Very informative video. This is the first winter that my tropicals are up from Florida. Currently in my basement under grow lights. So far the temperature hovers around 60F and they appear to have adjusted very well (better than me)😂 Thanks, keep growing

Great video. I have a english walnut bonsai. Do deciduous trees need much light during over wintering? I was going to put it in my garage for a couple months.

My trees have been smothered under a foot of snow. Drowned in rain during hurricanes and scorched in the burning hot sun. They keep on ticking.

Great video Jerome! Still snow free here in Toronto area, but my trees have been tucked away for a while now. One more tip - when in doubt ask the members of your local bonsai clubs as they will definitely have great tips for your local environment. 🐦💙

I live in Minnesota where sometimes it can get negative 40 is it okay to have my bonsai trees in my Greenhouse or should I put them on the ground and put mulch or leaves around them and this is for my deciduous trees

Hey Darrin, Not familiar with your climate but I would say greenhouse with temps of 26-28 Fahrenheit. Can you ask your local club what they recommend?

Just wondering I bought your bonsai soil online do I add anything to it or just plant my bonsai’s in it as is?

Why shelter from the wind in the winter? I live in zone 9 and get winds.

    • @kylepurvis6231

In northern climates where ultra dry arctic air circulates the wind can desiccate small branches and destroy fine ramification on bonsai. It can also cause die back, and dry the soil out very quickly, evergreens can get wind burn too.

What about pest control? I've heard about people spraying diluted lime sulphur in this dormant period, Is that done at the beginning , or at the end of winter, or not something you do at all? I'm in southern Pennsylvania, and I find that if i put all my trees on the ground behind a wind break, and mulch with leaves, they do pretty well.

Hi Dave! Thats a great question. I don't spray any insecticide unless I see something. Especially since I am in and out of the greenhouse all the time so I don't want to breathe in the insecticide :) The lime sulfur spray is a fungicide, some people use a copper spray. It isn't something I practice either unless I see something. Thats is exactly what I do, on the floor, behind a windbreak and cover the pots. It is very easy and very effective.

My Amazon greenhouse ain’t doing its job. My wife doesn’t want me to plug any heaters on or leave an unattended heater because she thinks I’ll burn down the house. I have my tropical son the ground in the greenhouse and I hope they survive. I’m planning to cover them when it drops to freezing temps. Might just have to sell them and just stick to deciduous haha

That is definitely a scary one to leave your heater plugged in on full blast for several weeks. So I get where she is coming from:) I have been doing it for 3 years now and I check the connection from the heater to the extension chord several times a day to make sure the cable doesn't get warm. Another option would be to hire an electrician who could install an outlet in the greenhouse with a safety switch, that is my next move for sure. Good luck :)
