i haven't seen it but the idea of a grown woman being made to play a bashful, blushing, shy and 'innocent' 14 year old gives really weird vibes
Not to make it weirder, but they also put her in a skirt that was clearly supposed to be "school girl" but was just...DEFINITELY too short to be an actual school uniform. Lol. I think the character is typically more conservatively dressed in the comics, too, so it wasn't like it was for accuracy. And listen, I'm actually not a prude about this type of thing, women can totally be portrayed as sexy, I just thought the way that Sweeney was playing the character all bashful and naive made the character have such an off-putting vibe.
Edit: LMAO I'm dumb and too quick to comment, because I literally just got to the point in the video where Trin points this out.

Yeah. It’s basically like one of those late 90s/early 2000s teen movies, and also those CW teen and superhero shows, where they have 25-30 year old actors playing 14-18 year olds in high school.

Madam web was supposed to protect Peter Parker's (Tom holland's Peter) mom from being assassinated (because this villain traveled back in time to kill her and stop Peter from being born). But midway through production - once Dakota was signed already - they kept making changes to the story until it became this mess.
(supposedly) Dakota had only two options, either finish the movie or cancel the contract and pay the contract break fine - which tend to be millionaire amounts
This movie should have focused on the three Spiderwomen, and actually showed them becoming the heroes they were destined to become. Instead, they were running away for most of the movie, and sidelined, which is a shame, because Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor and Isabela Merced had great chemistry and appeal.

The fact they had sm talent behind this movie but somehow managed to make it awful is so wild. Like I feel bad for the actors at this point bc their careers are stained by this movie they have this mess on their resume.

Dakota Johnson sounded so unserious about everything, even in the movie.
Apparently, the actors were under the impression that this movie was part of the Marvel universe and even tagged Marvel in their movie posts (Their posts were deleted later). I think they assumed the script would be good since its MCU.
Mcu scripts are also terrible. The only reason we thought they were good is because we were preteens and stupid😭
@baskasboominbrows6704 I know what you mean, but it is a big franchise and most actors would be eager to be a part of the MCU, so thats why I think they accepted this script.

Ellen was shorter to film and ultimately made a lot of people like her for exposing Ellen so I think her answer would be pretty clear cut I think.
@@cherrybombrose3532I have seen literally no one talking badly about Dakota beyond some people saying her acting here is bad. But everyone's acting is bad here and they are not all bad actors so it's clearly the directors fault.
Dakota is also clearly done with this project and a lot of these actors seem to have been hired by low-key tricking them into thinking they would be in a Marvel movie. Their promotional posts tagged Marvel not Sony. She's done a lot of interviews saying the movie sucks basically so I've only seen people calling her humble and self aware.

maybe they did have AI write the script and the actors knew and disapproved and that’s why they didn’t try very hard
Apparently there was a better version and that's the one they signed up for but there was a lot of intervention so the script changed dramatically. I assume it was too late to back out since they had already been filming and signed contracts. So they probably gave up around that time.
It was incredibly awkward for them to dance around actually saying Peter or May's names. Surely there was a better way to get around this than Ben inexplicably refusing to tell Cassie the name of his new girlfriend?

so.... a spider bite can cure a terminally ill fetus but not a gunshot wound? I've seen Spiderman fall off a 500 ft skyscraper, land on the concrete, and hop back up like it was all in good fun, meanwhile, back in the Amazon, a single gunshot wound is taking out a mother who has also been treated with magical spider DNA. make it make sense
The infamous One More Day storyline taught us that bullet wounds are incurable unless you make a literal deal with the devil. Nothing and no one else Spider-Man knows, from Reed Richards to Dr Strange, can fix a gunshot wound. Apparently.
i mean it is a different kind of spider, the one that bit spiderman has been genetically modified and is radioactive in some versions, where as the spider that bit her mom is just a super rare kind in peru i guess
I loved the movie, legitimately it was just a ton of fun for me, partially because of how bad it is. My biggest laugh came during a 'serious scene'.
The bad guy is beginning to harm the NSA/CIA/WTFE agent woman. He grabs her arm black begins to fill her veins as she begins to weaken. Instead of 'what is that?' or 'what are you doing to me?' The agent asks "How are you poisoning me?"; and sure, she's not wrong, but the leap in logic from 'ow, the arm he is squeezing hurts' to 'he must be poisoning me...how?' is so funny.
after being asked "how are you poisoning me?" the villain says he is poisoning her.
It's just *mwah* perfect cinema, the acting, the writing, it's all so beautiful.

I went to see it on Valentine’s Day and my audience bonded over laughing at the unintentionally hilarious parts. Dakota’s line readings in some of those scenes were rough; even she knew it was horrible. I guess I can stan a self aware queen 🤷

I remember rumors back then that the plot of the movie is that Madame Web was going to protect Mary Parker played by Emma Roberts from a villain before we found out it was Ezekiel who wants to kill spiderman mom before he's even born. Given that Dakota said that they keep changing the script that must of been the original plot for the flim.

