Dry washing gravel to get gold - How much? What percentage of the gold will be recovered?

- The best way to process dry gravel is with a dry washer, also known as an air jig or dry blower. The dry washer allows for the processing of gravels at a much faster rate than possible by winnowing or dry panning, and is far more efficient at collecting the gold. The dry washer is basically designed to be a short, water less sluice, where pulsations of air coming up through a porous cloth medium take the place of flowing water. The vibrations and flow of air replace the function of water in the normal sluice, allowing the gold to settle downward and be caught. They are small enough to be moved around by a lone prospector, inexpensive, and easy to use, but as with all dry placer methods, a large percentage of very fine gold is lost. The dry washer does not recover gold quite as well as a wet process like the trommel or power sluice, but in many locations there is simply no water available to run a trommel, and in those areas a dry washer can be an excellent choice.
For those who want to learn more about Prospecting and finding gold check out my book, Fists full of Gold. It’s an encyclopedia of everything on the topic of prospecting. It’s available on from High Plains Prospectors. (Affiliate) You can find it at:

I used to dry clean. However, now I'm going to dry wahing. 😎 Seriously, I've had the rare opportunity to find many gems and precious metals all over the lower 48. Your book and videos have been my #1 source for results. 👍
Thanks so much brother. Best of luck to you.
I love the 33:57 “and NO, you’re NOT gonna get wet”…. You’re subtle but some of us got it. LOL
I tried to make it subtle.
I was going to say that
I think i would like these puffer sluices. A lot quieter, and if the battery were to die, I assume hand cranking is possible too.
Hand cranking is possible but I always bring a spare battery.
Nice chris great info was using mine yesterday I love thouse puffers going to run my cons today
Dry washing can be fun.
Its another step and piece of equipment to pack out, but how about running the material through a trommel?
A trimmel would classify the material knocking gold off dirt and rocks, the drywasher should perform better with classified material.
Yes, that would help, but as you say a lot more equipment to pack and also a trommel would make like 10 times the dust of the drywasher because you are rolling the dirt in the trommel.
and so it begins !!!!!!
Hope you are doing well. Was out this weekend in the desert, and made a nice find of quartz gold at a central Nevada hard rock gold district - future video on that one.
@@ChrisRalph COOOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pode me ensinar a fazer uma drywasher?
I appreciate your interest, but I do not offer any services for personal training, consulting or advisement. I have many business and family commitments and simply don't have the time available. I do wish you the best of luck, but I am sorry that I cannot offer any help on that level.
Very interesting, dear friend. 19:44
Thank you very much

