Not sure if you have ever seen it Christian but to phase align dialogue theres a very commonly used plugin called auto align post - there’s a version for musos too its by a company called sound radix. Takes the hassle out of phase alignment- particularly if the player / actor is moving around slightly. You just click a couple of buttons and it just fixes everything.
Yes, I believe the attempted phase alignment done here will not be effective at all as the guitar is moving. AAP is very expensive but nothing else does what it does to my knowledge.
It should totally fine, the mic's are not moving so the relationship of the sound hitting each mic will be constant even when the guitar moves. AAP is working the way you describe as the mics on set are moving. The radio mics on actors and the multiple booms are moving so there is no constant. The way Christian is doing it will work. Also a note when using AA for phase. You may not actually want perfect phase on guitar especially with a guitar cab. You can use the phase to remove unwanted frequencies where as AA will just put it 100% in phase and might actually emphasise bits you dont want@@JamesClark1991
Yep, Auto Align is a game changer. Phase correlation is so important and it does all the work for you. A bit on the costly side but well worth the expensive, time is money and this thing saves the user an absurd amount of time.
Great sound. Im nearly finished on an acoustic album and layering lots of guitars has made me turn to my ribbon, Ive found multiple tracks sit together really well without getting too harsh.
Superb. I don't play guitar but certainly know when it's right because of my experience as a session musician in the mid 1970's in Nashville, and you can use your imagination as to how many GREAT guitar players I was with in-studio....this kid has a wonderful touch and Christian keep your dogs at your side...they have a knack for sniffing out talent and bringing them to you! 🤣
Really enjoyed this, and the track you've built is simply beautiful. Could almost hear Beth Gibbons sprinkling a dose of melancholy over it, in the best of ways. Nice work.
@@TheCrowHillCo Very cool, and always great to discover new things. :) She's the singer in the band Portishead, and released her very first solo material just last week - sublime as always. She recorded a collaborative album some 20+ years ago with Rustin Man (from the band Talk Talk), entitled "Out of Season", which truly oozes vibe and humanity. One standout track - to me, anyway - is Spider Monkey, but the entire album is just gorgeous. @@TheCrowHillCo I’m using the same DPA piano mics and they work great on acoustic guitar. The mic you are using already also sounds wonderful too! Thank you for all the great work!
A very popular clip-on guitar mic, mainly for live use, resembling the Neumann KK 14, is the DPA 4099 CORE. If you'd just like to experiment with a mic of this type without spending at the Neumann or DPA level, Heimu makes an inexpensive clip-on mic for guitar. It's definitely usable, but having done a shoot-out between the Heimu, an AT 831 lav mic (which AT sold for guitar use), and the DPA, the DPA really sounds better.
Nice take with the clip-on mic. I would try getting the large diaphragms a bit further away and maybe focus more on the neck to avoid that low-mid rumble. Also worth trying a dynamic eq which can be really good at pinpointing just those frequencies you need to temper a bit.
I think there was cancellation going on before you time aligned them. The compression helped with removing some of the thudding sound. That's what I really found the most distracting before you corrected it. There is still some "muddiness" on the left channel IMO. And I'm not talking about the guitar resonance. Although it could be that needing to be drawn down a bit. The clip mic, probably because of it's placement so close to the strings, had an almost piezo tone to it.
Hi, what kind of noice isolation does the clip on mic have, can it block out say the number 94 bus? Ok, that might be too specific, but outside traffic? Room noice? Maybe a quiet vocal while playing?
Imagine a harp or piano in front of a mic, the sound of these instruments engulfs the mic forcing out any knowledge of outside interference. This is why the clip works so well, its so close to the guitar and the guitar is comparatively huge that very little else can get in.
very interesting video! As someone who records acoustic guitars every week, I've tried so many combinations. I tend to go with a tubemic (47 / 67), but it depends. sometimes a AKGC414 can be great when you just want the percussive sound if it in a mix
PZM = Pressure Zone Microphone -- for acoustic guitar, I would usually throw up a 414 *and* a PZM on separate channels, then combine to taste-- PZM was the Swiss Army knife of mic's; they sounded good/very transparent on virtually everything, even vocals (This was back in the early-mid 80s; unique sound, but not for everyone. I loved 'em)
An interesting comparison between the mic clip on the instrument body vs mounted on a stand, would be very informative imo. Something about the sound captured by the mic clipped on to the body was not appealing. A direct comparison with the dPA would be quite informative as well. Thanks so much for the video Kind regards ✌️
In my youth I thought being a musician was about playing musical instruments but for quite a while it's become more like a carpenter building a house. While something has been gained by all this technicality (the results prove that) I think something has also become lost. It's all turned into a job instead of just having fun.
