I grew up in Ireland with tales of the Tuatha De Danann and have been fascinated by them since early childhood, so obsessed I was that I once went to sleep under a fairy tree hoping to glimpse into their world. When I discovered Tolkien I saw the same angelic otherworldly beings in his elves and fell in love with his books. Thank you for mentioning our beloved Tuatha De Danann ✨

For reference, Arwen's 'cap' is a carrea (in English 'tressure'), and was common for Eldarin women to wear.
Tolkien, when discussing the meaning of the name Gilraen* wrote:
"It meant ‘one adorned with a tressure set with small gems in its network', such as the tressure of Arwen described in L.R. I 239. ...The women of the Eldar were accustomed to wear such treasures [sic**]; but among other peoples they were used only by women of high rank among the "Rangers", descendants of Elros, as they claimed."
VT 42, The Rivers and Beacon-hills of Gondor
*Etymologically, -raen comes from the Common Eldarin base RAY (net, knit, lace), but is used only for work involving one thread.
**"treasure" here is an editorial typo, should read "tressure".

Thank you so much for this insightful yet, to most people, niche info. It took me a few tries to get Google to find anything about this terminology, so I think it is fairly uncommonly searched. (By the way, what language is carrea?) The best source I found was The One Ring Forums in which Hammond and Scull’s LOTR Reader’s Companion was referenced a lot, pulling together Tolkien lore from many sources to form cohesive ties and insights. Also mentioned in Vinyar Tengwar 42, Tolkien used the word "tressure" as a translation of the French "tressour" while working on his translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. So, no wonder this word is rare and hard to find. I don't know if other English speakers coined it before him, but certainly few have used it.
Anyway, image search results I got for tressure are mostly the metallic thread nets covering two buns (kind of like Princess Leia buns), one on either side of the head. Sometimes the net covers the hair in one big, gathered clump of hair on the back of the head or sometimes it sheathes the hair in a sleeve open at the bottom. And there is usually a band of some sort (maybe even a chin strap at the bottom) holding it together around the head's circumference, which would correspond well with the line about Arwen's brow being bound with gems. And frequently there are gauzy veils involved.
Judging from Tolkien's use of this one, specific word from dress history, I now can't help but imagine a dress style similar to that of 14th century Britain or France. I know the stories the chivalric/Arthurian chansons and epic poems are drawing from are much older than the Medieval period in which they were written; thus historical dress recreations from those distant time periods makes total sense. However, the fact that Tolkien chose to use that term tressour/tressure, drawn from that specific context, makes me wonder if his mental image of Arwen's dress was closer to Medieval styles than to pre-Christian styles. Unless he didn't conceive of tressure as a period-specific term but more a general term for an ornate, possibly bejeweled, hairnet.

@@yumeironeko The word _carrëa_ is Quenya. The Sindarin form would be _cathrae_ .
The derivation is from the roots √KAS (head) and √RAY (net, lace).

a big problem with how you speak of the Tuatha de Danann is that it is as if they were a real people, when it is clear that they weren't, and that they are actually euhemerized gods.
This is very clear from the fact that other celtic traditions have similar figures to many of the Tuatha De Danann despite not having ever lived in Ireland, such as Welsh Lleu Llaw Gyffes "Lleu of the skillful hand" who is very likely the same as Lugh Lamhfada "Lugh of the long hand" which also likely the same as more ancient Gaulish and Celtiberian Lugus. Even Danu is thought to be a goddess who was the origin of the name of the Danube river, and a slavic variant of her is the origin of the name of the river Don.

Dear Jess in polkadots, I dig how the costume came out. Maybe a head doily isn't so far off. I mean, how different is that from a veil? It's a delight to hear you talk about myths and the hidden meanings of things. I'd heard of the Tuatha de Danann in the past, but somehow hearing you talk about how the conquerors "made a deal for the Tuatha de Danann to live in the underworld" made me think "they sleep with the fishes now." I'm imagining Celtic grandparent's telling the grandkids that if they don't behave they'll be "sent to live with the faires." And the kids, not getting the implied threat, frowning and thinking grandad's gone rotten in the head. I could tell you some whoppers my grandma told me... but not today.
