This machine just saved my brothers life. My brothers organs were shutting down from the delta virus. There was no chance he could recover the doctors said. He went through two cprs, His kidneys were failing, heart was failing and Lungs. A miracle happened and my brothers lungs started to heal. Thank you ecmo for saving my brother. I owe you my life and my brothers life.

Thank you for this break down. I am a neuro ICU RN and because of COVID my facility is experiencing a high volume of VV ECMO pts and we don't have enough open heart RN'S to care for all the devices. So I have been asked to take a class for VV ECMO. This video was a helpful introduction to the concept of ECMO before I actually take the class. It has decreased my anxiety. Ask why hospitals are using the death protocol? Boot family out, give remdesivir, blast oxygen, bipap, precedex, vent, dnr. All other meds refused because they can be harmful? Even the WHO is against redesivir, why is it on the protocol?
My sister spent a few weeks on ECMO and survived. She was an adult that had lung damage from a fire. She entered the hospital June 17th, 2017, placed on ECMO on June 21st, 2017, and removed from ECMO on July 5th 2017.

ECMO survivor checking in 🙋 I was hit with an acute asthma attack at the end of October and was admitted to my local hospital. While they could get my O2 levels up, my lungs weren't expelling CO2 and I was in really bad shape. I was put into a coma and the ECMO team at Wythenshaw in Manchester were called and got me on their machine before they transferred me to their facility thirty miles away. The medical and nursing staff at all stages have been incredible, and this fabulous technology has given me a second chance at life 🙏

One year ago today, my husband (age 63)was on ECMO for severe Cardiogenic shock-post MI, He had right vent. failure - which led to some Left vent. failure - had a right pump which failed - then a left pump failure - with stent placement X 3 with no improvement. Cardiac arrest X 3 - Surgery 4 times within 24 hour time frame - was placed on ECMO in Huntington, WV - transported via helicopter to Ruby Memorial WVU Hospital in Morgantown, WV. Excellent group of ECMO technicians and medical staff - placed on VA ECMO - then to RVAD - and the rest is golden. Spent 1 month in hospital, then to in patient rehab, and finally cardiac rehab. No previous cardiac problems and is still alive and doing very, very well. Keep on teaching the wonders of this life-saving technology. It has taken me this long to really research what he survived. My daughter was placed on VV ECMO using a dual cannula when she was 24 hours old due to pulmonary hypertension from Maconium aspiration. Her lungs recovered and she was off the machine in 5 days. She is doing well and expected to be discharged from hospital in a week. You have beautifully explained the procedure. It makes a big difference for parents like us. Thank you !
I was on ECMO for a week after going into cardiogenic shock after years of heart failure. Afterward I had an impella and then the lvad. Hospitalized for two months and inpatient rehab for 2 1/2 weeks. I still have some nerve damage and neuropathy but otherwise doing well and working towards a heart transplant after 2 years of therapies. Very good description!

That’s wonderful. I had the same. I was fit and healthy and a virus ruined my heart. I was on ecmo for a week in ICU until I GOT AN LVad. I spent a month in ICU and then went to a ward and waited three and a half months until I was fantastically lucky to get a transplant. I’m so grateful to all the doctors nurses and staff for saving my life. I’m now three years post transplant and baring complications, I am getting by fine.. I’m so glad you are doing good too. a week and then

Since the ecmo machine uses blood thinners, Thank God she was able to get the rest and recover Enough to hold her own. Hi Eddie! The weirdest thing happened - I watched your ECMO videos this afternoon, and several hours later, I happened to care for a patient who fit the v-v ECMO indications to a T! She's on her way to the ECMO center as we speak! Thanks for giving me the knowledge to be confident in my assessment that "she needs ECMO".
Thats so cool! Well, not that she needed ECMO, but hopefully it'll help her, but more so that you recognized the potential need. One of the best things we can do for our patients is to advocate for them!
In really enjoyed seeing how ECMO has progressed over the past 30 years. I was a cardio-pulmonary tech @ WHMC from 1973-1990. Drs. Robert DeLemos and Don Null were some of the early neonatal pioneers in using ECMO. The typical patient was a premature newborn, usually weighing less than 2000 grams and delivered because they were in fetal distress. When that happened, the baby would release it's meconium plug (essentially inutero stool.) It often had the consistency of tar. The baby would inhale this while still in mom's tummy and require ECMO. Wilford Hall's ECMO device looked somewhat like a Rube Goldberg device, but it worked fantastically well. When I retired in 1990, WHMC had the only ECMO that a neonatal patient could be placed on and flown across the country. The reason- at that time the standard aero-vac plane was some version of a Lear Jet. Not a lot of room inside for all the personnel needed. Thankfully, Uncle Sam had a large fleet of C9 air evac aircraft that could carry ECMO device, patient, 3 RN's and 2 technicians and a respiratory therapist.
How cool! Wow, thank you for sharing. Its always amazing to see how things progress over time and to hear about how things were before. Now-a-days, it has become such a small "manageable" device. Moving around with it is so much easier than even the setup we used just before the new Cardihelp pump, which is quite small and very portable. Add to that the increased availability and usage across many populations and it has become such an incredible tool to save so many people. I'm always in awe of the technology and it will be interesting to see how it advances in the future!
I love it!!! I'm a CVOR Surgical Tech and this has truly helped me understand ECMO even more and to helps me to explain more about it to orientees when they come through!!!

