    This makes me very emotional despite never having played the game myself. I had an old roommate back in college who played this and he attempted suicide about two times back then. Once was overdosing and second time he tried to jump off our balcony.
    We had a falling out but I do hope he’s doing better. What’s interesting to me about Dark Souls is that he was so obsessive with this game and I legit didn’t understand at the time. In recent years my bf played the game and explained to me the lore of how the character pretty much does all this to relight a fire to keep the world going, despite it really being all for nothing. And back then when I talked to my roommate about what was going through his head, he asked me, “do you ever feel like you’re just constantly relighting a flame, knowing it will eventually go out, but you keep lighting it anyway just because that’s what you’re supposed to do?” And at the time I was like, “wtf are you on about”...
    I decided to read up on the lore and now everything he said back then makes so much sense. I can’t say a video game ever impacted my life because I’ve only played like 2 or 3 my entire life. But I can totally see why Dark Souls impacts people. It’s a beautifully haunting story that maybe a lot of people can resonate with. Idk if my old roommate has stopped feeling the way he does, but I want to say for those of you who might feel like life is hopeless in the way DS portrays it, think of this way:
    The beauty of life is not in the destination, it is the journey, just as the beauty of this game isn’t about who you fight in the end, it’s about the entire journey of the game to get there. Always remember that, it’s not about igniting a flame just to keep it burning, it’s about enjoying that warmth while it burns.

    • @victorlegarreta3039
      @victorlegarreta3039 4 ปีที่แล้ว +279

      You forgot to mention the Undead curse. Which is basically an allegory for depression. In essence, the more you die, the less of yourself you become - it is only through will, perseverance and a clear goal in mind that you can truly delay the inevitable. When someone dies enough (you can interpret this as taking hits in life: lost of a loved one, financial instability, or anything that can negatively impact someone) the lower you sink and when you give up, you go hollow. You become a mindless undead, seeking souls to satiate a thirst - metaphorically you die. It is the end of the line many people with depression meet. Those without will-power. But the game emphasizes two important things in life.
      Perseverance, fighting onwards and never giving up. Have a goal in mind. Within the game, it's to ring the bells of awakening, find the Lord Souls and Relight the fire (or the other various endings.) in life... Maybe your goal is to become a musician, a model, a professional gamer... Artist, or maybe your ultimate goal is to create a stable family. Whichever it is... Having that goal in mind allows you to strive forward.
      And the second and most important thing is seeking help. Dark Souls is known for it's difficulty. Maybe you cannot defeat a boss, there's a wall in front of you. Well seek help. Other players can help you, or perhaps an NPC like Solaire.
      You do not need to brave the storm alone, you don't have to. Allow others to help you.
      The journey can be grueling, long, unrelenting, but you'll always have someone near you that would love to help.
      Stay safe my dudes, and don't you dare go hollow!

    @Max2ds 4 ปีที่แล้ว +88

    Gwyndolin had a pretty rough life. He had to work from the sidelines, pretending to be a woman the entire time. Once his sister abandoned him, he made an illusion of her in an attempt to maintain order. His father died by the fire he so desperately wished to link, slain by the very undead that would link it once more.
    After all of this pain, he would not die. He would be consumed.
    By a gluttonous zealot by the name of Aldrich; perhaps he was dead, nothing more than a corpse marionette with Aldrich as his puppeteer. Or perhaps he was still alive, fighting off the writhing mass of blackened flesh clinging to his body.
    Either way, his loyalty was betrayed and he was left to die. Until the Ashen One finally comes, putting him out of his misery. Ending the charade, and Aldrich with it. Even going so far as to slay the Nameless Undead that had slain Gwyn.
    Sometimes the hero of our story is the villain of another.

      Gwyn was kingof the gods (much like Zeus), he had a few children, four or five i think, The Nameless king was his firstborn but they had a falling out bc the NK didn't want to genocide dragons. Gwyn had a few other kids; Gwyndolin of the Dark Sun, Gwynevere godess of fertility, Filianore, (and maybe yorshka).
      Gwyn started a religion to keep humans in line (the Way of White). Aldritch was a member of said religion, a low ranking priest. Aldritch became a cannibal and started to grow in mass and power, eventually making himself a saint of the deep (and corrupting his order). Aldritch was forced to link the fire (and become a lord of cinder) because he was mighty, not because he was a good guy. This makes me think deeply about the powerful lore behind each game's tragic story. These games, from dark souls to bloodborne... they just feel so artistic, foreboding, and melancholy. I feel like the artist behind them (miyazaki) really just wanted to nail the point home: that the deep rooted corruption of man is only matched by the kindness of man and his willingness to sacrifice his life for something that is bigger than him. I don't know, maybe I'm just looking to much into it or something and pulling theories outta nowhere. All I know is that I can't wait to dive into Demon's Souls again when it's released on PS5 after all these years.

