The competition where everything started for the French handball! Nobody expected them but they won the bronze medal in Barcelona. These players would also become world champions in 1995 (the first time for a French team in a collective sport).

In March 1990 at World Cup, France celebrated their first Olympic Games qualification, ironically in a 9/10 placement final against same Iceland they would meet in this bronze medal final. Because of the Yugoslav wars, Iceland came in as a late replacement. Against Yugoslavia would have been much harder for France to get the bronze.
