Why is it so difficult for people to fact check what they're thinking before disputing something? I'm not the greatest bass player myself or the biggest fan but even I know Paul has owned and played right handed guitars for a long time.......Shocker lol. Everyone has to throw in their input I guess because there must be something negative to say about everything right? `\_(ツ)_/`
Paul grew up in a time when there wasn’t a lot of thought given to left-handed guitar players. In fact you can look around today and see that it’s most certainly still a rarity to see quality left hand guitars. With that in mind Paul has no problems with playing a right handed guitar upside down and restrung for left-handed. Paul currently still owns a right handed Telecaster, Epiphone Casino and an Epiphone acoustic… and plays them upside down and restrung left-handed… and I’m sure he owns many more right hand instruments.
This is an amazing story. Denny Lainey’s participation in the story is really cool. Not a lot of people in his station in life would be so cool. Congratulations!
What an amazing story.... wow!!! I'm so glad you were reunited with your baby. That Rickenbacker had a hell of a journey. Thanks for sharing this with us. ❤😁
Wow, how frigging cool is that.. amazing story, and glad to hear you got your baby back , there is a few that got away that still sickens me when I think about it,thanks for sharing this.
This is a wonderful story and I understand it, I lost a 360 getglo back in the 80s that I got in 1978 and have dreamed very often of finding it again, but I have no idea how to even start, congratulations on the reunion
I'm glad everything worked out and you finally got your bass back along with a very cool story to go with it. Nice to have it all authenicated by Denny Laine. Congratulations brother... I better Go Now 😎👍
Loved this story! Such cool details. Thanks for sharing, and as a Rickenbacker bass player, I can say it’s such a magnificent instrument! This one was meant to find its way back to you.
Wowww, bro!! I' m a bass player, Paul is my favorite musician and Rick is my favorite bass ( I'm crazy sparing for one).... so your beautiful lovely story is one favorite for me...it makes Paul and Ricks even greater ,he wanted you to get your Rick back, and I'm really happy that after 42 years you did...lovely story to share, thank you ,you lucky guy!!!! ,
That was a great story. I always wanted a Ric, but could not afford one in my younger days. Now I finally got one from 75. But it was in a terrible condition. With some help from a friend, I managed to bring it back to life. Every instrument has a story to tell. I really enjoyed yours!
It would be cool if Denny or that drummer mentioned your quest to Paul and have some sort of interaction again to come even more full circle. Loved the story; thanks for sharing.
Pretty cool story on the history. I’m a longtime bass player and have many rare ones. I buy/sell and have dealt with a good number of name players. As they say, “it’s the thrill of the chase”...trying to locate certain instruments and work out a deal. Congrats on getting your’s back.
Loved this story Dan! I've owned my January 1974 4001R (jet) since '83. I've improved it a bit over the last few years and although I've considered what price I would sell it for, don't think I could ever part with it... and if I did, I'd end up with a story much like yours (hopefully). All the best to you, and rock on.
A needle in the haystack or probably worse odd since the serial number was unknown at the time! Perseverance and "it was meant to be" is the lesson here. Don't give up! Never give up! Thank you for this video.
My friend Billy was with me when I handed the bass off at the farm in 1974 and then it was him who walked into tge pawnshop in my hometown 42 years later to discover the lead about the bass. I had actually been in the back storage area of the pawnshop with the owner looking at a piano, and now I know the bass was in that room at that time unbeknownst to either of us. Thank you Kevin for viewing and your comments.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful story. I just heard your interview today on the "Mop Tops and the King" show, and came directly to your channel. Best regards.
Good story, it was a generous offer but Paul probably already had a few lefties already..Too bad you didn't get Macca ,Denny and Jimmy McCullough to autograph it ,then you probably wouldn't have sold it in the first place..good detective work and some good karma, you got it back..I have a '73 myself...
Great story mate that's incredible that you got her back. I wonder if your friend still has the Les Paul from the photo. If it was a 58-60 model ohhh wow......
Very cool! I have a 73 4001 that I bought when I was in high school in "77 so I know how you can fall in love with an instrument! Thanks for the great story!
Fantastic story! The same thing happened to me when My 1 of a kind Epiphone Natural maple Crestwood from 1979 got stolen out of a van in New Orleans. Heartbreaking . Searching Pawn Shops. I never found it and Googled it for recovery for 45 years.
