  • Join me at the old A57 Todwick Crossroads, one of South Yorkshire’s most deadly roads which was completely realigned in 2014, leaving behind large sections of the old road that are now a mixture of abandoned and access only.

Sends a shiver down seeing six killed on the A61 near Wakefield 24 years later on Sunday. Change attitude don't blame the road.

This kind of thing is documentary gold. Imagine if we'd had something like Google Streetview decades ago to record the lay of the land and the ability to switch views through the years. I am curious what will happen to that disused section. It looks like it's just a footpath and local curiosity now but I wonder if given more time it will be dug up and the land sold off or repurposed. I live in New England now, in Maine USA, and even in the 25 years I have lived here, I've seen highways changed and new roads built, empty areas become commercial or residential zones. After a while it just fades from memory and people only see places as they are now. Those of us who enjoy local history and get nostalgic for how it was appreciate folks like you documenting changes, because nobody else will. 'Official' sources might archive the maps and plans but in another 10 years people living around (Rotherham you said?) won't realize it wasn't ever like this. Look forward to the next one now. Cheers, mate. Stay well.

I used to travel on this road a lot, as a child, and always remember it being a very busy road. I also saw the various improvements over the years. I remember being stuck in queuing traffic at the Red Lion junction, before the alterations which created the turning lanes and the traffic lights were installed. Also, the right hand turn into Goosecarr Lane, before the turning lane was introduced, used to hold traffic up.
Glad to see the road changed but so sad that it took the loss of life to achieve it. A memorial would have been nice.
On a personal note, I’m pleased that I’ve found you again - I’m still subscribed to History 0114.

Can I just say that your diagram at about 18.07 and google maps give the impression of nice gentle sweeping curves for the old road when it always seemed there was a sharp left hand 90 degree bend and a sharp right hand 90 degree bend. On that section, heading to J31, at the sharp righthander there was a small brick built building, may have been a stable (?), which was regularly hit and needing repair. As I said, great video and thanks for posting

It was always a scary crossing even going straight over as impatient drivers would jump the lights. Over the years they tried different combinations of lights and filters but none stopped the idiots. I was ultra cautious when driving at night there as drivers would shoot out from the Dinnington direction at any time.
The new road is a great money earner! It's dual carriageway, wide footpaths (but few if any pedestrians) centre barrier but is limited to 50 MPH (could easily be 60 or 70 as other dual carriageway parts of the A57, around Worksop for example are.) However the hilltop on the the northern side is a spot where the camera van parks catching many.

From day one of this new piece of road, I've wondered why the pavements are so wide and why are there light controlled pedestrian crossings? The pavements go basically from nowhere to nowhere! Is there perhaps a school going to built there or some other pedestrian intensive complex.

@@petermiller8098 I agree, I think it's possibly partly to restore some of it back to natural hedgerow and 'wilderness' while making it obvious they only intend pedestrians to use it. If they had left a full width road it might encourage the hoons to drag race or ride motorbikes up and down it. Plus it puts a boundary between the new road and the 'countryside' (I am speculating I don't know the area beyond what's shown)
