Here in the UK I run a project called Freebikes4kids. In the last 5 years over 3000 bikes have been donated, repaired and then rehomed by the project. All for Free! There is a huge bike surplus and a lot of generosity in the bike community ❤
i started building bikes to help with my depression i was going through after my separation from a 23 year marriage. Was always into riding and fixing my own bikes as a kid. now i have 4 running bikes and 2 that are almost complete and a frame that i plan on making a gravel bike running 27.5s bicycles save my world that's for sure...
I Recommend going with the lowest # of speeds- most resilient to cable drag and cheapest chains. Poor people can't afford new 10sp chains as easily as a 5-6-7 sp. chain.
I have a 1x4 from salvaged parts and that is plenty of gears for my shopping bike. I could make it 3x4 and that's the same as a 1x12 and I don't think cross chaining would be an issue.
San Diego Bicycle Collective and Bikes Del Pueblo FTW! Great source for bikes, frames, components. (I've passed 5 bike on so far, donated saddles and components.)
Excellent video! I really enjoy your Channel! Your Bike Mechanic skills are very interesting to watch! I also, enjoy your Channel Music selections! Don Blake
I think say you.. is a joke but, I hear the IA talking in spanish and think ok no problem hahaha. Maybe one day here in my country selling bikes like the video. I like the steel bikes that you build in every video🚲👍😍 Thank you Oldshovel and cheers from Mexico🚲
Do something crazy on this rockhopper! Repaint with white, buy some stencils or stickers with different shapes (leaves and trees would be nice, is a mountain bike), put in the frame and paint with a second colour. Then, remove them.. I did with my bike and looks awesome!
Absolutely! Not just that though, online abuse needs to halt as well. You only have to spend 5 minutes on social media to find at least 1 video or post where the comment section turns vile towards cyclists. I know you can just scroll past but it’s time there was a way to report comments on abuse towards a community ie cyclists otherwise we’re going to have a generation who think it’s fine to treat cyclists like second class citizens!
It pains me every time I see a dead Bontrager SSR saddle. They fit my sit bones (wide butt) so well. I’m always on the hunt for good ones. Great video as always.
rock hopper needs all red iodized parts. Also Ibikeutah works with sweet streets I believe and this time of year they have volunteers work on bikes that they donate to refuge families and kids.
Nice job. So what will the bicycle collective do with that bike. Do you think they will sell it or give it to someone. How many different parts did you replace. I know you replaced the rear derailleur. What other parts did you replace?
Good man Rob! Love this channel and the work that you do. I frequent our local collective for parts and occasional stand time to keep our fleet of ~12 bikes going, working up the courage to volunteer at some point. That gen of XT derailleur is I think very underrated, works great on 7 to 9 speeds even with a wide range, positive shifts even under load, and often can be found very inexpensively. Plus it's silver, a nice counterpoint to the current trend.
LOOK DUDE NON PROFIT IS SIMPLY ANOTHER BUSINESS MODEL THAT GIVES THE FALSE PERCEPTION THAT IT MIGHT BE PHILANTHROPIC & Charitable. It is simply another business avenue that people have picked up on & market. Bikes good, bike obviously changed the world. Bike collectives are often awesome, allowing people to work on their own bikes with skilled supervision on hand to assist & buckets of parts. Most companies flood the market and use salespeak to justify their products. I don’t consider visible welds craftsmanship. I have seen entry level Orbea with vomit welds for $1000. They target newbies & the majority with disposable income who just want a bike & don’t know any better. That’s lbs.
Estuve en Dallas tx, en septiembre y entre a una tienda de segunda mano y encontré una bicicleta trek lindísima pero ya la habían comprado😢😢😢 y había otras pero no me gustaron. Saludos amigo

Have you ever used eucalyptus oil to get the tape residue off ,works a a treat

Yep. 6,7,8 all use the same chain.

Cheers from China, now i am running the same Deore SL-510 with XT 772 for like 10 years.
SLC Bike Collective is the best! I love supporting them
San Diego Bicycle Collective and Bikes Del Pueblo FTW! Great source for bikes, frames, components.

I've fixed up 2 CL bikes and donated them to the local bike collective. I enjoy it.
Love the channel and the work you do.
Hello brother! I find these bikes with this geometry fascinating, especially the chromoly ones.
Congratulations on the content.
What no dork disc the bikefarmer would be turning over in his grave if he was dead 🤣🤣🤣
That FX series are some really good bikes. They won't win races or work as a mountain bike. But as an all around transportation they are hard to beat.
You are a good Man Mr Old shovel! Congratulations !
Gracias por la traducción, encantan sus restauraciones de bicicletas 😊
A very decent bike! Was relieved when the duct tape on the stem turned out not to be a structural repair.
Nice clean build.
Your parts bin is massive!
I have a few extra parts…😁🙌
Good video for a good cause!
I really like your perspective on bikes🎉
A Blue Lug inspired Rockhopper build with crazy alt-bars and lots of colors might be really cool!
Great attitude, Respect!

Red cables on the rock hopper sport .. give old things new life !!
I’ve got a Trek 7.3. Before I retired I rode it to work and on weekends. Now I walk to keep the weight off.
Exelente en español GRACIAS 👍🇲🇽
Yes thank you to the TH-cam auto-dubbing

We love your channel!
These are my favorite type of finds. Looks like trash to a passerby what is actually treasure with a little TLC
The Bike Library in Iowa City is a similar wonderful place!
I have a Rockhopper from around '97-'99 that needs a new home. I know how to do the mechanics but how do you determine value?
Have you used that 90 degree impact in videos before? I usually start with my impacts.
25 bucks for a trek FX daaaaamn.
Now to make more streets bike friendly, instead of keeping our cities car dependent

I noticed that he changed the crankset from a steel one to a Shimono aluminum one, not sure of the model, but a definite upgrade.
I say, repaint the Rock Hopper Sport, maybe, a Blue color. Just a thought!

Would love to see you paint the Rock hopper. You haven't done that in a video in a long time.

Really cool bike!
Que hermosa bicicleta saludos desde tierra blanca ver México
Nice job, nice people
Eres fantástico amigo, saludos
👍
Do you notice individuals hanging out at the co-op waiting for you to show up with a bike?
Uso uma Trek Al 800 desde 1994
Heute mal auf Deutsch 👍✌
Their prices are offensive. 😮
❤
mentioning how great of a deal, is a thing which gets too much focus, like it justifies the act.
does this world look like care?
👍👍👍👍

And yet here in my city they scrap old bikes for new shiny ones … or the homeless steal them
