“Uthaan” is played in the Benaras gharana, at the start of solos, instead of a Peshkar. It is a very well defined piece with a clear structure. But mukhda is itself an incomplete thing. It must be played within a theka. Unfortunately, many times we hear small fillers and pieces used to begin something like a keherwa taal, also referred to as uthaan. That would be incorrect.

Mukhda and Mohra are considered analogous in most cases. They are both short phrases played to reach "sam". But some maestros in the past have opined that they are different and the only thing that seems to differentiate them is the length of the phrase - mohras are shorter than mukddas. Their utility is same ... play a small phrase on the last few matras of the theka, to reach SAM. In my humble opinion, this is one of the "grey areas" where opinion seems to be divided. Having said that, the general consensus is that they are both same.
