I thought of something today that might make an interesting video, and my first thought was that it's the kind of thing I can see Nate trying. But then… he gives the impression he can do anything. (Someone linked me to a "primitive technology" ripoff where they pretend to make concrete by baking a bucket of dirt. I want to see somebody find out how much effort it actually takes to make usable concrete from scratch, making all the tools first and digging up all the ingredients. Nate would be my first choice because you know he'd show how many attempts it took to get the mix right)
Just completed my Squirtle turtle shell using this tutorial! This was my first attempt at using foam for a cosplay and this was so easy to follow! I usually get easily discouraged with projects like these, but I had to trust the process and I'm so proud of how it turned out! Thank you!
Dude, as a fellow foam-crafting enthusiast, I really appreciate the candid personal experiences and what you've learned about parts of the process. I know that contact cement pain all too well. I tend to spread the sides of the dart cut perpendicular to the face of the foam sheet to help get all the way into particularly narrow angles. A hair dryer works wonders for my impatience with contact cement. Turns that 15-minute wait into like 3 minutes.
I really love this channel. You can really tell Nate has the energy and creativity and fun typical for newer smaller channels, but the quality and hosting skills of someone who has been an industry professional for years.
I tend to like the longer format of videos. Keeps me from clicking around. I love the shells, and the idea for TMNT. I plan to dig into foam building later, but am on a polymer clay phase at the moment.
My ADHD usually gets the best of me on longer videos, so I end up with 18 tabs open of random videos, but this was very interesting, so I was surprised when it ended, even after seeing that it was 25 min, felt like 5, even thou I clicked off once.
Using a condiment bottle to use with the contact cement is an amazing idea! I've only used contact cement a few times and the brush thing always made it a very unpleasant process.
Thank you thank you Nate from the Internet! Exactly what my son needed for his TMNT costume. Easy to follow directions, very clear and resulting costume turned out fabulous. Thanks for helping make my son's first cosplay adventure at Comicon fantastic.
My dad and I made my TMNT shell out of cardboard from the dumpster behind the Big Bear grocery. He tossed me over the side and I picked the best pieces 😂.
if i had known how do do this when i was in my 20's i would have done cos play. then again there was not you tube back then. thanks for showing this off. i think i may try some of these
much better then the one i made when i was a kid. i used a cardboard box. was not too good at shaping so more boxy than shell shaped. I made a Bo staff out of a old broom handle and some grip tape, and nunchucks out of some string and another handle. i could not decide if i wanted to be Donatello or Michelangelo for Halloween that year
Nate, you should revisit the making knifes out of (blank). You've done wood, done a random piece of re bar, and even obsidian. try ideas like, making one out of concrete, cardboard, glass. ETC
Donny or Leo would be pretty easy to secure because the straps you would want to incorporate to hold the bow or swords would make for a good harness (I'm thinking original toys.) The other two would be trickier, you'd need hidden straps or some velcro maybe to hold to the top of the shell securely while the belt is the only real strapping. This is fun though, Nate. Definitely make more. If you're doing a full costume I would be interested in seeing how you handle the rest.
Looks Great , would make a cool shield aswell once your done with the TMNT cosplay. Just Velcro or contact cement on a handle of some sort and grab a sword
Hey Nate, that was awesome! I've been trying to find a shell for my costume! I will give it a try unless I can pay you to make me one! Again great job and thanks for sharing!
I worked in a tire center for years, we used volcanizing cement to adhear patches and plugs. They make small bristle brushes for laying down thin even coats that may work well for the more narrow spots.
I need to learn how to make a turtle shell and this was the first video I clicked on. Super impressive! I’m literally starting from scratch and feel like I can get there from just your video. Thanks for the excellent demonstration and sharing your skills! Subscribed!
I’d love to see you do some diy building for the yard/outdoor patio type stuff. I love the variety of your channel. Definitely more cosplay stuff. I just want to watch you make stuff, any stuffs 😆
When you said EVA foam my mind went to Punished Props and Bill and Brit Doran. Then you said the word foam smithing and it reinforced it. His foam armor that he did for Dragon Con 2019 was awesome. I got to see it in person at the meetup.
You could run straps through the foam and cover the other side with the lumps on the back so it would be covered. As you said.. there are a lot of ways to attach the shells. Or.. there are a lot of ways to make turtle shell... but THIS is how Nate does it. lol.
