Picking an Architect

What critieria should you use to decide on an architect? If can be a challenging topic. They have control over so much of the building project, timeline, design, and will have influence on so many outcomes of the process. Choosing the right architect is going to be very important.

Thanks so much for this, perfect timing. Slightly terrifying, though. Wife and I just closed on land for the dream retirement house, which is 12 hours from current home. It sounds like finding the right architect around here would have been challenging enough, since neither of us has ever built before. Doing so remotely is gonna be a lift, but we’ve got a couple of years to figure it out. Know any good builders or architects in Virginia? 😂😅

Reached out to a few folks already, and everyone seems nice and I'm sure totally competent, but I really want to do high performance, and I'm hearing stuff like "well, code is..." and "5 ACH 50...," which gets me nervous.

Sorry, don’t know anyone in the area. Find a HERS rater of BPI professional in the area and inquire with them who is building the best homes in the market, they will know.

As an engineer, i like working with the architect and builder to find the most effective solution for all involved.

What's your thoughts on a lot of architecture schools not even teaching residential design and construction methods? It seems most nowadays are big commercial work, and know very little about how houses go together.

Its a shame but I understand that there is very little money in residential compared to commercial nowadays. They go where the money is.
