Looking at the first longline sets using the clam flesh, the leaders used are like just 20 pounds, so definitely they for catching smaller fish. The second sets on the boat setting out, material used as leaders was at least 80 lbs, thus for catching large fish like bass and groupers. Normally longlines are for bottom feeding fish, although some are set out to float mid-water. Some even are set vertically. People have died when while using longlines when hooked and dragged into the sea while retrieving or setting out the lines. The boat 18 footer isn't small, good for 2-3 operators, quite safe as it is fitted with outriggers, easily and safely used in up to sea state 3 water. You must understand and used the weather and read the sea to your advantage. These are seasoned fishermen, they know the ocean like the back if their hands. You wanna build a longer and bigger boat, doesn't guarantee you're safer at sea dude.
They use floats on the lines in florida , not on the bottom or even mid depth, the water is well over a hundred feet deep where they use it in florida and miles long . They get sword fish ,mahi mahi , what ever bites . But that is florida. I love sport fishing when a i catch fish . ;) I have had 2 18 foot boats ,one 21 foot boat ,one 23 foot boat the 23 foot can handle much bigger waves than a 18 footer , safer and more comfortable , uses alot more gas too . These Philippine "boats" are canoes with outriggers . But less water friction , more gas efficient .
thanks for sharing, thanks for answering my questions on malls. I've talked to you a while back, I'd like to come rent one of your previous rentals. Hey, the first one you rented that was not across the road from the water, was that a good area? I would rather live across from the water in the last rental, but it sounds like those people moved back. right now i cannot travel of course, maybe next year I'll have one of my houses sold and be more free to live in the PI. I am in Oregon, i do have a couple rentals still (not easily sold) but i am hoping i don't have major problems every year to have to fly back. but if i do, summer in Oregon is awesome. Winters in Oregon is a great time to be in the PI. I've mostly been in Paranaque (nice area near Manila airport, not the stupid makati quezon pasay) and I've been to bohol, dumaguete panglao ,northern Luzon. Some of Mindenao , Camiguin. I like the high cool areas, but I'm thinking if I'm close to the water it should also be cool with the ocean breeze. I do want a veggie garden or access to good produce. And a place to swim daily.
Yes the beach is nice and there is usually a good breeze there, you want shade too so trees are important or a covered patio and for me aircon is a must have for sleeping.
@@myparadiseonbantayanisland9030 yes i fully agree. airocon for sure, and trees shading the roof and the west wall for sure. I've looked at many places and said "NO" and YES for that reason, even just for renting. Are there trees that grow fast, or maybe just palm trees to buy that are 15 ft tall?
@@surveyguyor8958 yes we have what are sometimes called mint trees and they grow fast also there is a tree that in the US we called a mimosa and it grows very fast too. Not too many coconut trees grow fast (1 year or 2) and produce shade, they usually take 5 years or more. You can buy decorative palms like lubi lubi and if mature then they produce shade quickly
My Paradise on Bantayan Island, Cebu, Philippines Thank you for letting me know! Satisfied my curiosity! Have fun with your new boat when it's ready! Hopefully not too much longer! Can't wait to see it in your future videos!
You can have a regular fishing boat built with a 16 foot hull for about 40,000 pesos ($800.00) with a 9 hp diesel that will get you just about anywhere you want to go.
love the vid, i'm a fisherman here in the uk, live in Cebu part time with mrs n kids, my business is fishing (tackle n bait store), may I ask you what ur paying for the 24ft dugout.i'd like an idea as I myself want one, at the moment the one I have is just to small and I look silly in it lol
steve powell just the dugout part is 9,000pesos. then you have to have the boat built. if you go standard Filipino style with the bare necessities maybe 40,000pesos. Mine will not be Filipino style it will be a hybridized boat with dugouts for both outriggers and twin hi speed diesel engines hopefully with transmissions and electric start and many other western boat amenities if all goes as planned.
we have that in common then !!, I'll be back in November maybe I can take a ride up to ur area and hopefully have a day or night fishing expedition. will you be using a long line method or rod and reel, if ur targeting tuna what size hooks will u use, and what size for tanikie, what methods will you try out as i'd love to know your ideas. tight lines fella.
First I have to get my boat built - I use rod and reel, however I have been fishing (trolling) twice in the Philippines and just as a passenger on a boat that was was picking up fish traps "Deadliest Catch Philippines" video and another time on a checkout cruise - "The Big Boat Tour" video, neither boat went to the right place to actually catch (big) fish but I needed to find out something about fishing here. When my boat is built I will have to learn how and where to catch fish here in the Philippines. When trolling I will use tuna feathers and jet heads like I used in the US for Tuna and Dorado I had a boat in San Diego, California and did a lot of shark fishing (mako and thresher) and when the waters warmed up I would go after albacore and yellowfin tuna and dorado. I will also do some jigging and bait fishing once I learn where to go. I will mainly target as big a fish as I can get (wishful thinking). I talk to the local fishermen to get some info on where to troll and there is a place called "The Highway" and there you can get some pretty big Tanigue/wahoo. Tuna shows up here randomly and giant trevally are caught off the reefs.
Interesting & informative. Alot to be learnt from subsistence fishermen. But dude... Im left wondering how they set their lines and what they catchin ??
nat fiji they chatch just about every type if fish in their part of the ocean from skipjack tuna to wahoo/tanigue, lipte, giant traville, cobia, the list goes on and on.
Messiah 7Chef Yes there are a few uses for the clan shells. 1. weed control they put the all over their yard or driveway just like gravel to keep the weeds down and to keep things from getting muddy. 2. They are made of calcium so they are sold for the minerals. 3. I'm sure there are more uses however I will have to ask my friend her father is a scallop and clam fisherman and he has MOUNTAINS of shells. He sells them for about 30 pesos (60 cents USD) for a large (50 kilo) chicken feed bag full of shells.
sigh I still don't understand how they would use those sand to avoid tangle. Seeing all those mono line is just making headache. Sigh but job though that they muster tangle free.
first time q nkakita ug palangri long line. litob paon... kinsay nka try amahong or tahong. pwede bana boss ipaon amahong daghan man gud sa amohong try unta nq.. mga boss.
Betcha they don't have by catch , they eat everything.. after this long line is set how long has it stretched out .. a mile ??? How many of these long lines are in this village???

Im a fisherman too,but first time i heard that a clam can be used as a bait..
I used mussels from the pier beams and rock jettys in San Diego to catch many fish there.

Longline fishing (kitang)
How much is your boat going to cost? Thanks! Good luck with everything!
Ryan Chow maybe in the 70,000 peso range, however depending on the cost of the engines it could be more. In USD about $1700.00

Wondering if there is a duel purpose for the clam shells?

It keeps the wind from blowing the line and making a mess.
It's not a Costco, it's casco (kasko in Tagalog) a Spanish word means empty body

Sure blood clams are ok for longline, other fishermen may use their favorite bait too.