    • @ashenknight4023

      I see what you mean. Despite the oppressive and melancholic atmosphere of the series, there are moments of kindness that feel more noticeable when paired with the desolate lands you journey through. Whether it's a soup shared with Siegward, a moment of jolly cooperation with Solaire, or even the rare moment of kindness from an invading player, there are some moments of levity that stick with you after all is said and done. These lands may have gone to hell, but the kindness of man isn't dead just yet.

    "And so did the Lord of the Darkmoon, Gwyndolin, barricade himself in his hallowed halls. For he had found out the cruel machinations arrayed against him. His knights, betraying their Lord and master, allowed the creatures of Aldritch past their defenses. The God Eater, was coming. His acolytes were to prepare the Lord for his consumption, like a meal made ready for a feast. Alas, the Lord did not surrender willingly. For strength was yet within him, despite the waning of the years, and the dreadful twilight, which had befallen the world.
    And as they lay siege upon Hallowed Anor Londo, as the former knights watched on indifferently, The Lord of the Darkmoon, made dreadful war upon them. He knew it was folly to resist in this way. It was already over. Yet he would not be overturned, despite the foul whispers of his foes, to become a mere morsel for the Devourer of Gods, the Arch Heretic. Nay. He would resist to the bitter end. And many arrows rained down upon the invaders, like slivers of moonlight, plucked from the dome of the heavens, like a thousands stars falling upon them. Yet they did not relent. For their God, was coming. And Gwyndolin, could hear him arrive.
    Like an avalanche of sludge, a torrent of foul impurity, a wave of the dregs of darkness, He, came. Aldritch. The one, who would devour the last god. Washing away all traces of former majesty of hallowed Anor Londo with his coming, staining the carven walls with the dregs of shadow and foul sorcery. And so, did the God Eater come upon the last god, slithering up the steps like a foul serpent, a monster true incarnate to confront the final, desperate defender of fallen Anor Londo. One bereft of all glory and former majesty, exhausted by constant battle, weakened by the coming of the ages. One new in their strength, power held in madness. Their struggle was brief, yet violent. But Aldritch, in his foul strength, could not be overturned. And so Gwyndolin, Lord of the Darkmoon was worsted. And the moans of his defeat still echo within the defiled halls of fallen Anor Londo. For now, the Arch Heretic dreams. Digesting his prey, in the ruins of broken glory.
    Lo, who may deliver our Lord from his torment? Who may absolve Anor Londo of the darkness which defiles it's hallowed halls? Come quickly. For the fire fades..."
    - an excerpt from the memoir's of Company Captain Yorshka, found in a tower removed from Anor Londo. Many of the pages have stains on them, like droplets of rain, or tears...

    I can imagine Gwynevere fleeing the city in the rain after hearing the news of her father. Gwyndolin doesn't know what to do. He's shocked and saddened about his father, his sister vanished, and he is the heir to the throne. He makes an illusion of his sister, and doesn't know if she's dead or not. At this point, he's probably in a blind panic.
    He was raised as a girl by Gwyn, because it was unheard of for a boy to use darkmoon magic. Because he was always shut away from the world, he stays away from others. Gwyndolin always sought the approval of his father, but Gwyn is now dead. What can he do? He has unfinished business. So, he finishes creating the illusion that everything's just fine and dandy, sweeps everything under the rug, and runs off to guard his father's grave, as it's all he can do for him.
    Gwyndolin is pulling the strings behind the main plot in dark souls, but he's a tragedy. You can understand and sympathize with him. Gwyndolin is a really well written antagonist.

