The summer of 1986 I was 15 yrs old,I had a1984 cr80..I sold it blown up in a basket and bought a 1984 cr500...I broke every track record around...and actually I probably broke world records jumping the thing over this huge hill ..it was the best bike ever!
Those are some cool memories!!! CR500's are beastly machines - so cool there are still a few around so we can still experience the fury of 500cc's of 2-stroke raw power!
I had an '84 XR500....dual carb and radial valve combustion chamber (finger followers to take the side load off the valves). Honda developed some interesting technology on their bikes back then!
I know what you mean. I always run 112 octane leaded race fuel with Maxima Castor 927 at 32:1 to keep this bike cool in the summer. The head mod was a must as well. Bike doesn’t detonate anymore and I was able to properly jet it. I had a 2009 Honda CRF450R that I recently sold. Between the two the 84 CR500 scares me. It doesn’t have the traction my 450 has, but when it gets traction you feel like you’re getting sling shotted lol it’s fun, but scares you at times. You just can’t beat the smell and the sound either.
Classic Honda CR's are great bikes....I got to ride a very nice 1986 CR250 - that engine would still be fun today! th-cam.com/video/xOWkRyrGk5I/w-d-xo.html
I bought one of these when i was 15 for £350, didnt really know what i was getting into (or maybe more accurately onto!) Anyway, i was probably 10 stone wet through and was blown away by the raw power of the bike! I never held back and used to ride her hard (sometimes 2 up! (Brave friends i had lol)) anyway, absolutely fantastic bike, 84 being the only aircooled cr500, it was not well recieved as a race bike in 1984 due to detonation and various other issues but as an adrenaline fix, it was amazing! Had some later year cr500s but nothing beats the rawness of the 84. Miss mine even though starting it meant i have a knee operation at 25! At 38 now i dont think it will be too long before i end up with another (although it will cost a little more this time!) Currently restoring a 1978 DT400 MX so maybe a 'trade up' when complete? Anyone got any thought's on how the DT will ride? (Non runner when purchased) keep up the 'ring, ping, ping, ding, dinging'!!!
Thanks for the great story on your CR500 history! Amazing bikes! My brother had a 1978 DT400 - yellow with a mono shock and totally street legal. Big torque and ran fairly smooth on the roads. Big flywheel so more like "bum.....bum....bum..." when off throttle (idled at a very low RPM). Enjoy your DT400MX!
This bike does not belong to me and I don't have much experience with 500 smokers but I think about any 500cc's 2-stroke with a 3.5" diameter piston is going to have some detonation issues. Maybe mix in a little race gas with the pump gas as that seems to help
The new 21 CRF450 Works Edition has arrived at the same time as the winter weather here in Ohio. Not sure when I can get the new bike out for the first ride. Might just be riding around the fields at Grear MX if things dry out or freeze up. No way taking that new bike out in the mud!
No kidding I had the same bike in 86 it was a Beast, But it ran best at high RPM'S, So much Fun, Everyone I have seen riding one of these is afraid or doesn't know how to ride a 2 stroke.
That bike is 36 years old and mostly original so I was happy to get a chance to ride it (even gently!). Not many 500cc 2-stroke around and running anymore. Fun bike!

Back in 1998 I almost bought one of these that was super clean. Price was $1200.....I wish I would have. I had an '84 XR500R at the time.

That’s sweet. You need to find an old CZ for your next video.
I know where some are in Ohio so maybe next spring that can happen!
Miss mine!
You are lucky to have owned and experienced a CR500!

You ever have detonation issues?
