    Just the video I wanted to see - maples and air layers - so thank you! I think the only instant bonsai starts with a credit card, but then when it dies you suffer a lot more. 😂

    SOLID ADVICE, friend……. I, too, have made “less than perfect” air layers that I was damned proud of at the time…….. but eventually thought, I could have done much better with the material. With experience comes wisdom.
    Great video, thanks for sharing. I only wish that I could’ve seen this 5yrs ago!

    Billy and me love doing air layer. Cotoneaster works really well 👌

    so glad I am not the only one who went on an air layer frenzy, during the lockdowns saw so many air layer videos. Why not I said. So glad I was successful but now 2,3 years down the track I wondered why I bothered. The greatest idea is they will have a thicker trunk, I want to have another go this year (our spring is just starting) But I am definitely going to have another go, spent all winter picking out branches to do.

      Better to get your experience through enthuiasm and then do your real selections once you can fully appreciate what you want to achieve. i look forward to hearing your results.

    Hi Xavier, I don't know if you've watched any of their videos, but BonsaiQ channel have a few good ones on layering that you might find interesting. One is on a technique they call double layering. The first layering is done to remove the branch, which doesn't usually result in good roots for use on the finished tree. The second layering is done later on to develop a radial nebari at the preferred point and angle.
    An interesting technique used is a single saw cut around the trunk with a plastic disc inserted tightly into the cut, pulled tight to form a cone. Roots develop above the cone, spreading downward over it.
    Worth a look

      I did try to edit them to under 20 minutes but i really struggle - I think I am sticking with the 25 - 30 minute style.

    Hi Xavier, enjoyed this episode and decided probably not to start an airlayer again 😂 Just found out the cause of struggling and death of some of my trees. 😨 I have to go back to education and learn the proper repotting… 🫣 Enjoy your day 😘 Cheers 🙋‍♀️ Martina

    Mate that trpublesome maple.. Tilt 15 degrees and turn that lowest branch more horizontal, you can built the rest of the tree quite easily.
    Ohw yeah.. Airlayer can certainly make near instant bonsai.
    Already subbed so I cannot add a sub😢

    I choose to air layer as a way to get something while pruning at the same time. I've never had luck with cuttings 1/1000 and im at about a 99%success rate with air layers. Your right it's still not instant but bonsai is never finished anyway

    • @XaviersBonsaiRetreat
      @XaviersBonsaiRetreat  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Very true - I think the point i keep trying to get across is try to optimise the place where you select to place that layer. too many times I have missed the ideal spot by a couple of cm just because I was too eager etc...

    Brilliant!! I actually put off or changed the planned location of my airlayers based on your previous vids. It is so tempting to just get in there and slap an airlayer on - I did not realize that the actual cut site needs careful consideration.
    For your tree at 28:40, may I suggest keeping one branch thinner and a bit lower? This could possibly add some variation to the primary structure. Well, I'm off to plan some airlayers ...

    Have you considered ground layering some of the “too tall” air layers ? Great video! Love playing with free materials

    • @XaviersBonsaiRetreat
      @XaviersBonsaiRetreat  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There are definitely options to rectify this and ground layer is one of them - thanks. My main point in this video was the importance of 'thinking ahead' first to try and optimise the time involved to get it to the bonsai stage :)

    • @XaviersBonsaiRetreat
      @XaviersBonsaiRetreat  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I spoke with both Peter Chan and Corin - neither seemed to think it was a good idea. I know it can be done but it certainly doesnt appear to be effective or that succesful.

    I did lots of air-layer jap maples the year before last and got 100% success. So I thought air-layer those this year to get maximum benefit. Result: 100% failures. Can be a fickle game and you really do have to think ahead about the position don’t you. They do make very attractive garden trees though.

      It's a bit like cuttings. Some years everything takes that you poke in the dirt and other years - when you try to be careful - nothing takes :)