    I nerded out and wrote a story about my character going through Lothric in DS3 and he was followed by a knight by the name of Kynarthe who was a distant relative to Gwyn. This knight becomes a mentor and protector to my character, almost a father figure to him but is convinced the Age of Fire needed to continue as it was Gwyn's will. But during their adventure he begins to realize that the world has been through turmoil again and again because of Gwyn's actions. So at the end of it all, it is actually this relative of Gwyn who lets the fire fade instead of the Firekeeper because he realized the Age of Fire ended long ago, letting it restart would add more suffering. I feel like this would be the music that plays when he is looking down at the first flame and letting it die.

    I feel like Dark Souls was fully designed to make you relate. It’s strange, but Anor Londo is one of the many instances of this game that seems...strangely familiar and relatable. I guess you could refer to Anor Londo as the mind. It is created with the highest hopes and optimism. But it has no idea the hardships it will face...the terrible things that are to come. Think of the citizens that populated Anor Londo as thoughts. They are happy, content, and they feel safe and warm behind the tall walls that protect it. But the emotions are often taller than any wall, and can always easily reach the inter machinations of anyone’s mind...or anyone’s Anor Londo. The depressing, resentful, bitter, unforgiving, angry, sad and punishing emotions will be referred to as the Undead Curse that quickly sprawls its way across Lordran. The Undead Curse crawls its way to all the different nations...or in this case, the parts of your brain. The Curse jumps over the High Walls like a hurdle, and infests the citizens, or thoughts that populate your brain. The thoughts get duller, and weaker. They grow frill and shriveled...and eventually go Hollow, or depressed. These thoughts lock themselves away in there homes, staying and festering in your brain. If you are Gwyn, and you are the King of Anor Londo, and pretty much everything else, you know you have to make a change. But as the Curse comes close to fully destroying your temple...Gwyn’s children make a fine example. Gwyneviere was a state of happiness that ran away. Gwyndolin casts her as an illusion after she runs away, and reinforces the now illusion of happiness. He helps pretend that you are happy. (Spoiler ahead:) The Nameless King is an example of reality, and having to come to your senses and let go. But he is exiled and all his statues and shrines were destroyed and the very thought of him was erased...and eventually...if no change is made...it’s like how Anor Londo is in Dark Souls III. Everything dilapidates...crumbles to the ground. New foundations are built over it that eventually run down too...and the Festering Abyss has taken over the Knights and folk left alive. In Dark Souls, nearly every character is after something. They are driven to a goal. And the goal of our main character in Dark Souls is to relight the flame, and erase the previous Lord of Cinder, who is now hollow and insane. In a way, our main character is the last hope of our line. The one trying to erase everything...and start anew. It’s us. It’s us cleaning our slate, and trying again.

      And finally, we did it. We usurped the Flame and united it with the Dark in perpetual equilibrium within our Darksign. Now, the Age of Hollows has truly begun.

    The story of dark souls is something that I've always really connected to. At it's core there is the "Chosen one" Who is an empty hollow husk without any real purpose or meaning and who has been left behind in this depressing and often times lonely world, and the only thing keeping them going is this desperate hope that they are "The chosen one" That they will save this world, and all around you these people desperately try to find their place in the world as it falls apart around them. This edit really drives that feeling home. You have to ignore that your actions are ultimately desperate and meaningless and just keep going, and that you will forever remain disconnected, empty and left behind by a world that's only use for you will eventually result in a very painful death.

    things are rough in life right now and although it’s just a game, i think it’s been just the distraction i needed to keep myself from getting too wrapped up in all of the things bringing me down right now. i’ve tried countless other things but this series, and this game particularly, have guided me back to a place in life where I can feel interested in something again. to quote one of the other comments on this video , dark souls truly is a special game.

    IF DS1 had the same mechanic where you can choose whether you go into NG+ or not, having Anor Londo rain after Gwyn died would be a cool touch.

    I think Dark souls shows the absolute beauty in Miyazaki’s work. It has such an intricate story it could be a book, such emotion it should be considered art, and such tragedy it can bring you to tears. But he never wanted praise for all that, instead he locked the breathtaking landscapes and castles behind bosses that less then half the people who buy the game will ever defeat and the beautiful story broken apart and scattered across hundreds of items so that only the most dedicated of players will ever be able to piece it all together again. Miyazaki could’ve given his vision to the world, been praised by everyone, created movies, and made millions. Instead he chose to share it only with those who he believed were worthy of it. A niche community who he knew would respect and love his creation just as much as he does. I love these games, they mix beauty, darkness, love, and tragedy all together in a way that connects to me on a real life level and I can never thank Miyazaki enough for creating them.