Loved the video. I was placed on ecmo. I was awake when the canulas where placed. I seriously didn’t think I was going to make it. Then when I was woken after I’d never felt so thankful to be alive. This machine and the drs who use it are definitely miracles to people fighting for there lives

I went into cardiac arrest 3 times last year and was put on ECMO twice. It fried a nerve in my left quad and 4 of my toes are in the process of self-amputating because of it, but it saved my life.
This is a very elaborate video. I am a doctor and a post graduate student of Thoracic surgery. This is the best demonstration so far on Ecmo which I have seen.

Really excellent presentation and a very understandable breakdown of the ECMO components and processes. I was curious about how ECMO worked and when it was indicated since the use of ECMO appears to be so critical in the tx. of advanced CV. I'm not a doctor, but I teach future RN's and Doctors at a High School pre-med program and the students like to throw random questions my way concerning current med issues and tx. so I just want to be prepared! I have been aware of ECMO for decades. It is an amazing technology but technically difficult, expensive and not widely available ( in the sense that not every hospital has it, or has multiple machines, or techs that can run the machine). Glad we have it, but better to avoid Covid infection. Retired RN

I'm an xray tech at a hospital in Florida. We have been using ecmo for our covid patients. We have had patients flown in from all over central Florida to go on ecmo. We do fluoroscopy on these patients with c arm to help place the cannulas and chest and abdominal xrays afterwards to ensure the placement is correct and to monitor the lungs. I found this video extremely informative and very important, and plan on sharing it so we will have a more detailed idea of what we are seeing in the ICU and O.R on a daily basis.

Two close people that I knew had Covid, both of then were on ECMO, unfortunately both of them died few days later. I don’t have good memories with that machine but I’m glad to hear that it saved others lives ❤️

I have worked in my PICU as CA since I was 18 as a way to put me through school and get experience for med school. I’m in my gap year and am using this time to study what I see in my unit. We almost always have at least one child on ECMO, almost always VA ECMO. I would say that we don’t follow probably half of the contraindications you listed. I very regularly have kids on CRRT and ECMO. I very regularly have kids that have been intubated their whole life come back from the OR on ECMO. I once had a teenager intubated for a week, transitioned to an oscillator for a few days, and eventually go on VV ECMO. I understand that an oscillator is going to lower some of that pressure, but wouldn’t ECMO still technically be contraindicated? My understanding has always been that peds ECMO is incredibly different because of things like changed hemodynamics and sometimes anatomy. I’m curious about why these things don’t seem to matter the same?
This was the most informative yet. I'm currently taking anatomy & physiology for nursing school. We are on chapter 22 about the lungs. This video really helped put everything together as far as the importance of knowing about the heart and the lungs anatomy and physiology components . Just hearing you talk about the valves etc gave me confidence to one day explain the flow of the heart to a patient and why they may need ECMO when I become a nurse. Thank you. 😌

@@viewingeye3233 she was on Ecmo for 7days, We had to take her off, Because she was haemorrhaging from her brain. Since the ecmo machine uses blood thinners, Thank God she was able to get the rest and recover Enough to hold her own. I had ecmo treatment.recovered after 1 month in hospital. 2 weeks in coma ,week in icu and a week in general ward .lucky I survived .

Hi Eddie! The weirdest thing happened - I watched your ECMO videos this afternoon, and several hours later, I happened to care for a patient who fit the v-v ECMO indications to a T! She's on her way to the ECMO center as we speak!

Thats so cool! Well, not that she needed ECMO, but hopefully it'll help her, but more so that you recognized the potential need. One of the best things we can do for our patients is to advocate for them!

