    As a Dominican (From puerto plata), I know that most of the sellers tries to sell stuff a higher price than a Dominican could buy. I know that this is a way for them to make money , but to be honest I don’t like at all the way they want to sell as if it’s an obligation for the tourist to purchase, they want to show that they are friendly but they just want your money.
    There are necklaces or t shirts that tourist are buying for more than $5 and $15 dls when they can get it at $2 or $5.
    Yesterday I was with my mom buying a coconut because I also want to sell them on the beach as I need the money, but needing the money doesn’t mean that I must abusive other’s money because the money is not on a tree that everyone can get it easily, so the reason of the story is because I was talking to an old lady (the one selling the coconuts) and she told me that there people selling coconuts at $5 dollars (for the tourist) when she only sells her coconuts for $1 , so she advised me to sell them for $10 and my reaction was sad, I want everyone to take advantage for the same lower price.
    I’m thinking about other natural drinks that I can prepare by-myself but my point is that everyone is comfortable and they can also see that not everyone wants to see them as a fool.
    A few months ago I went to the Central Park with my best friend and a German man started talking to us and asking about a closer bank where he could change his money to Dominican pesos , the thing is that we started guiding him and during that time many people were looking at us as we were about to take money of him or we are just 2 girls that are with him just for s3x, others from different restaurants were inviting us to take a look , I was extremely impressed and also angry because our intention was only to help this man. At the end we just went to the supermarket so he could buy some food and also change the money but before we could say good bye , he was asking me another thing and a Taxi man that was in the supermarket he just started talking to this man and I was like “I didn’t ask for your opinion”, these drivers wants to be empathic or funny , friendly to take the money. So, keep your eyes open and you can feel the vibration of the ones that are respectful and wants you to feel another human being , a person that wants you to feel like you want to come back because you were given the best and unforgettable experience.

    We arriver to Punta Cana and saw exchange place on the street - looked like little cottage with a sign on it. We gave the guy $100 and wanted pesos . The guy ( older man) took our $100 and said he will come back with pesos. He ran somewhere and me and my friend were waiting for him like 3 min. Then i said to my friend “ i think we just lost $100 🤬”. But 2 min later the old man showed up with the pesos in his hands. So he was REAL money exchanger 😃😃

    as a native Dominican, i can truly say that this video is 100% accurate.
    the most important tip is to always have small bill denominations, and don't be too flashy or have large amounts displayed when executing a transaction.
    i see it way too often where tourists tend to open their wallets and i get to see ALLLLLLLL their dollars and pesos in one spot. EVERY place here takes pesos, so you shouldnt feel the need to carry dollars as well....
    if you think you may run out of pesos , i would recommend maybe stashing 5o or 100 dollars, to change....but there is NO NEED to carry dollars as any alternative.

      Yes I like the chicas. In fact I had one try and get me to go to her neighborhood with her to meet her folks. She insisted that I go and I still declined her offer. She wasn’t happy with me to say the least.
      I had a dude on a motoconcho ask me about my bosillos de cremallera and why do I wear esa mierda. Stupid questions they know the answer.

    Hello everyone, to begin with, I am Dominican by birth and raised in the USA, so I am not a supporter of one country or the other, I was on vacation in the DR in March 2022 and I don't know why I had a feeling that the same thing was going to happen to me on vacation a year ago, ladies and gentlemen in punta cana there is a multimillion dollar fraud with rented cars.
    When someone reserves a car or SUV from the USA, the normal thing is that they have the reservation in the system, as I also have proof of a reservation via email, unfortunately, my premonition turned into reality, they tell you that the reservation that you made does not exist, even if you show them proof, then they offer you another car for $$$ three times more than the reservation that you made , unfortunately it was not an isolated case since it happened to me several times the most interesting thing is that the car they offer you has nothing to do with the recognized places to rent cars, for example Avis, Enterprise, Hertz ext. they just use world company rent a cars names to get you in this fraud has to come to an end, please spread the word.