The best thing I could say to synopsize the movie is... it seems like an A-list cast got shoved into a jr. high school production and the director left on maternity leave the 2nd week of rehearsals.

When I first saw the commercial for it I assumed it was gonna air on the CW or something and was shocked when it said it was a movie
you're so right about sydney's character ! i was so disappointed because i went into this excited to see something sydney sweeney wasn't being sexualized and objectified in, and then they make her this stereotypical schoolgirl that the men who watch this movie will probably fetishize.
She actually got hit by one of the fireworks while in the water and it made me cackle, it was such a weird choice for her losing her vision

I just finished watching this movie with my twin and we can’t stop quoting the end “kung pow chicken is fine” “how did you know?” Also I LITERALLY said as soon as it ended it felt like 3 separate stories so I’m glad I’m not alone on that thought lol
the way they couldn’t just have the man repeat his lines… Like millions of dollars into this movie and u couldn’t have the man redo his lines …. TRASH

I liked this movie, because it reminded me of my mom. She was researching spiders in the Amazon, right before she died
I was skeptical of the low reviews because there are some groups online who dedicate wayyyy too much time review bombing any movies/shows with women as superhero, movies/shows that are really anti nazi (happened to Hunters), and any lgbt related movies/shows. Sounds like this one is genuinely rough, though… Studios need to chill with the superhero comic movies. We’re all sick of it.

An industry insider had said that all sequels were cancelled due to the poor box office and critical reception.
Gonna be real but even her acting was just...whatever. I haven't seen her in much so maybe it was more the script than her but just everything was not good

I’ve been seeing mixed reviews about this movie, and this was my highly highly anticipated movie of this year, I mean Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabella Monor!!!

Saw it in theaters… I have never fallen asleep watching a movie at a theater before then…
My best friend and I went to see it and I was just so confused. Like you said it feels like so much was just left out so it was honestly laughable. A drinking game where you 1.) Drink every time Cassie yells at someone unprompted or 2.) Drink whenever a new character appears with very little or no explanation. Also her whole power of being able to be in multiple places at once? It could've been so cool but she used it once and it was incredibly anticlimactic. Like her physical body just stands there unprotected? She can't use her physical body while controlling the others? Idk it could've been great but it wasn't. No hate to the actors tho they did what they could with what they were given.
I love this movie. I find it so funny, and like you said, very campy. I actually saw it twice in theatres, willingly, and had a blast both times. A lot of the acting is very poorly done, with bad line delivery, but it made my friends and I laugh. Dakota is naturally very charming (and who doesn't love Sydney Sweeney?), so I totally see this reaching cult classic status in the years to come. Is it a good movie? No. Hell no. However, it's super fun to watch with friends.

There’s no way the script for this movie was written by professional script writers. This was thrown together by the studio and they probably used AI to do it. A shining example of how AI cannot replace the talent, skill and experience of good script writers. The visuals were cool the writing was meh.

The plot has so much potential but the execution was just so funky. The acting from everyone was atrocious imo and I felt there was no motion in their performance..like no sense of urgency when they’re about to be killed…🌚🌚and I knew that there was something off about the villains dialogue ☠️

I watched Madame Web via CAM Version & this is the worst Superhero & Comic Book Movie that I've ever seen in my life. I feel terrible for a lot of the actors involved, because none of them deserve to have this movie in their filmography. Sony Pictures should be ashamed of themselves for making this movie & at this point Kevin Fiege & Marvel Studios need to take the Spider-Man rights away from Sony, because they clearly can't handle having Spider-Man or any Superhero at all.

This movie literally only got made because Amy Pascal, at Sony, wanted an all-female "girl boss" movie back in 2014 connected to Spider-Man. That's it.
The script was actually bought as a failed script from a DC franchise, Birds of Prey (not the one that got released) and was reworked into being a Marvel property using Marvel characters.
The director ordered several rewrites, including setting it in 2003 literally only to use the song Toxic in the movie (which actually came out in 2004) and cause she was nostalgic about her 30s; she said this in a Forbes website puff piece.
The movie was likely edited to hell and back, with several major scenes cut out; Dakota Johnson even admitted the script changed so much, it was unrecognizable.
This review was more enjoyable than the actual movie.

I personally think this movie is a piece of satire. "We aren't allowed to use the names Peter Parker or May, so we're going to make fun of the fact we can't say it!" "Of COURSE the villain gets his powers from a essentially a magic spider, what Spider-person hasn't?" "You think just because she's a Spider-man character she has the spider powers? NO!" The scene of Cass & Ben eating take-out on their lunch was all it took to convince me she's just a lesbian afraid of children. This movie is aware that comic books are full of ridiculous concepts & *chooses* to enjoy those concepts. Because if they tried to make a frankly C-list character into a serious high-prestige drama, no one would've cared
It should have been a TV series, would have given enough room to explore each characters and develop the storyline. Everything in the movie feels rushed like they had to fit everything in under 2 hours