Fair play Nate this is an awesome guide and project! Might try it with the kids. Really like this build videos it reminds me allot of Adam Savages 1 day builds. Oh and your editing skills have improved so much! (unless you got an editor?)

Mebbe measure from coccyx to base of neck plus across the ribcage for whoever the piece is for so you know what size you're working toward? Also, mebbe velcro strips to mount the shell decoration pieces. This would allow a 'quick change' by having differently coloured (yes, I'm an Aussie) panels, perhaps a metallic or pearlescent finish for a more 'natural' shell appearance. Also if a panel gets damaged it can be swapped out with trying to rip off the contact cement.
Ty for the idea. Must have been hard to keep it together considering you were making it for a grown A$$ man. I was looking for ideas to make a costume for the kids, grate work though, looks like you are all fit to set the Foot Clan running.
for the border, EVA foam noodles/pipe insulation would be a good choice also - less worrying about forming - just slit them open and clamp around the edge - then you just need to sculpt a little with a dremel
Came here to say this! I think the pipe insulation comes in a variety of thicknesses, so it shouldn't be too hard to find something in the ballpark of what we need for the piece. May be more expensive than floor mats, but if it give you more time to finesse the final touches it's well worth it.
My favorite and go to wave vomiting foam is using wood gorilla glue. Works like a charm then you could just shave off the access! Edit: my favorite way to join foam. Not whatever talk to text thought I said
That was pretty cool. Channel is getting a little more personality lately which I really like to see. Now I know how to build out things with foam. Cool :P
Thank you!! I'll be trying to replicate this but using cardboard from some boxes I have laying around the house, as I need a costume made from recycled materials. Wish me luck 😂
This should be re made into a survival backpack so yeh please do that so we can all have one. Ps great vid IV only ever seen you from taking over kor vids
Ooo ooo. Nate. Since you’re making turtle shells and likely making an front to the shell (like a ninja turtle) can you show how you would make that kinda chest piece?
I've caught up with your videos recently and I'm loving what you have done on your channel. Your chemistry with Calli and your friends is amazing and I love the jokes and humor that create an awesome working environment. I also really enjoy your unique experiments. It really shows that you love what you do and that's awesome. A little while ago I made the decision to unsubscribe from TKOR and 2KOR because their videos just don't feel that special or entertaining anymore to watch. It made me sad since TKOR was one of my favorite channels of all time due to you and Calli with your fun experiments and amazing chemistry together. You and Calli brought that channel to life for me and ever since you guys got fired from it the videos just don't look or feel as special as you and Calli made them to be even though they could be similar videos that you and Calli have done in the past. I believe that TKOR made a mistake with letting you and Calli go and they'll probably regret not having you 2 amazing people on their channel anymore. It doesn't feel entertaining to watch their videos anymore because it seems to now be more focused on money then entertainment. Regardless, I am so happy that you are still making videos and bringing Calli along every now and then plus still keeping that amazing chemistry you guys had on TKOR that we all love. You are such good people and I'm positive you guys will have amazing success. Keep up the amazing work you've always done and never give up!
if you do make a follow-up video to this, and continue with the TMNT theme, i'd be interested to see how you make Leonardo's _katana_ s, and how you incorporate their holsters into this shell
I'd like to add one word to this lesson: SCUTE. This is what hard scale-like segments of a shell are called, be they turtle, tortoise, armadillo, crocodile skin or bird feet.
Nate and others who do this Craft could answer, Wouldn't it be a better bond to keep the factory edge [puzzle edge] when gluing to two pieces together? Although you make need to sand a bit to ruff it up! My thoughts are the puzzle edge holds a bit by itself and then there would be more surface area to adhere to.
The contact cement adheres on contact, so getting all the puzzle edges to line up without sticking at weird angles can be tricky. A straight edge is much simpler to keep from touching. I've seen other channels use paper to keep the contact cement from sticking too early on long straight edges.
Hey Nate! Wonderful tutorial! We are considering it for our next Carnival costume. One question: how thick the foam mat should be? Thank you very much!
Check out this similar foam turtle build that has some patterns you can use to make your own! th-cam.com/video/pSq5QcSXMqk/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the shoutout!
what were your measurements for the forming of the shell?? i've been looking all over the internet for a guide on that :/
@@helencuevas1181 What measurements?
I am really enjoying the variety. I like knife/sword making, but adding other creative things is always great.
Projects like this just prove that you were the real King of Random after Grant passed.
