 HOURS to go from Sevierville to Huck Finn's. I always check online to see when that "car show" is. At one time, they were supposed to move it all to LeConte Center, but that didn't work. So unless you want to get into town before the show starts and you don't want to drive anywhere or eat out, you should avoid during that week/weekend.

We go week of thanksgiving most years. Fall colors have pretty much went away but we go then because of kids being out of school. I personally like for it to be cold when in mountains, and in November that’s a 50/50 chance. Best trip of all was appx 30 years ago in late November and had several inches of snow. I won’t go to mountains in summer because if heat. I hate the humid heat. Have been in January several times, usually just me and wife, no kids or grandkids and yes it is somewhat depressing because Holliday season is over, but it’s a great time not to have to fight crowds and just enjoy gatlinburg and the Smokies.

The most crowded times are rod runs and Holiday weekends. Not sure if this happens anymore, but sales tax-free weekend used to be very crowded as well. Fall break brings a lot because of the trees and Spring break is usually crowded but not terrible. Do not go during the 1st two weeks in October for Fall Break for the kids. Its was so crowded in Dollywood! I got a souvenir just when I arrived to avoid the crowd. The rides were a 60-75 minute wait time. The food lines were long except for Red's. At 12 pm I was the second person in line! I couldn't believe it. That burger was delish! A little on the pink side for me but I was hungry! Lol.
Gatlinburg too was crowded. Lines to get doughnuts, which we stayed to get from The Donut Friar. Not bad. Forget about going into a restaurant or ordering take out. So we ate at Mountain Grill Cafe inside Glenstone Lodge where we stayed. Not bad but their pizza was tasty. We still got to enjoy ourselves. My first time there but second time for my parents. We're going to Gatlinburg with friends Nov 10th through Nov 17th. I looked up things to do and you're right About this not being a unique little mountain town. I'm kinda disappointed. We may cut the trip short and catch Boone or Blowing Rock on the way home. Maybe those are nicer?

It can be crowded but not quite as bad as it is closer to the holidays.

October can be busy, but it's not nearly as bad as November and December. Hope that helps, enjoy your trip! :)

Weekends are always busy during the leaf peepers season, but from my experience during the week is very manageable. Learning the alternate routes around the main streets really helps also.

It can be, but keep an eye out for the Rod Runs car show and try to avoid those days (unless you're in town for the show of course!) This year it's Sep 14-16, 2023