In really enjoyed seeing how ECMO has progressed over the past 30 years. I was a cardio-pulmonary tech @ WHMC from 1973-1990. Drs. Robert DeLemos and Don Null were some of the early neonatal pioneers in using ECMO. The typical patient was a premature newborn, usually weighing less than 2000 grams and delivered because they were in fetal distress. When that happened, the baby would release it's meconium plug (essentially inutero stool.) It often had the consistency of tar. The baby would inhale this while still in mom's tummy and require ECMO. Wilford Hall's ECMO device looked somewhat like a Rube Goldberg device, but it worked fantastically well. When I retired in 1990, WHMC had the only ECMO that a neonatal patient could be placed on and flown across the country. The reason- at that time the standard aero-vac plane was some version of a Lear Jet. Not a lot of room inside for all the personnel needed. Thankfully, Uncle Sam had a large fleet of C9 air evac aircraft that could carry ECMO device, patient, 3 RN's and 2 technicians and a respiratory therapist.
How cool! Wow, thank you for sharing. Its always amazing to see how things progress over time and to hear about how things were before. Now-a-days, it has become such a small "manageable" device. Moving around with it is so much easier than even the setup we used just before the new Cardihelp pump, which is quite small and very portable. Add to that the increased availability and usage across many populations and it has become such an incredible tool to save so many people. I'm always in awe of the technology and it will be interesting to see how it advances in the future!
I love it!!! I'm a CVOR Surgical Tech and this has truly helped me understand ECMO even more and to helps me to explain more about it to orientees when they come through!!!

I'm 7 months post heart and kidney transplant and ended up going on echmo during surgery.It saved my life but give me nerve damage on my left thigh.Felt like my leg was lit on fire.Grateful to be alive.

Loved the video. I was placed on ecmo. I was awake when the canulas where placed. I seriously didn’t think I was going to make it. Then when I was woken after I’d never felt so thankful to be alive. This machine and the drs who use it are definitely miracles to people fighting for there lives

Your channel is amazing! I start my flight nurse position Monday and this really helps me fill in the gaps on a lot of things. I went into cardiac arrest 3 times last year and was put on ECMO twice. It fried a nerve in my left quad and 4 of my toes are in the process of self-amputating because of it, but it saved my life.

Really excellent presentation and a very understandable breakdown of the ECMO components and processes. I was curious about how ECMO worked and when it was indicated since the use of ECMO appears to be so critical in the tx. of advanced CV. I'm not a doctor, but I teach future RN's and Doctors at a High School pre-med program and the students like to throw random questions my way concerning current med issues and tx. so I just want to be prepared! I have been aware of ECMO for decades. It is an amazing technology but technically difficult, expensive and not widely available ( in the sense that not every hospital has it, or has multiple machines, or techs that can run the machine). Glad we have it, but better to avoid Covid infection.

I'm an xray tech at a hospital in Florida. We have been using ecmo for our covid patients. We have had patients flown in from all over central Florida to go on ecmo. We do fluoroscopy on these patients with c arm to help place the cannulas and chest and abdominal xrays afterwards to ensure the placement is correct and to monitor the lungs. I found this video extremely informative and very important, and plan on sharing it so we will have a more detailed idea of what we are seeing in the ICU and O.R on a daily basis.

Two close people that I knew had Covid, both of then were on ECMO, unfortunately both of them died few days later. I don’t have good memories with that machine but I’m glad to hear that it saved others lives ❤️

I have worked in my PICU as CA since I was 18 as a way to put me through school and get experience for med school. I’m in my gap year and am using this time to study what I see in my unit.
We almost always have at least one child on ECMO, almost always VA ECMO. I would say that we don’t follow probably half of the contraindications you listed. I very regularly have kids on CRRT and ECMO. I very regularly have kids that have been intubated their whole life come back from the OR on ECMO. I once had a teenager intubated for a week, transitioned to an oscillator for a few days, and eventually go on VV ECMO. I understand that an oscillator is going to lower some of that pressure, but wouldn’t ECMO still technically be contraindicated? My understanding has always been that peds ECMO is incredibly different because of things like changed hemodynamics and sometimes anatomy. I’m curious about why these things don’t seem to matter the same?

This was the most informative yet. I'm currently taking anatomy & physiology for nursing school. We are on chapter 22 about the lungs. This video really helped put everything together as far as the importance of knowing about the heart and the lungs anatomy and physiology components . Just hearing you talk about the valves etc gave me confidence to one day explain the flow of the heart to a patient and why they may need ECMO when I become a nurse. Thank you. 😌

ECMO saved my life after birth, born with hiline membrane. I was the first person put on ECMO in Seattle Childrens Hospital.