    The Uber Scams: you call for a ride on uber app, they connect you to a driver. Driver immediately starts to message you in uber app (biggest red flag). They ask dumb questions like "where are you going" then eventually say they will take you for 2-3x the uber rate that was given. You say no and they hold your uber account hostage until you cancel. Hostage meaning it constantly says they are in route, when they are not. Not allowing you to get another driver/uber. If you cancel to free your search, they get whatever the cancellation fee uber does, for basically sitting home texting only two or three times. Multiple times a day. The next driver you connect with will do the same.
    I really believe some of them dont even have a car to come get you. Just nickle and dime scam all day from home/nearby. Its been many times it took well over an hour for me to secure a ride somewhere. If i ever get an uber who shows up with no hassle, i tip them well

There was an issue recently where a lady asked the Uber to wait in front of her hotel while she got something in her room she forgot and the Uber ran off with her luggage and reported not seeing anything in the car.

    All great advice! I've been ripped off by cab drivers on three continents, and now always get a ride from the place I'm staying. They also charge you a high rate, but it could be worse, and you know in advance! Another one I encountered in Chile was the gypsy pair, one (usually a good looking woman) offers to read your palm, and if you look around, you'll see two guys vectoring in on you, so you can guess your fortune right then. Also, if someone asks you what time it is, they want you to take out your phone. Don't do it. The first part of a lot of scams is, they'll ask you (in perfect English) if you're American. Take my advice, and say "Nyet, Rus!" and glare at them. Hilarity ensues.

    Great information and very true! Perhaps, we need to add the Uber scam, where the scam is perpetrated by the driver.
    After the passenger is picked up, the driver offers the passenger a discount to the Uber rate if the passenger pays in cash but the passenger needs to cancel Uber. This will result on the passenger being stuck with Uber fees and the out of pocket money paid to the driver. This happened to me a few years ago.

    If you are staying in a resort and on a beach, watch out for vendors that have parrots. My wife and I thought the guy was being nice he had us pose with the bird while he took photos with our phones . Once we were done he took about 20 photos or so and said he wanted 5 dollars for each photo. I laughed and said I would just delete them. He became irritated. I told him I would give him 5 dollars instead, he accepted and was on his way.

      oh wow... i was just on a 'private island beach' ..part of a tourist package.. from one of the cap cana resorts) and met an honest one of these guys with parrots, i guess.. one approached me and my girl, we asked how much up front, he said $5 .. we agreed, he took a few pics with my girl's phone, then asked "other movie?' .. (meaning other phone?) because the screen was too dark to see and the sun was too bright (on her android).. so i handed him my handheld Sony camera (a small one, like a powershot) and he took a few more shots of us with the bird.. then gave my camera back, took 5 bucks and went on his merry way. After reading this comment above, I got some shivers.. but we were ok in this case.. didn't even think 'scam' until now.. i'm glad we were ok.. now i'm thinking of all that could have gone wrong... including running off with either of our our devices.. i guess it was possible.. phew..

    Been to DR from Canada 3x. My experience is you will encounter aggressive people at the airport insistent on taking your bags for you for a fee - just be stern and even rude and decline the offer - they will eventually move on.
    I always make sure to book a package that includes transportation from the airport to the hotel (and back).
    At the resort you may encounter people trying to sell you stuff (usually on the beach) -- if not interested just ignore them and if that doesn't work just be persistent that you are not interested. Don't make the mistake I made one time of making up a name and saying I will think about it as every day they saw me, called out that name and said want to buy. It was more annoying than anything.
    As others have said - don't bring anything with you that you are not willing to part with - and also don't be flashy with your money or expensive items (cameras, jewellery, etc). Stay as low key and invisible as possible.

    • @TravelDroner
      @TravelDroner  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for sharing your experiences from your trips to the DR! The airport hustle with the luggage handlers is a common scene, and you're right; sometimes, you must be a bit firm to keep things in your own hands. Booking transportation ahead of time is smart; it takes a load off your mind upon arrival.
      Oh, and the beach vendors! Your story about inventing a name is both funny and relatable. It's amazing how something so small can become a daily 'hello' from persistent sellers. It's a good reminder to keep things simple and say no if you're uninterested.
      Your advice about keeping valuables to a minimum and not flashing around expensive items is spot-on. It's all about blending in and not drawing unnecessary attention to yourself. Really appreciate you taking the time to share these tips. These real-world insights can make all the difference for someone planning their visit. Safe travels on your next adventure!