Just love that story, I've been following you since I first found you on Facebook. Rickenbacker is my fav bass, to which I don't play, but my love who recently passed away (cancer) his mother bought him a 4001 Mapleglo back in 1977, she's a beautiful bass! 🎸🖤
This is way, way, way, too cool of a story Dan! I loved hearing it just like all the other Beatles fans on this thread did. My very first concert was Wings in St. Paul, MN on June, 4, 1976. 450 concerts later, that first one is still the best and has never been topped! Did you and your friends take a road trip to attend any of Paul's concerts during that initial May/June 1976 tour of USA?
Thanks Dan, such a great story, McCartney, Wings, the Rick, Jr's. Farm and the 42 year hunt. Amazing! I had a (1974) 4001 bass Maple Rick (Lefty) got in pawn and returned to the Pawnshop a couple years later, after realizing the bonehead move, went back to repurchase but she was gone, never to be seen again. Also in Baltimore there was a Music Shop named Stringer's Music World, Eddie Stringer was the owner. Nice place, closed long ago...wonder if they were related to the person in your story? Thanks again, Steve
What a great story. Good for you, that the Rick made it back to you. You did a nice thing by giving it to Paul, and he did a nice thing by making sure you got it back 2 weeks later. We can overlook a decision made by a 19 year old in 1974. I think you probably paid for that decision many times over in effort and stress over whether you would ever get it back again lol. Glad you did. Thanks for sharing.
lost a 68 gold top les paul. my half brother bought it brand new. I came across him one day and I asked to buy it. after over 40 years of owning it he sold the week before
Hey Dan, this is an awesome story! You should try to see if you can contact Paul's management and arrange to meet him. He will be in Knoxville on May 31st. It would be pretty cool if that would happen. You could have him sign your bass and show him the old pictures.
Dan, I don't put much stock in fate, but I do in God! You got this bass back against all odds!! What does that tell you!!? Take care brother! Jack ~'()'~
Im still waiting to find my Guild S300D that was taken in 1984 It was a rare bird as it was SN 10001 - I remember that cuz my Dad said when I bought it, "they made 10000 bad ones before that one :-) I found another one but it's not the same, so I really can appreciate your story! Curious what the guy made you buy it back for? but it wouldn't matter at that point... Too bad Paul didn't sign it :-) But it's a GREAT story.
Thank you for viewing my story, it turns out that if I had gotten Paul to sign it I would have most likely never got it back as it’s value would have been apparent to the possessors. I hope you find the Guild.
@@merseyside2011 Well I meant that if he gave it back to you, and he signed it just for fun, you prob wouldn't have sold it :-) I have a '72 P Bass that I won't sell, she's my baby! - But the Guild has the same meaning to me that your Rick had for sure. nothing fills that gap.
Amazing story, for some reason it sounds familiar, have you made other videos about this Dan? I'm a long time bass player myself and bought a new 4001, mapleglo just like yours in 1977 and gave it a couple of years later to someone I owed some money to and he in turn sold it to another local bass player who died years ago and I lost track of it and don't expect to ever see it again. But I have had many Rics (and others) since then and do own a 1979 mapleglo 4001 now which I've owned for about 20 years and a 1985 4003FL (factory fretless, I'm sure you know) also mapleglo. I bought a new jetglo 4003S this year and it really sounds good but of course they all do, haha! I like your 74 because the neck pickup is a little closer to the neck than later ones. I had a '75 fireglo 4001 with the half inch spacing and wish I'd kept that one. I think '75 was the last year of the 1/2" neck pickup spacing, they moved to inch spacing after 1975, actually somewhere during the middle of the year. I really enjoyed your story but I swear I've either read about it or seen another video about it somewhere or other. I have a Ric-O-Sound box too someplace or other, those are hard to find nowadays. Keep that bass. I paid $429.00 for my new 1977 4001 in Boston at a place called EU Wurlitzers. Oh, Paul McCartney is the reason I play bass, I heard 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand' when I was ten years old when it was new and I told my parents I wanted to play that 'humming' guitar, so I must be a couple of years older than you.
What a beautiful story. Did Paul think is was "silly" to keep this instrument because it is right handed? I was 8 in 1974, and I loved the song Band on the Run - it was part of my childhood. Thanks for this!
Actually he said he could have any bass in the world and he just didn’t want to deprive a fan of his instrument, it was Denny Laine that suggested to me that Paul would love it.
Why is it so difficult for people to fact check what they're thinking before disputing something?

@Nick Taylor Just miserably envious people. It's sad really.
I think McCartney owned a right-handed Casino, Texan, Telecaster, plus assorted others
Paul grew up in a time when there wasn’t a lot of thought given to left-handed guitar players.
