Default is great for beginners, I started with default as an only DE player but after 500 hours of gaming it was difficult to keep muscle memory of all the different hotkeys u have to use for different civs.. for France barracks is on F but for Dutch Barracks is on G and so on and so forth, this becomes quite prominent when trying to play asian civs where the barracks are on the 3rd row of the keyboard and it messes with your brain. So I really recommend starting with default then after becoming experienced customizing legacy hotkeys in a way you learned the default ones. As for the attack move I recommend putting it into space, space does not conflict with any default hotkeys so its quite useful and easy to click.
Thank you so much, so so so much, I can't stress enough, thank you... Yeah build order I can find anywhere, but this kind of video should come inside the game as something we can watch and adjust... You alone kept me playing the game, so thank you so much
My hotkeys for grouping units are a bit different: 1: Explorer and special units (like infantry natives, mercenaries, extra infantry units, granadiers, etc) 2. Cavalry units only 3. Heavy infantry, also ranged cavalry sometimes 4. Ranged light infantry (skirmishers, archers, etc) 5. Artillery cannons (falconet, etc) 6. Mortars or Native Buildings (if its a map with natives) 7. Artillery building 8. Stables 9. Barracks For me, pressing 9 its easier than pressing 7, because 9 is at the edge of the numbers (well, almost, the 0 still exists). Thats why I use the barracks with 9. When its a naval map, I use 7 on small ships, 8 on large ships, and 9 on mortar ships
Do you know how to change the mouse to drag cursor to move around the map as oppose to moving the whole mouse across to move? Any help would be really appreciated. Cheers, Rod from New Zealand.
Ngl I think legacy is much better. You can hotkey basically everything. And it keeps command groups free. For example town center is T and vills are V. So you can just hit T and v and you'll queue a vill. Just my opinion of course but if you get used to using your keyboard more you'll be more effecient than just control groups
Widgie, I played this game since 2005 release. Around your elo. I do legacy but i already use all buttons for something. You have advice for legacy players. I use 25 hotkeys i think
I am absolutley disappointed, extremely sad, and feel very empty. A very good video, full of useful info, good tips, but no intro with "hi guys this is your higgy widgie pidgie boy (or whatever u say)" at the beginning of the video. Took a whole lot of guts to keep on whatching the whole thing.
TBH i think that HK and the "micro" in general f** the idea of strategy in the game. Imho this practice simply reduces much of the game to a question of agility at the expense of strategies and tactics. Just a rant, not a harsh criticism.
i ve allways played aoe , i start playing aoe 3 like on 2005. When i was kid never use hotkeys. Then i started to play AOE2 like competitive way, and i find AOE 2 key sistemn its waaaay easier and intuitive than AOE3 i hate now this game cos its not intuitive kinda weird
default/grid hotkeys are absolute nonsense. hotkeys position need to be logical, always the same across civs and and positioned on the amount of usage. grid hotkeys utterly fail at all 3 things. this is enforced by the attack move conflict, tho attack move should be space bar anyway
Thank for helping me being the coolest kid :D
you're very welcome!

That's some good advice! The spacebar is quite a good idea however what do you use for idle villagers?
@@Widgie I use the hotkey from the left of 1 above the TAB, I dont know how it is called but it is like a dot a bit.
@@AllSportsAthletics tilde ~ :D
What abt patrol then ? You cant shift control space

Thats exactly what I needed. Was fighting with the legacy hotkeys settings and could not make it work :D Thank you again.
Mate I love ya, few vids ago you said you'd do it and now here we are, just thx!
No problem 👍
Thank you, very useful guide
No probs! Hopefully it helps!
Thanks for this guide, helped me a lot!
Thanks for the guide!! Nice video
No problem! Happy to help!
THANKY YOU! this is perfect!
You’re welcome ☺️
Cool video! One question, how do you highlight your idle villager symbol on the top left?
All hail our next Aussie!
You’re too kind!
Do you know how to change the mouse to drag cursor to move around the map as oppose to moving the whole mouse across to move? Any help would be really appreciated. Cheers, Rod from New Zealand.
It’s in the game options at the top, just tick enable drag or something like that?
@Widgie thank you will try it shortly ! Appreciate the reply and help.
Where can i find the scout hotkey in settings ?
Nice
Thanks man!
I'm sorry to ask this stupid question but how to do you enable the top left pannels ?
I cannot have that green circle around town center when i click on it, how can i activate it ? Thanks
After assigning a number to a group of military units, how do I delete that number and assign new number or nothing at all?
If right click is attack move how do you normal move? Left click deselects a unit.
can we do camera locations hotkeys as well ? like in starcraft2 ?
I don’t believe so
@@Widgie Okay, thanks a lot for replying !!

You can hotkey anything in the DE version as well
I have the game up to 2007 TAD expansion is there anything different I need to know or functions the same?

I could learn grid but then I only have 9 control groups for my military groups and my buildings
How do I get the shortcuts overlay?
May i ask how to show button key ?
It’s in the UI options :)

Haha! Don’t worry I still do that in some of my videos! I thought that everyone understood what I was saying haha

how do you make cannons go from limber mode and back to attack mode again with hotkeyS?
If you have the grid based layout (default) you can enable the hot key description option which will show you what button to press
@@Widgie ill try to find it
i want that hotkey config please

No it's the same hotkey setup that I use now :)
@@Widgie I mean the default ones

No problem dude! Thanks for your support over the last 11 months! Nearly one year!
Why are you talking too much man
Legacy is better my boy dafuq
Not for new or returning players, just doesn’t make much logical sense