    I have been living in the DR for close to 3 years now. Amazing people , good hearts and a beautiful island HOWEVER it IS 100% true .....because if your are not constantly alert at ALL times you will get scammed in some way , shape or form. Also be advised no matter where you go or what you do in DR ......there are always 2 different prices .....a dominican price and a gringo price. They won't advertise that but its true so do not believe prices you see advertised on items

    • @AzuloRojo
      @AzuloRojo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s right on the Dominican price and Tourist Prices. That’s one of the things I hate the most, (I’m Dominican), but chico , I truly hate when the sellers wants to triplicate the price for something that it can be cheap.
      For the rent is happening too in Puerto Plata , they think that as this is a tourist place , they just want to sell or rent an apartment extremely expensive (not just for these people that comes from another country and “can pay for it”, but it’s not good not for us Dominicans nor good for the gringos as many Latinos says.

During the picture taking a guy with a little monkey came up and put the monkey on my son for a picture, then demanded $40 each for parrot man and himself or he would call the police. My son laughed and said “ you do that! I’ll wait here”. The guy walked off on a huff . We face him the stink eye every time we saw him with his little monkey. He was very aggressive so be careful!

    I'm shocked anyone would fall for any of this. It's all common sense. It's a 3rd world country and you are more than likely an American or European tourist, places perceived to be wealth. That means you're a target, flashing a bunch of USD$ 50s would get youugged in a US city, what on earth makes you think you're safe to do so in a country where the average doctor makes less than a part time McDonald's employee in the US. The resort we always stay at has a gigantic wall around it with armed guards at the gate. They don't let locals in. It's sad because locals don't have access to their own beautiful beaches, but it's a protection for the tourists, which is the countries lifeblood. Stay in your resort and use pre scheduled travel through your resort to and from the airport. Most importantly like this video said, learn the value of NO.

  • @nesq4104

      @nesq4104 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@princessalee2554 exchange when you leave the airport and in the local area. It will be closer to actual value. The airport took 10 pesos per dollar. So is e change was 1 to 55 they gave me 44. Off 100 usd you will easily lose 20 usd. Now In the tourist area they would exchange at 53 pesos. When arriving with usd bring some small dollars like 1, 5, 10 20. So you can transact with taxi then exchange later. Keep your bills this small when you arrive as many won't deal with 50s and 100s. Especially small time sellers. That's too much peso to convert and give you from the store.

    1. First timer, stick to the resort, only take tours represented by the resort.
    2. Males of college age. STiCK to the resort, you will get rolled at a local bar and they are worthless anyway.
    3. Order drinks by brand, not rum and coke, bacardi and coke. Generic alchohol will make you sick and is unregulated.
    4. Keep cash on you in unique places. 20-30$ some in pocket, some in bag, some in a shoe. Never all together.
    5. Barter with people on the beach but don't be an ass. You don't need to pay face price but you don't need to bring them to min, they work hard, give them a little profit, it is still cheaper than you can get back home.
    6. Someone offering you something for free is never free. Don't commit to anything and only claim to spend what you think is worth it. If you get into a shop or deal to buy something, they will bring pressure and things can get very awkward quickly.
    7. Don't shop with cards on you. Low amounts of cash rule and if you find that one of a kind great deal, lock it in and come back with a card and maybe someone from the resort to make sure you don't get rolled, it works every time and you get a better deal. I was locked in a cigar hut with them serving me booze and smokes until I made a purchase, once I literally roll3d my pockets out and showed them I only had 30 in cash and no cards, they let me roll.
    7. Even with tours, ensure your bank can take the charge. Chartered a boat and my bank denied the fee. I was taken down an alley to a remote office, alone, where I was given a phone and a laptop to make my payment go through. Albeit awkward, they were not ripping me off, rather they were ensuring I was not getting a free charter and then running without paying. That happens too but was super awkward.
    8. The average DR citizen makes 200-300$ usd a month, the small amount in your pocket or your apple watch is a very clear sign that you are "rich" in some of their eyes. Just be aware and know that you might have a watch that represents many months of work and people can see that as am opportunity if you are rocking out with cheap booze and partying it up.
