Bookbinder Daphne Lera, filmed by DOP Kim Batterham with Mark Thomson for the Institute of Backyard Studies (www.ibys.org), supported by the National Museum of Australia.
I love bookbinding and also making small boxes. Not trained except for TH-cam tutorials. It gives me great pleasure to make various books for gifts for friends - sketchbooks, portfolios, notebooks etc. Such a rewarding craft. You are so skilled.
Daphne, what a wonderful film of your work. I never knew that you had trained in this art. It is a pity that my late wife, Elzy is not here to view the film and to remind us of our friendship so many years ago. I have just learnt that you passed away late last year. RIP, I have wonderful memories of you and our friends at the time. Allen B.
I absolutely love bookbinding and I'd love to learn new techniques. I've always wanted to work in a bookbinding/book repair shop but there aren't any around me and I fear it's already died off for the most part since so many people use e-book products.

What a fine, beautiful art with heart.
To me the process feels very therapeutic. When I do it i'm alone with my thoughts.

that is a small fortune in tools. It looked like you didn't use any heat with your foil and the traces were perfect. Very nice job.
What a lovely video! Thank you for posting this
Splendid, perfect work, and so inspiring!
Each book is special because each one is an INDIVIDUAL. :)
...beautiful.. for those who can hear the music...
Just amazing.
Beautiful you have a very beautiful talent!
Could you tell us what the music is at the end? It sounds really nice.
The video is unfortunately too short but I like it very much! What a pity that this is a disappearing art. Where are the apprentices?
I'm at 71 learning this process now. Pandemic and my love of old books got me started.