Glad it was helpful!
Hi Chris ....love that area.....we always love going out there on our way to VC ... some good looking Shiney ...wonder what the vein assays out for that to be coming off of it ..... and no ....you're not gonna get wet hahahaha ...had to say it
Hey how is it going, Jeff? Thanks for stopping in to comment. VC is a great area with such amazing history - and the mineralization covers such a large area. I worked underground on the Comstock lode back in the 1980s! I'd love to do a collab with you one of these days when you are in the VC area - it would be a lot of fun.
...But you're gonna get dirty!
@@ChrisRalph you betcha my brother ....next we are up that way we will give you a shout out and see if we can Collab on a fantastic adventure....
I'm curious to know if there is a reason to not use some larger equipment to speed up the process and make the hard work easier. That looked like a good amount of gold for a small amount of material. Is the majority of the gold nestled in the bedrock or spread out in the dirt?
Bigger equipment is heavier, more expensive, more work to set up at the site.
One word….. sampling, dry washers are great for sampling to determine if it’s worth bringing in equipment and the permitting that goes along with it.
A small generator and hammer drill will break apart that kind of rocky soil a whole lot faster and easier than a pick. I have a 800w generator that only weighs 22 lbs., it runs a 8 amp SDS hammer drill well, so the package is pretty portable. I really don't mind exercise, but I prefer to get as much gold as possible for the amount of work I do.
The generator may weigh 22 lbs, but you need fuel, the hammer drill, bits, etc. If that ground was more cemented, that would make sense. But it was not that cemented, it was not difficult to work by pick. Its a choice, in some places a hammer drill would be necessary.
havent done much dry washing ,its rained so much in california ,really screwed everything up as far as prospecting goes. ,be to hot to go look for gold ,been fun learning my nox 900 and all 3 coils. ,15" 11" 6" ,the guy gave up. sold it to me $750. (craigslist). learning when and why you use different coils is interesting. got the 15" coil off ebay. $160. have a good day. boss
Sounds like you are having fun learning the ins and outs of your new NOX 900. A really good buy on a good detector.
@@ChrisRalph so far. coins trash. 2 junk earrings and a stainless necklace. ordered a gearslinger pack carry the coils with me. 👍👍. see how things work out. ,c'mon 1933 st gauden double eagle. 🤣. or the above mentioned. have a good day.
That's a steal
I was starting to wonder what happened to you. I'm glad to see you well and healthy. I was getting a little worried
I missed the first week because I was sick, I'm fine now. I was out this weekend prospecting and made a nice find of quartz gold at a central Nevada gold district - future video on that one. Had no signal when I was prospecting, but put up this video as soon as I got back to where I had a signal on Sunday morning.
👍👍👍👍
Glad it was helpful!
Well dry washing in Northern Nevada? Thought you had all the water..
Based in Vegas dry digg'n is all I'm setup for. Trying different methods using vacuum and blower. I'll take it Tonopah area. Always gett'n gold there, even micro fines.
I wanted to ask what do you figure is a good prospecting club here in Vegas?
We have more water than southern Nevada but its like saying a guy who has a teaspoon of water has more than a guy who has two drops. The Vegas GPAA club is a good one.
Sorry for calling you Jeff there a few vids back lol thanks Chris
No worries - I've made worse mistakes!
To bad you couldn't wear a dust mask
I knew the spot where you were dry washing by the view. Comstock gold.
Its in that general area.
Second question: I finally found a unclaimed small hydraulic pit but got skunked... just generally what areas of hydraulic pits do you focus on? I detected the walls for a while but that was difficult work. Then I detected the gullies where the sluice likely was but that was full of trash. Finally I just wandered the main part of the pit but nothing still, it seemed they did not wash all the way to bedrock (I found the bedrock later next to two adits, I figure they were drift mines not on the map). But the majority of the pit was about 20 feet above bedrock. Sorry that was a lot but generally is the gullies/sluice area or just the majority of the pit you detect, even if not down to bedrock? Thanks, and sorry for all the questions, its just my nature.
Really hard to say without seeing things with my own eyes, I've found pretty much all my pit gold on or very near bedrock.
“If you’re doing fine gold, you wanna take it easy”… and that my friends is the difference between a TH-cam Prospector and a real Prospector. So many people were irate with me on the GPAA Facebook page when I said he was a real prospector, saying “I put them all down” (snowflakes) I rest my case.
Even the musical group, The Eagles " knew that. 😁
Thanks for the kind words, hope you are well. Was out this weekend and made a nice find of quartz gold at a central Nevada gold district - future video on that one.
@@ChrisRalphNice…. You making your way down to Tonop or Gold Field are ya, don’t come too far south or I’ll make ya come detect out at Lost Basin 😉
Great vedio our teacher...if you please,,we need a lecture about topographic maps where is the gold ???
health & wealth
Hard to just look at just a topographic map and know where the gold will be without a lot more information.
Chris, is there a good method for recovering flour gold?
I did a video on the Secrets of Fine Gold Recovery. Take a look at this: th-cam.com/video/G3fV0hN8V00/w-d-xo.html
I have Scoop Away buckets too. LOL ! Nothing beats dry washing for getting dirty. Love the dust ! Living like the old-timers. Haha ! I think it's the thrill of discovery which makes it exciting. Thanks for explaining all the details and issues about it. It's a great prospecting tool. Beautiful scenery out there. Great day for hunting shiny ! Can't wait to see your sluice results in the next video !
Thanks. I like dry washing, my wife hates the dirty clothes. It really is a great prospecting tool. Hope you are doing well.
Very nice! Please say hello to Alex for me.
Thanks. I will mention it to Alex.
@@ChrisRalph thank you, he’s a local hero of mine 🙏🏼
