FSX: Basic (But Complete) ILS Landing Tutorial

  • Thanks for making this the most popular ILS tutorial on TH-cam. This amateur tutorial teaches you how to perform an ILS landing in FSX. Remember that this is a basic tutorial, and there's much more to ILS Landings than what I demonstrate in the video. Also, please note that autoland is NOT the same thing as the ILS. Many people seem to make ILS synonymous with autoland. (You'll even hear me say it in the video several times, back when I too, thought it was the same thing.) Autoland is a supplemental system that takes care of everything for you during the landing. (It flares, lands the plane, and even controls the throttle.) **FSX does NOT have an autoland feature** This means you must disengage the autopilot before touching down, and then land the plane manually.

    FINALLY a useful ILS tutorial. I normally descend and land manually with all planes, but I'm garbage with the 747 so I'll apply what I learned here. I'm sure there's not too many differences between the two's ILS. Thanks a lot for the help.

    You're using the same joystick as me. It works decently enough for most things for me. I would love to get the Saitek Yoke, Throttle and Rudder Pedals set up I have seen advertised. That setup looks sweet! Just wanted to thank you for your informative video. I have been a Flight Simmer for years and never have been able to figure out NAV Hold and APP Hold and this really cleared it up for me. Thanks again and keep up the great vids. :-)

    Hello again !
    I think I finally got it under control to land the plane at a low speed, by disengage the autothrottle earlier, so I can correct the speed if necessary, I also use my flaps so I get lift. Only one thing remains, I don't ALWAYS land perfectly on the centerline, sometimes I do, sometimes I don't, I don't know what I am doing wrong but still I want to thank you, Thanks to your great tutorial I know how to make ( not perfect yet) an ILS landing !!

    good tutorial. one thing that will help further is either downloading or writing down the destination airport's info (ILS frequencies, Runway headings and altitudes) before taking off. You can even take it a step further for realism and compile the info on alternate airports should an in flight emergency occur.

    Arming spoilers is pulling the speed brake lever to "Arm" (key command is SHIFT+/) which causes it to automatically deploy upon landing. Autobrake settings control the amount of brakes applied upon landing automatically.

    Once this begins, bank right/left according to how far off the Localizer you are and descend/climb according to how far off the glide slope you are. Make sure both pink dots are lined up in there center. Bank no more than 10 degrees and descend/climb no more than 800 fpm. You always want to descend about 600-800fpm and have your gear down only when the glide slope meter shows movement. Hope this helps!XD

    I always have the altitude hold on, because before I start the ILS approach, I'm cruising. And yes, I just recently learned to use NAV to get the horizontal and then set the approach at G/S interception. I take the autopilot off 100 feet out to prepare the flare and pull the throttle back.

    The glide slope is located on the FMC (That little blue and brown box) and appears as a vertical row of diamonds. The Localizer is located under that on the same screen as a horizantal row of Diamonds. You MUST be tuned to the correct frequency of the ILS runway in the Nav1 radio.

    Also, if you look at the ILS heading, on the map view, which was 161 on this vid, and then you can punch that in to the ILS couse on the left of the autopilot panel.
    Thanks

  • @boxkites
    @boxkites 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can also use your GPS to tune your ils freq in to your radio stack.That will save you opening the map to read the ILS freq plus heading. Hope that helps.

    I don't think NAV hold will follow the glideslope, only the localizer. It also tracks a VOR course if you navigate using VOR. Also, if you have a flight plan set, after switching the NAV/GPS switch to GPS, NAV hold will follow the route (the pink line).

    Same issue dude, i think its all about balancing between speed and descending rate, the problem is when you have flaps all the way down for landing its really hard to increase altitude.
    Personally i think you should line up with the run way a bit far from the runway and try different approaches, like try with different approach speed and descending rates.. im pretty sure that should work

  • @StigsCanadianCousin

    Well done - great explanation and well-made video. If you're not a real pilot by now, you will be soon. This really demonstrates how flying has become more like computer programming - I usually shoot the ILS approaches manually, but you wouldn't want to be my passenger - HA HA!

  • @gaspita
    @gaspita 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    the heading is the number that you have tu put into the CRS ( Course) for example in this case was 161, you can easily find the CRS of runeway if you dont know this was the runeway 16L so the CRS is 161 if the runeway is 05R the CRS will be 50, now junts find the CRS and change the value, its like the Heading (HDG) botton i hope this helps =)

    Line up with the middle of the green looking feather and make sure your at the right intercepting altitude (2300 feet is good) and your altimeter needs to be set correctly also(Press B). There should be a pink dot for the Glide slope AND the localizer and they should be oving close to their center.

  • @RixceU
    @RixceU 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Necrommancer:
    The automated ILS approach is what this video shows you how to do ;-)
    With the correct ILS frequency in the Nav radio, the localizer and glideslope indicators will appear on the PFD (the pink diamonds) as you are near the runway. Basically, the APP hold on the autopilot will automatically follow the ILS. Otherwise, you can manually fly the ILS too (basically go where the pink diamonds are--if the localizer index moves to the right, you need to turn slightly right).

    Yes, go to assignments, select engine commands, the engine auto shutdown line, that's what you need. By default the function is blank I think, I put mine Shift + X. Then Ctrl + E for the engines to start again.

  • @huntylayd

    ultramssr the reason is alt hold means attitude hold. if you are using a keyboard you have set the pitch and need to reduce it. if you are using a joystick the quickly counteract the sudden movement :) hope I helped :)

    @JoWetter 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmm, it's quite simple.
    1. Correct NAV-freq. And Nav1 activated (on the radio it's buttons like com1/com2, nav1/nav2 etc, nav1 should be illuminated)
    2. Follow the heading/altitude instructions from ATC so you come straight into the localizer.
    3. When you are close to the localizer, press VOR LOC, and when the localizer is stablished, switch to APP. The computer will turn off the ALT-holder when you are correct in glideslope.

    keep in mind that it is not autoland, just ILS. Generally ILS just shows the pilot where to fly. This video shows also, that the autopilot can interpretate the ILS informations. But because FSX doesn´t support autoland, just automatic approaches, you have to disengage the autopilot before touchdown and also flare yourself.

    @airplanecrazy1989 Those lights are the audio panel. When you first tune the ILS frequency you want to make sure that the ILS is not broken so you do turn on that light because when you hit the button to turn on that light it makes it so you can listen to the ILS frequency to check for the correct morse code. After you verify that the ILS is working and has the correct morse code you can stop listening (and then that light will be off to indicate that you stopped listening (monitoring) it.

    @williammcgradey Instrument Landing System. It gives lateral guidance with the Localizer and vertical guidance with the Glideslope. Tune the frequency on your nav 1 radio and make sure your NAV/GPS switch is set to Nav.

  • @StratMatt777
    @StratMatt777 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @fakh94 The autopilot heading doesn't matter when APR or NAV mode is active because the autopilot is following the needle and ignoring the heading that is set because you have APR or NAV active instead of HDG. The important setting is the course setting- CRS.

  • @StratMatt777
    @StratMatt777 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Tranzorr A standard (most are) 3 degree glideslope goes up 300' per mile. 1 mile out it is at 300' above the touchdown elevation, 5 miles out it is at 1,500', 10 miles: 3,000', 15 miles: 4,500', 20 miles: 6,000', 30 miles: 9,000. 300' per mile which is 3,000' per 10 miles.
